The epic FX series “Shōgun” lives and dies in the smallest moments and details. The series thrives due to its painstaking approach to telling authentic stories with heavily researched, period-accurate costumes, sets, wigs and even plot narratives. Each crew member labored over every single wig, sword, choreographed step and or piece of dialogue while adapting James Clavell’s novel of the same name.
So it’s no real surprise when “Shogun’s” climatic fight between main character Toda Mariko (played by the brilliant Anna Sawai) and a bevy of guards isn’t a wire-work piece of spectacle, but rather, a guttural painful act of defiance and desperation for our hero. In fact, the very premise of this fight sequence is (on the surface) quite simple: a woman tries to leave.

Baby Reindeer (Netflix)
What makes this show addictive is also what makes it disturbing, devastating and occasionally funny: its brutal honesty. Richard Gadd’s account of stalking and abuse spares no one, least of all his semi-autobiographical stand-in. But it also finds empathy for imperfect victims and troubled perpetrators alike — the latter played by Jessica Gunning with ferocious commitment. — Angie Han
Extraordinary (Hulu)
In a TV landscape teeming with superpowered folks, this series stands out — and not just because its protagonist, Jen (Máiréad Tyers), is the rare adult in her universe without a special ability. Really a quarterlife coming-of-age comedy in genre packaging, the second season digs even deeper into its characters’ psyches to explore themes as relatable as sexuality and loss. — A.H.
Fantasmas (HBO)
A show that could only have come from Julio Torres, the surreal mind behind Los Espookys, Fantasmas follows a writer trying to avoid being evicted.

For all the attention paid to acting races, the writing categories are equally competitive — if not more so. Among the contenders, there are two shows, one in drama and the other in the comedy category, with especially strong episodes worthy of consideration. The second season of FX’s “The Bear,” competing for the comedy trophy, overflowed with compelling storytelling, but only one episode, titled “Fishes,” was submitted. On the drama side, FX’s “Shōgun” was strong over the course of 10 episodes. However, the premiere, “Anjin,” is impossible to ignore.
Here, senior awards editor Clayton Davis and TV critic Alison Herman make the argument for each.

After weeks of FYC events and relentless campaigning from studios, voting for the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations has officially begun, with Television Academy members holding ballots in hand.
Nearly 24,000 industry professionals, divided among 31 professional peer groups, sit among the organization’s ranks, each member voting on specific categories. However, every eligible voter can cast a ballot in the top 15 series races: comedy, drama, limited or anthology, television movie, talk, variety special (live), variety special (pre-recorded), short form (comedy/drama/variety), short form (nonfiction/reality), hosted nonfiction, structured reality, unstructured reality, reality competition, scripted variety and game show.
According to TV Academy rules, the number of nominees is determined by the number of submissions. However, drama and comedy series are designated for eight shows each to make the final cut. There were 229 total series submitted in the drama, comedy, and limited or anthology series categories, compared to 309 last year, marking a 33% decrease.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has more A-list actors than any other major franchise in Hollywood, making stars of newcomers such as Simu Liu, Sebastian Stan, and Tom Holland while also weaving in veterans such as Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, and Cate Blanchett. The sheer amount of talent on display across the MCU’s many movies and TV shows means that, naturally, the MCU has its fingers in every awards show pie. In other awards, you’ll always find an MCU alum or two nominated at any major awards ceremony. So, speaking of that, here are eight MCU actors past and present we think will be nominated for an Emmy this year.
Donald Glover — “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”
Okay, so admittedly Glover isn’t the first name you think of when you conjure up MCU actors, but he did feature in a scene with Holland’s Spider-Man in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” as Aaron Davis,...

