Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders is throwback filmmaking at its finest, so much so that Jodie Comer’s signature accent work essentially serves as one of the film’s primary special effects. The crime drama, which is a mostly fictionalized take on Danny Lyon’s seminal 1968 photojournalistic book of the same name, chronicles the rise and fall of a Chicago outlaw motorcycle club. Framed through a series of interviews with a fictionalized Danny Lyon (Mike Faist), Comer’s character, Kathy, recounts the story of how she became the protective wife of Benny (Austin Butler) and why she went to great lengths to shield him from the club leader’s (Tom Hardy’s Johnny) attempts to have Benny succeed him.
The now 82-year-old Lyon offered up the audio interviews from his mid-60s tenure with the real-life Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club, and Nichols, in turn, provided Comer with the audio of the...

Kirsten Dunst Dystopian War Film ‘Civil War’ Arriving On Prime Video ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Buckle up, war movie buffs! You’re in for a thrilling ride as Kristen Dunst’s critically acclaimed Dystopian War Film “Civil War” will soon be available to stream in the comfort of your home. Prime Video recently announced the premiere date for A24’s second-highest-grossing film ever, and it’s just around the corner.
Alex Garland’s mid-budget movie Civil War, up against some big production films like Henry Cavill’s “Argylle,” passed a coveted $100 Million global box office milestone less than a month after it dropped in theatres.
The movie, granted a reported budget of $50 million, grossed over $114 million worldwide, proving that mid-budget movies can still kick it with the big dogs. Civil War also garnered high praise from critics, with Seattle Times Moira Mcdonald saying, “Alex Garland’s “Civil War” is essentially a horror movie,...

The 23rd edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival, kicked off Friday night with a sold-out screening of Dogman, the canine-focused revenge thriller by the French veteran Luc Besson, with Dogman co-star Jojo T. Gibbs in attendance.
Some 3,500 viewers backed Unirii Square in Cluj-Napoca for the start of the 11-day festival, which runs through June 24. The biggest film extravaganza in Romania, the festival is one of the premier events on the Eastern European industry calendar, with more than 200 films, exhibitions, concerts, talks and special events scheduled, and around 1,000 industry professionals expected.
Alongside Jojo T. Gibbs, most recently seen in Alex Garland’s Civil War, the TIFF guest list this year includes Italian filmmaker Daniele Luchetti (The Yes Man), who will be honored with the festival’s special award for contribution to world cinema; and Romanian film and theater legend Catrinel Dumitrescu (Aurora), who will receive the excellence award at the closing gala on June 22nd.

As the competition series that revived the career and public image of Donald Trump, The Apprentice might be the most impactful -- and infamous -- reality show in TV history.
Seventeen years after it wrapped up its original run, the NBC series still occupies a surprisingly large place in our national consciousness.
In fact, it's the basis for an upcoming book by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh and a new movie from director Ali Abbasi.
The book will be available on June 18, and the movie will be in a theater near you on -- well, that's not quite clear.
You see, Abbasi's film -- aptly titled The Apprentice -- has yet to secure a distribution deal in the US.
With hot-button subject matter and an all-star cast that includes Sebastian Stan as Trump and Succession's Jeremy Strong as the infamous McCarthyite attorney Roy Cohn, it's the sort of film that...

“I think it’s time to make movies relevant,” said Ali Abbasi to the cheering crowd at the May 20 Cannes premiere of his Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice. “It’s time to make movies political again.”
Hollywood doesn’t seem to be listening. Despite the enthusiastic response to The Apprentice internationally — the film, starring Sebastian Stan as Trump and Succession’s Jeremy Strong as his master-of-the-dark-arts political mentor Roy Cohn, has been sold in nearly every territory — the movie is still struggling to land a U.S. distributor. That’s despite, as Abbasi calls it, this fall’s “promotional event, the U.S. election,” that would seem to provide an ideal launchpad, and plenty of free publicity, for any domestic distributor.

Fans of the 2002 film 28 Days Later and its follow-up 28 Weeks Later have been waiting seventeen years for another entry in the franchise, hoping we’d someday see a movie titled 28 Months Later. We’re not getting that one, but 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are currently working on reviving the franchise, and they’re going to make this revival worth the wait. Not only are we getting a new movie called 28 Years Later, but we’re actually getting a whole trilogy of sequels! Sony has reported that the film is set for a June 20th, 2025 release date. The film began shooting in late May around the Northeast of England. But what else do we know about this 28 Years Later sequel trilogy.

Erin Kellyman, who appeared in Solo and The Green Knight, is the latest addition the cast of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later.
Filming has already begun on 28 Years Later, a belated sequel to director Danny Boyle’s own series of horror films which began with 28 Days Later in 2002. And, as cameras roll, it’s reported that British actor Erin Kellyman has joined the cast, which already includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell.
It’s currently unknown what role Kellyman will play – but then again, there hasn’t been so much as a logline released for the film as yet. All we currently know is that the screenplay has been co-written by Boyle and Alex Garland (who wrote 28 Days Later) and that Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role as bicycle courier and viral apocalypse survivor, Jim, last seen in the 2002 original.

After heavy discussions of Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin (listen) and Lisa Brühlmann’s Blue My Mind (listen) – with a stop-over to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Ridley Scott’s Alien (listen) – we’re headed to space with Danny Boyle‘s 2007 collaboration with Alex Garland: Sunshine.
The film features an all-star international cast, including Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, Cliff Curtis and Rose Byrne as scientists/astronauts on a mission to restart a dying sun before the Earth freezes.
Sunshine features all of the usual space movie tropes, including dangerous external repair job, a mysterious Sos beacon, and a disastrous previous mission, but the film’s legacy is an unconventional third act that turns the film into a slasher courtesy of mysterious character Pinbacker (Mark Strong).
Will the crew of Icarus II survive to save the world or will they be picked off one by one?...

Warner Bros.’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and A24’s Civil War have both gotten off to a slow start at China’s box office. Furiosa, the first movie of George Miller’s Mad Max saga to be released theatrically in China, opened in sixth place with $3.7 million over the country’s Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend as a batch of local releases dominated ticket sales. Alex Garland’s Civil War, meanwhile, debuted to just $2.4 million for eighth place, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Civil War, made for about $50 million, was already an international hit with $69 million in total ticket revenue in North America and $114 million worldwide. But Miller’s Furiosa certainly could have used a bigger boost from China, as its $144 million total at the global box offices still lags behind its hefty $168 million production budget. Chinese ticketing app Maoyan forecasts Furiosa to finish its run with...

Leonardo DiCaprio has been an A-list talk of the town ever since he starred in 1996’s Romeo + Juliet. He has only grown in his craft, morphing from a romance actor to one of the greatest talents to have ever existed in Hollywood. While such attention has always been beneficial for his career, it would seem that there was one instance where he seriously backfired.

While the fallout was not experienced by him, DiCaprio did end up getting in between Hollywood’s most iconic duos. All because of his fame and status.

The movies are in trouble. Or so we’re told frequently and often in the trades, on social media, and simply among industry gossipers convinced the sky is falling. In terms of ticket sales for conventional blockbusters, this summer is indeed off to a sluggish start. But if you focus only on the nickels and dimes, you likely are missing why you fell in love with movies in the first place.
And there’s been quite a bit to love, or at least respectfully admire, in the first half of 2024. While a few genuinely great blockbusters on this list have struggled, others have thrived. Perhaps more impressive though is the handful of indie and prestige films which have found healthy Gen Z and millennial audiences and (would wonders never cease) benefited from costing less than a cool quarter-billion or thereabouts to produce. Likely in part due to so many delays...

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most talked about and controversial topics of our time as it is quickly being developed by organizations like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. People are afraid that it will take their jobs and in some cases it already has, it was also a big part of the 2023 writers and actors strike but don’t forget that AI has also been the topic of some of the greatest films ever made more recently it became the main villain in Tom Cruise‘s action-adventure film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1. So, we compiled a list of the 10 best films featuring AI that show us artificial intelligence in different lights including villainous and sympathetic roles.

Alex Garland’s Civil War is coming to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this July: more details on the release here.
A bit of a surprise this. Entertainment Film Distributors don’t put out too many films these days, and certainly hasn’t supported the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray physical disc format before. Its maiden release on the format is going to be a fine one though: Alex Garland’s Civil War, which proved a success in cinemas earlier this year.
Boasting an ensemble led by Kirsten Dunst, the film was written and directed by Garland, and has clearly resonated, heading past $100m at the global box office. The movie, as you may well know, is quite a rage-filled piece of work, an entirely fictional piece about a divided America tearing itself apart. Thank the lord for the escapism of the movies.

Keep your big-budget extravaganzas and intellectual properties! These days, Hollywood actors are breathlessly lining up to join the Benoit Blanc Cinematic Universe. Ever since Rian Johnson singled-handedly revived the big screen whodunnit with 2019's "Knives Out," the mid-budget murder-mystery series has become the hottest destination for rising stars, A-listers, and under-sung veterans of the industry to flex their acting muscles as the various colorful characters that occupy this world. Even the property's shift from the theatrical market to the streaming landscape three years later with Netflix's "Glass Onion" wasn't enough to deter folks from flocking to these movies like they're the next "Dune" sequel.
Following the announcement of Johnson's third "Knives Out Mystery" last month (now officially titled "Wake Up Dead Man"), it's become a daily guessing game trying to figure out who will sign on to match wits with Daniel Craig's sharp-witted Southern sleuth Blanc next.

While, Hulu is not as flashy as some of the other streaming services like Netflix, Max, and Disney+, it has a solid library of shows that are both originals and licensed through various studios. Regarding sci-fi shows, Hulu doesn’t have any big names like 3 Body Problem or Westworld, but it makes up for that by carrying some great new and old shows like Devs and The X-Files, which were loved by millions of people. So, we thought of making a list of the best sci-fi TV shows you can find on Hulu right now.

Illustration by Stephanie Monohan.Kirsten Dunst has played a pageant contestant not once, but twice: famously, in the cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), then, in a self-reflexive turn in Showtime’s short-lived satire of predatory capitalism, On Becoming a God in Central Florida (2019). In the latter, Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs, a pageant queen turned widow turned cunning representative of the Founders American Merchandise corporation. In one scene, she instructs a goth teen on a stratagem of competition: “Dazzle by any means necessary. If you want better lightin’ than the other girls, give yourself better lightin’ than the other girls.”Dunst has built a career around this principle. Having started as a child star, she has supported superhero franchises, starred in teen movies and art films alike, and worked in both film and television. In each project, she follows Krystal’s advice, juggling each character’s interiority with bigger-picture concerns. She...

This post contains spoilers for Alex Garland's "Annihilation" and the source material.
Self-destruction is a sentiment wired into the human DNA. Irrespective of how put-together we feel about our standing with respect to the rest of humanity, these self-destructive tendencies, both overt and unconscious, creep in and threaten to tear us apart. It is relatively easy to capture the dramatic extremes of such a complex, universal feeling — one that is also so uniquely personal — but the nuances tend to be elusive, as these impulses remain indescribable. Alex Garland's stunning, uncompromising take on Jeff VanderMeer's first book in The Southern Reach Trilogy, "Annihilation," grabs these indescribable emotions by the throat, compelling us to look deep into the refracted images of our own selves with equal parts compassion and scrutiny. It is a film that can leave you feeling deeply moved, and deeply confused.

If you have Hulu (or Disney Star in Canada), you might have noticed that Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is no longer available. Indeed, Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, with them now only owning the rights to the Searchlight-financed sequel, 28 Weeks Later. That’s why you can’t find it on streaming sites and why the Blu-ray Disc is out of print. Sony now owns the rights to the film, with it being part of the package they acquired when they bought the rights to finance the upcoming Danny Boyle/ Alex Garland sequel, 28 Years Later. So, presumably, Sony will be reissuing the film in the near future, and there’s a chance that when they do, it’ll look much better than it ever did before. But why?

Director Yorgos Lanthimos’ highly-anticipated anthology film Kinds Of Kindness has a full trailer ahead of its release in the UK next month.
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone revealed their latest collaboration, Kinds Of Kindness, to the world at Cannes this month. Following 2019’s The Favourite and last year’s Poor Things, hopes are high that the film formerly known as And will continue their hot streak.
An anthology film, Stone and her fellow actors play multiple roles across three stories. We’ll be able to see the movie for ourselves in just under a month’s time when it releases in the UK. In the interim, Searchlight Pictures has released the full trailer, which we’ve enclosed below.
Here’s a synopsis, which is admirably vague in its wording:

Well, that's one way to resolve a years-long conspiracy theory among the weirdest and nerdiest of fans. The creative team behind "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is apparently taking no chances in the months leading up to season 2 of the Prime Video series, unwilling to let leaks or set photos ruin the biggest surprise in decades of Middle-earth lore. Instead, the fine folks over at Vanity Fair were given an exclusive first look at the burning question at the forefront of all our minds: Will the bizarre character known as Tom Bombadil, whose boots are yellow and is famously a merry fellow, appear in the streaming show?
The answer to that little riddle is now confirmed to be a resounding yes. After all the biggest and most popular adaptations of author J.R.R. Tolkien's work to this point went out of their way to avoid mentioning...

As usual, those epiphanies were a lot harder to come by in the official competition than in the risk-friendlier Directors’ Fortnight, an independent sidebar born in 1969 as a counterprogram dedicated, per its mission statement, “to showcasing the most singular forms of contemporary cinema.” It is here that some of the greatest have shown their earliest stuff, an illustrious pedigree that’s flaunted before each screening through a short reel...

Rian Johnson's Benoit Blanc detective series continues to be one of the hottest tickets for working actors, as proven by the most recent bit of casting news for the follow-up to "Glass Onion." According to Deadline, "Challengers" and "La Chimera" star Josh O'Connor will appear in the upcoming mystery movie, which we recently learned will feature the excellent title "Wake Up Dead Man." Alongside O'Connor, "Civil War" and "Priscilla" breakout star Cailee Spaeny is also set to appear. As of publication time, we don't know yet whether they'll play murder victims, suspects, or some other role in Johnson's next whodunnit.
Aside from star Daniel Craig, Spaeny and O'Connor are the first two actors to be announced as part of the project, and they're a pretty buzzy duo to kick things off. British actor O'Connor had already earned accolades for (among other projects) his turns on royal drama "The Crown...

Both the knives and casting notices are out!
The first two cast members to join ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ have been announced: two on-the-rise stars Cailee Spaeny and Josh O’Connor. The 25-year-old Spaeny is coming off of Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” which earned her a Golden Globe award and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at last year’s Venice Film Festival, and a terrific turn in one of this spring’s most talked-about films, Alex Garland’s “Civil War.” She’ll also be seen in this August’s “Alien: Romulus.” The British 34-year-old O’Connor was seen in two well-regarded movies this spring, Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera.”
The two will, of course, join Daniel Craig, returning as the “gentleman sleuth” Benoit Blanc. Writer-director Rian Johnson announced on social media that the movie is about to go into production, so...

Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny are reportedly in talks to join Daniel Craig in the ensemble for Rian Johnson’s next Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man.
Considering the exorbitant amount that Netflix paid Rian Johnson to make two Knives Out sequels, it figures that we have to see at least some of that reported $400m on the screen. That was certainly true in 2022’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery which boasted one of that year’s most stacked ensemble casts. As the third film in the series, Wake Up Dead Man, moves towards production, we’re already looking forward to a string of high-profile names circling the project.

After announcing the title for the new Knives Out installment last week, the first big names to join Daniel Craig in the next installment are Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny. They are both set to join Netflix’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Rian Johnson is returning to direct from a script he wrote. He will also produce the pic with his partner, Ram Bergman through T-Street Pictures.
Plot details are unknown, and as of now. The most recent pic, Glass Onion, bowed in 2022, with Craig returning as the world-famous detective Benoit Blanc. The film premiered on Netflix after the streamer made a record-setting $450 million deal for the two sequels, with this being the third in the series.

Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.
Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). One factor differentiating the two is that “Civil War” was released on Friday, while “Fall” debuted the previous Tuesday. That gave the latter an edge on Fandango, which has a weekly Monday-Sunday chart. It was #1 on iTunes on Wednesday through Friday, with “Civil War” #1 since.
“Fall” of course has been a disappointment in theaters. With a head of steam ahead of opening to excellent reviews, Ryan Gosling momentum, and a prime early May release date,...

The most controversial film of 2024 has already been released and is attracting criticism from all sides. Written and directed by the visionary filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Civil War has proven to be a massive hit for the A24. Civil War has everything you need including striking visuals, a gripping story, and complex characters. While there are people from both sides of the political aisle criticizing the film for not picking a side, I think that Garland did a wonderful job at showing us a broken America without blaming any political party for it.
Civil War is set in a dystopian future America suffering from a civil war as a team of military-embedded journalists race against time to get to Washington D.C. to interview the President before rebel factions take over the White House and kill the President. Forget the "Walking Dead" comics or the first "Resident Evil" film; it was "28 Days Later" that made zombies cool again in the 21st century. Easily the best zombie movie that technically isn't a zombie movie, director Danny Boyle's sci-fi horror thriller takes place in a nightmare world where society has collapsed following the outbreak of a lab-born, zombie-esque infection dubbed the "rage virus." Many of the film's leads would go on to become far bigger names after its release, including a baby-faced Cillian Murphy as the poor Joe Schmo (or whatever the British equivalent is of that) who awakens from a coma to find London abandoned and overrun with red-eyed, rampaging infected individuals.
The first produced film written by Alex Garland, "28 Days Later" marked the beginning of the storyteller's exploration of transformed landscapes and physical bodies (a motif he's carried over into his non-sci-fi work with the...

As Neon was justly feted this weekend for a fifth consecutive Cannes Palme d’Or winner (Anora), it also had a nice showing at home with a terrific expansion for indie Babes.
The feature directorial debut of Pamela Adlon jumped from a 12-screen opening last week to 590 and hit no. 9 at the domestic box office with an estimated $1.06 million three-day weekend and cume of circa $1.29 million. Over the four days, including the Memorial Day holiday, the gross approaches $1.23 million and the cume $1.46 million.
The film follows inseparable childhood best friends Eden (Ilana Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) who grew up together in NYC but are now firmly in different phases of adulthood. When carefree and single Eden decides to have a baby on her own after a one-night stand, their complex friendship faces its greatest challenge. Co-written by Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz.

I’d rather not go into why Alex Garland picked America to be the war zone in Civil War, although I can think of more than a couple reasons that might’ve motivated the choice. And I’ll tell you why I think that discussion would be a waste of time. In Garland’s Civil War, starring a breathtaking Kirsten Dunst and a shockingly effective Wagner Moura, the setting is a terrarium of pain and death presented and observed with near-unflinching neutrality. Desensitized neutrality is mandatory in war photojournalism. In the story of Lee, Joel, Jessie, and Sammy chasing a scoop on the civil war that’s broken out and a denial-driven fascist in the Oval Office, America is merely a war hawk. It could’ve been any other place, any other time. And the only thing that’d remain relevant is the frustrating futility of it all.

As if “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” isn’t enough of a caffeine boost, this week’s digital debuts include no fewer than four heart-pounding thrill rides. First up, a movie-star vehicle that doubles as an ode to stunt work.
The contender to watch this week: “The Fall Guy“
David Leitch‘s action comedy adapted from the ’80s TV show of the same name had all the makings of an early summer blockbuster: adrenaline-pumping stunts, charismatic lead turns from Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, and generally favorable reviews. So why is Universal dropping it on VOD just 17 days after the release? Probably because “The Fall Guy” is perceived to be something of a flop. That line of thinking isn’t totally fair considering the movie has made $128.3 million and counting worldwide. Still, the studio expected more, especially because “The Fall Guy” seems like it will just barely recoup its budget in theaters.
