Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror is back for season 7 and the cast – Paul Giamatti! Rashida Jones! – has been confirmed.
As we’re not far off time of year where we rewatch our festive favourites, special mention has to go to White Christmas., the Black Mirror episode which must surely be a contender for the most upsetting Christmas special in history, featuring as it does the concept of blocking people in real life and a final scene with a concept too horrifying to imagine.
Beginning as a drama on Channel 4 in 2010 before moving to Netflix from series 3 in 2016, so far six series worth of twisted tales have come from the unrelentingly dark imagination of Charlie Brooker. From AI to memory chips, futuristic societies to an interactive special, Brooker’s pen has thus far always been prescient, predicting many developments in technology that have actually come true.
The seventh season is now in production for Netflix.

“Black Mirror” Season 7 is on the way next year, and Netflix has released a teaser trailer this afternoon that seems to hint at episode storylines while also revealing the full cast.
“Charlie Brooker’s dark, satirical anthology series is already in production on six brand new episodes for Season 7, which will stream on Netflix in 2025,” Netflix recently announced.
The streamer continued, “Brooker and the Black Mirror creative team aren’t giving away any specific spoilers, but they are teasing one major nugget of information: One of the episodes will be a sequel to the now-classic Season 4 opener, USS Callister.”
“The high-profile episode starred Jesse Plemons as Robert Daly, a brilliant but troubled programmer who co-founded a popular online video game,” Netflix recaps. “Unhappy with a perceived lack of recognition at his gaming company, Robert created a simulated reality within the game, giving himself the role of a Captain Kirk–like...

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. The four to win for fictional parts were Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker), and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). Awards season will be in full swing at the Emmys on Sunday, and with it comes a new wave of heightened speculation about who got suddenly skinny for the red carpet — and whether they used Ozempic to get there.
The pressure on celebrities about their looks is nothing new and neither are medical methods to improve them. But the popularity of Ozempic and the rapid, dramatic results it creates has fueled a debate over a kind of reverse body-shaming — did she or didn’t she Ozempic? — and some are pushing back.
“It’s the last acceptable bias,” Oprah Winfrey, a veteran of the weight-loss wars, said during her recent TV special on the topic. She parted ways with her longtime sponsor Weight Watchers after revealing she was using an unspecified weight-loss drug. “Let’s stop the shaming and blaming. There’s no place for it.”

Even Bryan Cranston was shocked at one despicable act committed by Walter White in Breaking Bad. Interestingly, Cranston revealed that he had no clue that he actually poisoned the kid.

On September 1, The Brutalist premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. The “wildly ambitious” epic historical drama received a 13-minute standing ovation, with critics calling it a “masterpiece” and the “next Godfather.” The most exciting part of the film for some? Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend stars in it. In Joe Alwyn’s most acclaimed role to date, The Brutalist confirms that the 33-year-old is truly a star on the rise.

Yesterday, we posted a poll asking readers what they thought was the best summer 2024 movie. By a landslide, the winner was Deadpool & Wolverine, but the runner-up was George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which was an infamously giant flop earlier this summer. In this case, the box office result didn’t do justice to the quality of the film itself – at least according to us here at JoBlo. But Furiosa wasn’t the only good movie that came out this summer that get enough love.
Here are five underrated summer 2024 movies:

Our top pick this week is five-time Academy Award nominee Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy “Kinds of Kindness,” which is now streaming on Hulu. It’s Lanthimos’ third collaboration with Emma Stone, after “The Favourite” and “Poor Things.” It’s unlikely to make as strong a showing at the Academy Awards as those two, but that’s pretty much by design, as the film’s anthology structure and darkly absurdist tone make it not the kind of thing that wins Oscars. Jesse Plemons did win Best Actor at Cannes, though, so he could be a longshot contender in that category, especially at the Golden Globes.
The film consists of three loosely connected stories about people experiencing various forms of severe distress. In addition to Stone and Plemons, the cast includes Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamadou Athie.

“Kinds of Kindness” is a movie directed by Yorgos Lanthimos starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe. With Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Mamoudou Athie.
The ever-ingenious Yorgos Lanthimos returns to the cinematic arena, accompanied by his muses, actress Emma Stone and actor Willem Dafoe, to once again defy the norms, provoke the audience, and present us with a feast for the senses on both aesthetic and narrative fronts.
This film is constructed like a disassembled jigsaw puzzle, leaving it to the audience to piece together the chaotic fragments of characters from a collective psyche that seems to lack self-awareness. “Kinds of Kindness” is not an easy watch and certainly isn’t tailored for everyone. It demands viewers to abandon conventional narrative expectations and embrace the notion that the natural coherence of cinema can be entirely inverted and turned on its head.
Seemingly without rhyme or reason, the film aims to engage the viewer,...