[This story contains spoilers for season one of Shōgun season one.]
While celebrating season one of Shōgun at an Emmys For Your Consideration event on Tuesday, the team behind the hit FX series gave a few hints at what the future of the show may look like.
Last month, it was announced that second and third seasons are in development, expanding the story past its original limited series format. That expansion will see the show move beyond the James Clavell book that inspired the series and was entirely covered in season one.
Co-creator Justin Marks said he and fellow creator Rachel Kondo (who are married) have been plotting ahead on a potential season two since December and joked they are at the “arguing” stage of development.
“And shooting down each other’s ideas,” Kondo added. “No, there’s a lot of chaos but creative chaos, where we’re throwing everything that we have at the wall, seeing what sticks.

It’s a late April afternoon when Shōgun breakout star Anna Sawai, who stars as the fierce Lady Toda Mariko in the gorgeously wrought, sharply modernized adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 bestseller, spots castmate Tadanobu Asano and producer-star Hiroyuki Sanada across a studio floor. Her face lights up. It hasn’t even been a week since FX’s runaway hit historical drama ended its debut season on a breathtaking note of bittersweet catharsis, having enthralled viewers over 10 episodes with its sweeping saga of survival and sacrifice in 17th Century Japan. But as the rising actress reunites with her Shōgun co-stars, a new charge of electricity crackles in the air.
Mariko-sama, Lord Yoshii Toranaga, and the impish schemer Kashigi Yabushige, together again in another life. The trio has traveled from far-flung cities to mark a groundbreaking moment in which Shōgun is setting sail for a new destination: the Emmys.

Even with its entire storyline adapted in a single season, Game of Thrones rival Shōgun has been an effortless masterpiece so far, loved by fans from all around the globe. As incredibly immersive as its entire storyline was, it was also filled with heartbreaks along the way.
For instance, Anna Sawai’s character Toda Mariko’s death scene was one of the most heart-wrenching events of the story.

That said, fans inevitably want her to return to the saga, now that the series is reportedly being revived for a second and third season.
And, as it turns out, Sawai just may return through an epic Game of Thrones twist that brought one other fan-favorite character from the GoT lore back from the dead after killing him off. That is, if the creators decide to take that stream.

Since premiering on May 31 (the exact cutoff date for 76th Emmys eligibility), HBO’s “The Great Lillian Hall” has become an undeniably strong contender in this year’s wide-open Best TV Movie race. In the past week alone, its Gold Derby program category odds jumped from 40/1 to 18/1 while lead and supporting cast members Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates both moved closer to predicted nominee status.
“The Great Lillian Hall” has found some of its greatest support among our team of in-house editors, more than half of whom are officially on board with it and Lange being nominated. Bates – who held 100/1 general odds until last Thursday and now sits at 62/1 – is on track to at least crack said subgroup’s movie/limited supporting actress lineup very soon.
Our editors’ consensus picks have indeed changed quite a bit in the last week, with the most noticeable developments involving newly predicted winners Richard Gadd and Claire Foy.

X-men '97 Scores TCA Nomination For Outstanding New Program Alongside Shogun, Ripley & Baby Reindeer

The Television Critics Association announced their picks for the best shows of the 2023-2024 TV season on Monday, and in a pleasantly surprising development, Marvel Studios' recent Disney+ series, X-Men '97, picked up two significant nominations.
The animated revival scored nominations for Outstanding New Program and Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming.
Though X-Men '97 proved to be a big hit with fans and critics alike, it's rare that an animated series - and a superhero animated series at that - would receive any TCA recognition, especially outside of the Children's Programming category.
What are the mutant heroes' chances of picking up the win? Well, the show is up against some heavy hitters such as Shōgun, Baby Reindeer and Ripley, so, fittingly, they are the underdogs here.
Former showrunner Beau DeMayo shared the following post in response to the news.

Shōgun music duo Atticus Ross and Nick Chuba joined Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event to discuss reutilizing archaic styles of music for the FX series.
Based on James Clavell’s novel, Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him. When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies: the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants.
Toranaga’s and Blackthorne’s fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape,...

Hiroyuki Sanada’s Shōgun has earned itself the reputation of being a great TV series, especially for bringing a fresher perspective to the current age, where remakes and adaptations are gaining a detested reputation. The show is an adaptation of James Clavell’s novel from 1975 of the same name. The series’ dedication to being true to the source material garnered it a massive fan following.

For the second year in a row, three shows have topped the Television Critics Association nominations. “Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley” and “Shōgun” lead Monday’s nominations for the 40th annual awards with five bids each.
All three shows are up for Program of the Year, a category dominated by FX and Netflix. The former fielded three nominees with “Shōgun” “The Bear” and “Reservation Dogs,” while the latter is repped by “Baby Reindeer” and “Ripley.” Max’s “Hacks” is the sole non-fx and non-Netflix nominee.
Last year, “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and “The Bear” scored five nominations apiece. “Succession” and “The Bear” wound up with two wins each, with the former taking Program of the Year, but “The Last of Us” went 0-5.
After expanding to eight slots per category in 2021, TCA has reverted to six slots. No reason was given.
More curious, however, is the unprecedented double-dipping by three shows.

Adam Wingard brought new life into the Monsterverse with his two films Godzilla Vs Kong and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. His films followed up on what was laid down in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Wingard brought back the fun and scale of a Kaiju film with the large-scale battle between Godzilla and Kong in his first film and expanded the world further with The New Empire.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire saw the introduction of new monsters like The Skar King and Shimo. Additionally, audiences were surprised by the return of Mothra in the film. The audiences assumed it was the same Mothra from King of the Monsters, Wingard refuted that by adding an interesting lore to the fan-favorite creature.

“Baby Reindeer” was among the winners at the first-ever Gotham TV Awards on Tuesday evening, taking home the prize for breakthrough limited series.
“I never thought in a million years that this dark, weird, messed up show would have brought in this universal love that it’s received,” said Richard Gadd, the show’s creator and star, in his acceptance speech. He also thanked Netflix, his team and his mom and dad for “messing [him] up enough to make [him] an artist.”
Gadd went on to say, “It’s kind of weird also that a show as messed up as this has gone on to strike a chord with so many people. I think it speaks to the fact that a lot of people in the world are struggling right now. And I don’t know much in the way of advice, but I do know that nothing lasts forever. Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Playing Challenging Roles. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Nicole Kidman recently opened up about the psychological effects of playing challenging roles. The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actress Roundtable recently featured Nicole Kidman, Brie Larson, Anna Sawai, and Naomi Watts. During the discussion, the actresses weighed in on the stress of taking on challenging roles.
During the Hollywood Reporter interview, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman revealed that after a rough day filming Big Little Lies, she threw a rock through a locked door, breaking its window. During the roundtable discussion, Jodie Foster asked Nicole Kidman about the incident.
In response, Nicole Kidman revealed she was so “pissed off” after filming the show that covered domestic violence that she took out her frustration at a locked door with a window. The actress recalled, “I threw a rock because [the door] was locked, and I couldn’t get in. I’d never done that in my life.

On a Sunday afternoon in late April, seven of this year’s Emmy frontrunners convened at The Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica. There were four Oscars and another 18 Emmy nominations between them, but the web of shared experience went far beyond hardware.
Earlier in their collective careers, at least a few of them starred opposite each other onscreen (Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Aniston among them); one actress (in this case, Naomi Watts) played the mother of another (Brie Larson); and still another actress (Jodie Foster) had graciously stepped in when a second (Kidman) had to bow out of a role. Griselda‘s Sofia Vergara and Aniston share an acting coach, Anna Sawai and Larson share a history in music, and Watts and Kidman share a friendship that dates back 40 years.
It all contributed to an hour of easy, intimate conversation, which covered everything from mentorship to menopause. Their time together...

As a stunt performer with more than 300 credits to his name and three decades of stunt coordination experience, Lauro Chartrand-DelValle was the obvious choice to teach the cast of FX’s Shogun how to battle. Between an avalanche, shipwrecks and explosive battle training, the stunt coordinator’s scope of work was broad, but while the series itself has a majestic range, Chartrand-DelValle kept the kills intimate. “We were all about one cut, one kill,” he states. THR spoke with him about traveling to the 1600s for what he calls his “dream job.”
How did you research the time period?
Because what I had done before, in The Last Samurai, was later in history, I read up on this particular time period. They also brought in specialists from Japan that we learned so much from. But every step of the way, just when you thought you knew something, you really didn’t know it.

Sofía Vergara has shared some behind-the-scenes stories about The Hollywood Reporter‘s latest cover story, highlighting this year’s drama actress roundtable.

So her team wanted her to cancel, with them telling her, “We don’t think you’re in good shape, you’re not looking good.'” At the time, she was relying on a walker to move around, as she couldn’t walk.
“I was like, ‘I’m not missing that cover with Jennifer Aniston, with Nicole Kidman, with all [of them],” she recalled.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

Brie Larson may not be the most popular actress in a superhero suit around, but her advice to every actor who takes on such a role is noteworthy. Larson shared that she would reach out to these actors via email to give them insights into the training for the role and particularly costume advice. Handling a spandex is not an easy job as a superhero actor and Larson knows it enough to share her two cents on the matter.

Brie Larson knows the highs and lows of working in the superhero world. She made her own superhero debut in the 2019 film Captain Marvel, which earned over $1 billion at the global box office and became one of the top 25 highest grossing films of all time. She played the character again in Avengers: Endgame, which was released just weeks after Captain Marvel and earned almost $3 billion at the box office, briefly becoming the #1 highest grossing film of all time. We saw Larson’s Captain Marvel again in the 2021 hit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, an episode of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, and last year’s The Marvels… which did not replicate Captain Marvel‘s success, making just over $200 million at the box office and becoming the lowest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are a lot of varying opinions about Larson’s performance and attitude, but...

The turn of the millennium brought about a rapid and progressive change in Hollywood. From shrinking the pay gap to featuring prominently in leading roles, women began to usher in a true sense of modern film-making. Stark examples in the form of Mean Girls, Gravity, The Morning Show, and Captain Marvel have become flag-bearers of this change. In recognition of this showcase of women’s power, a Drama Actress Roundtable took place courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter.

The many artists who meticulously dedicate themselves to the making of a project of entertainment and serve more or less a worldwide audience, form the backbone of Hollywood. The industry has long realized the need to honor such artists for their merits and performances and hence, the existence of numerous prestigious award ceremonies such as the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and the Emmys, among others.

The line-up for the new series of Variety’s Actors On Actors has been revealed, with high profile movie performers interviewing each other.
Variety’s Actors On Actors is one of the most delightful series you can watch as a film fan. The central conceit is that two actors sit down for a natter about their work, often going off on tangents, acting as a unique insight into the industry.
Generally, the pairings are quite surprising, with the actors concerned often never having worked together and, in some cases, seeming quite random, but each one is fascinating and, usually, an absolute hoot. You can see Kate Winslet shooting the breeze with Gary Oldman, for example, or Beanie Feldstein with Florence Pugh – we are still waiting for Jason Statham to make an appearence.

“I don’t know if anybody told you, but none of us knows what we’re doing,” announces two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster halfway through the Drama Actress Emmy Roundtable. She’s surrounded by two more Oscar winners — Expats’ Nicole Kidman and Lessons in Chemistry’s Brie Larson — who nod in agreement. The True Detective star continues, “and that’s the real beauty of it, having that freshness of doubting yourself.” Over the course of an hour at The Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica, that trio, along with The Morning Show’s Jennifer Aniston, Shogun’s Anna Sawai, Griselda’s Sofía Vergara and Feud’s Naomi Watts, discuss everything from mentorship to menopause.

The critically acclaimed series Shogun is on the brink of securing a second season at FX, with star Hiroyuki Sanada confirming his return as Lord Toranaga. This exciting news comes amidst much speculation about the show’s future direction, especially after the dramatic and intense conclusion of season one. Challenges Without Key Characters While the prospect of new episodes is thrilling, Shogun faces notable challenges without key figures like Anna Sawai’s Mariko. John Blackthorne, played by Cosmo Jarvis, and Lord Toranaga will undoubtedly carry much of the narrative forward. Reflecting on James Clavell’s original work, FX chairman John Landgraf noted, It’s...

In the week since our 2024 Emmy predictions center expanded to include the guest acting categories, a strong consensus has formed around four potential winners from three different series. The one show that is expected to achieve double victories in this area is FX’s “The Bear,” which won’t have much trouble doing so if our users are correct about it taking up seven of the possible 12 comedy guest nomination slots.
The widely predicted guest winners from “The Bear” are Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis, the former of whom was just nominated last year for the show’s inaugural season. The likeliest drama guest victors are potential Emmy first-timer Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”) and 2021 champ Claire Foy (“The Crown”). Foy would be only the third actress to win twice in her category for one role, after Patricia Clarkson (“Six Feet Under”) and Margo Martindale (“The Americans”).

American films and television invariably brush up against the issue of language. Since these stories are made for mass appeal — and said mass is English-speaking audiences — the films will depict characters speaking English even if that shouldn't be the case. Take films set during Roman times like "Spartacus" or "Gladiator," which have dialogue spoken only in English, not Latin or even a closer modern stand-in like Italian.
Then there are films with characters from different countries, yet the audience hears them all speaking the same tongue. Some handle this more cleverly than others; in "The Hunt for Red October," the Soviet characters are first heard speaking Russian before a quick switch to English -- letting the audience know while they're hearing English, the characters are hearing Russian.
"Shōgun," which recently went from mini-series to a two-season renewal, makes no attempt to hold its audience's hand. Set in 1600 Japan, Lord Yoshii...

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”
Aaron Pruner (The Wrap) observed: “Erskine, who many will recognize as the brace-faced 13-year old in Hulu comedy “PEN15,...

“The Good Wife” introduced Carrie Preston‘s Elsbeth Tascioni back in 2010. She was so popular with fans that she also featured in the spin-off show “The Good Fight.” Now Preston and Elsbeth take center stage in the brand new spin-off “Elsbeth.”
CBS’ hit drama series follows Elsbeth as she carries out work as an unconventional attorney and helps the NYPD catch criminals with her astute observations. Preston was excellent in her guest role in “The Good Wife” but she is even better here as the main course, as critics have noted.
Ben Travers (Indie Wire) observed: “Preston knows the exact pitch at which to play Elsbeth. Never grating yet always pesky, her unrelenting positivity (and general relentlessness) would undoubtedly get old, fast, in real life. Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we reassess drama, now with “Shōgun.”
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we went from having no clear frontrunner in the Best Drama Series category to what seems like a runway favorite. Last week, FX finally announced “Shōgun” will compete as a drama series as two additional seasons are being planned for… sometime in the future. Good for Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo and producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada. Not only will they get paid for spearheading the year’s one real breakout show not named “Baby Reindeer,” but they’re also more likely than ever to win Emmys for their work. The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November into January (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here), and while Godzilla was an important figure in that season, it wrapped up with an episode that indicated Kong might be taking the spotlight if there were to be a follow-up. The show was co-developed by Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye), and during a recent interview with Gold Derby, Black said that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 is aiming to be bigger and better – while giving viewers the Kong action they’re hoping to see.

Jennifer Aniston delivered another star-powered performance in the new season of Apple TV’s flagship series, “The Morning Show.” The series follows the behind-the-scenes drama of a morning TV show in the US, with co-anchors Alex Levy (Aniston) and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) at the center of events.
The latest season (season three) depicts Alex quite literally heading into space while she tussles with Jon Hamm‘s tech mogul as a media merger for her show’s network, Uba, bubbles away. Aniston proved herself a master of comedy with “Friends” and here shows, once again, that she has the dramatic acting chops to equal her comedic skills. Aniston is captivating every time she’s on-screen and it’s a delight to see her in one of the meatiest roles of her career, as noted by critics.
Peter Travers (ABC News) declared: “Aniston has never been better, letting us see the...