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: third time might just be the charm for the proposed merger of Skydance Media and Paramount Global. What does that mean? We’re glad you asked…
Huh? What’s happening? Who’s Edgar Bronfman? Help!
Don’t worry, we’ve gotten ourselves in a right muddle over this Paramount business, too. If you’ve been living under, on or around a rock more than a few feet from the media enterprise’s boardroom, stay tuned for a quick look back at a particularly narratively unsatisfying corporate staring contest. We’ll make it fun, we promise.
If you’re already exceptionally clued-in then here’s the latest: Edgar Bronfman Jr. – the head of an investment group who offered a last-minute bid for the embattled Paramount Global last week – announced on Monday that he was ending his bid for the company.

The cast for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film is taking shape with some of Hollywood’s finest joining Tom Cruise in the cast.
Last we heard about Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film was in February when Tom Cruise was attached to star.
Now, Deadline reports that the film’s cast has gotten significantly bigger. Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde are all on board The Revenant director’s new film. Riz Ahmed is also in the final stages of negotiations to join the cast. That’s a lot of star power and it has certainly caught our attention.
Hüller’s career has really taken off since her Oscar nomination for the tremendous Anatomy Of A Fall and it’s great to see a young star such as Wilde in the cast. Wilde was seen in Talk To Me, one of last year’s finest horror films.

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is teaming up with acclaimed director Alejandro G. Iñárritu for an untitled drama film. Iñárritu, known for award-winning movies like Birdman and The Revenant, will direct the movie. The film has assembled a talented cast that includes Tom Cruise as well as several Oscar-winning and nominated actors.
Little is known about the film’s plot, but it is described as a “high-stakes drama.” Sources say the storyline follows “the most powerful man in the world” as he desperately tries to prove he can save humanity from a disaster he caused. This premise suggests audiences will see Cruise take on a serious dramatic role outside the action movies he’s known for.
Joining Cruise in the film are actors with proven dramatic abilities like Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Rising star Sophie Wilde and Oscar winner Riz Ahmed are also expected to star.

Director Sean Baker‘s “Anora” won the grand prize, the Palme d’Or, at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. It was the first American film to claim top honors at the prestigious international competition since “The Tree of Life” in 2011. Does that mean it’s in good shape going into Oscar season? Despite its world renown, Cannes is hit-and-miss when it comes to anointing later awards contenders, often selecting art films that don’t end up resonating with the industry insiders in the academy. But in recent years the Oscars have been on the same page as the Cannes jury more often.

A seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror will be making its way to the Netflix streaming service sometime in 2025 – and while episodes of the show have branched out into different genres as it has gone along, during an interview with Deadline, series creator Charlie Brooker said that the episodes of Black Mirror season 7 will be like the “Og Black Mirror.”
Brooker said, “We’re doing some things we’ve not done before. People can expect quite a lot of emotion and, hopefully, a good mix of chills. We did a couple of horror stories in Season 6, which we label as Red Mirror. But this time around, the episodes are all, in a way, like Og Black Mirror. I wrote one script, and the general consensus was that it was one of the bleakest, heaviest gut punches yet. There’s also techy episodes and ones that are making people cry.

In medieval Europe, whole communities came together at public executions, drinking and dancing and collectively purging their sins through ceremonial bloodshed. In early 21st-century America, smaller groups gathered at multiplexes for a similar rite: Exorcizing national guilt by watching graphic torture scenes in horror movies. The latter was, of course, sanitized — the actors in these films were only pretending to be in pain, and the audience was distanced from the action by the invisible wall of a movie screen. But the psychological processes at play weren’t so different.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ black absurdist comedy Kinds of Kindness was initially titled And. It brings to the fore two huge superstars in the form of Willem Dafoe and Emma Stone, who play multiple roles in three different yet related stories that play out in the movie.
Released in June 2024, Kinds of Kindness saw Emma Stone star opposite Jesse Plemons’ Robert, whose boss, Raymond, is portrayed by Dafoe. As it turns out, one particular scene involved Emma Stone slapping Dafoe’s Raymond off-screen, following which they converse in an actual sequence in the movie.

Between that and "The Favourite" in 2018, the typically off-putting and idiosyncratic Lanthimos suddenly found himself at risk of being known as a name-brand artist among general audiences. At least, that was the case before he followed that up with "Kinds of Kindness" in June of this year, which might as well have felt like a middle finger directed straight at his newfound popularity. Look no further than the synopsis, after all:
