Fresh off six Emmy wins for Netflix’s “Baby Reinder,” the limited series’ creator, executive producer, writer and star Richard Gadd is expanding his relationship with the streamer with a multi-year scripted series first-look deal.
“I’m beyond thrilled to be continuing my creative journey with Netflix. They took a chance on me when I wasn’t proven in the television space for that I will always be grateful,” Gadd said in a statement. “I look forward to the years ahead with Netflix ideas with Ted, Bela, Anne, Peter and all the amazing staff who work at the company.”
News of the expanded partnership was revealed by Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos during The Royal Television Society (Rts) London Convention.

Exclusive: Richard Gadd, who won three Emmys on Sunday for his hugely popular Netflix limited series Baby Reindeer, has signed a multi-year first-look deal with the global streamer for scripted series. Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos is expected to announce the pact today at The Royal Television Society London Convention.
While it’s been unveiled on the heels of Baby Reindeer’s standout performance at the Emmys where it dominated the longform field with six wins, including Outstanding Limited Series, I hear the two sides agreed to the deal last month, after the show had landed 11 Emmy nominations.
Netflix is a logical partner for Gadd following their collaboration on Baby Reindeer which became a global phenomenon, spending 8 weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 for English-language TV programs and amassing 88.4M views in its first 91 days of release to briefly make Netflix’s Top 10 most popular series list.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

It was a tame throwback Sunday at the Emmy Awards tonight with blasts from the past taking center stage in a show seemingly longing for another era.
Besides the unexpected and well deserved Best Comedy win for Hacks, the show was full of predictable trophies for FX’s Shōgun and The Bear and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. Along with anticipated victories for True Detective: Night Country’s Jodie Foster, The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki and Hacks’ Jean Smart, Sunday’s nostalgia-heavy, nearly three-hour 76th Primetime Emmy Awards was punctuated by a crowd-pleasing West Wing 25th anniversary reunion, featuring Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff and Dulé Hill.
Even so, there was not much new to be said there on this small screen display of back to the future.
“Our political landscape has shifted dramatically in recent years,” stated Moloney, the show’s Donna Moss, “but two things...

Only eight months after the last Emmy ceremony (which was delayed due to the strikes), the Primetime Emmy Awards are back, although there were some big surprises in store. Everyone (myself included) expected The Bear to own every category it was nominated in. While it did well, winning many big categories including Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, it lost Best Comedy Series (and actress) to Hacks.
Netflix’s controversial limited series Baby Reindeer also cleaned up, nabbing awards for star and creator Richard Gadd plus co-star Jessica Gunning. But, FX was the evening’s big winner, with their epic series, Shogun, dominating the drama categories, with the great Hiroyuki Sanada winning the prize for Best Actor, and Anna Sawai taking Best Actress, alongside the show’s Best Drama win. After a tight race up against some of the most beloved shows of the season, Netflix phenomenon “Baby Reindeer” won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. The win for the record-breaking British dramedy from creator and star Richard Gadd was the last of the Tk Emmys it received at the 76th edition of the Emmy Awards, hosted by “Schitt’s Creek” Emmy winners Eugene and Dan Levy.
“Baby Reindeer” was nominated against “Fargo” (FX), “Lessons in Chemistry” (Apple TV+), “Ripley” (Netflix), and “True Detective: Night Country” (HBO) for the award.
Based on his one man show of the same name, which won two Edinburgh Fringe awards in 2019, “Baby Reindeer” tells the story of an aspiring stand-up comic that catches the eye of a female stalker, leading to a warped relationship between the pair that forces him to confront past trauma. “Baby Reindeer” also stars Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill,...

John Leguizamo is “almost happy and certainly less angry” with the nominees for the 2024 Emmys.
When taking the stage during Sunday night’s show, the Emmy-winning actor was quick to point out, “I’m one of Hollywood’s Dei hires. That’s right, Dei. The ‘D’ is for diligence, the ‘E’ is for excellence, the ‘I’ is for imagination. And everyone in this room tonight has dedicated their lives to diligence, excellence and imagination, so we are all Dei hires. What a beautiful diverse group this is tonight.”
He went on to reflect on when he was growing up in Queens, New York, he “didn’t know that people like me could be actors.”
“At 15, I didn’t know the word representation… but I saw a lot of brown face” he said, pointing out varied actors for their portrayal of Latin characters despite not being of Latin descent, including Marlon Brando for playing Mexican,...

Writer-actor Richard Gadd made a heartfelt speech at the Emmys on Sunday night addressing the plights and difficult subject matter of the semi-autobiographical limited Netflix series Baby Reindeer.
Honoring his win for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series, in his speech, Gadd reflected: “This is the stuff of dreams. 10 years ago, I was down and outright. I never, ever thought I’d get my life together. I never ever thought I’d be able to rectify myself with what happened to me and get myself back on my feet again. Then here I am, just over a decade later, picking up one of the biggest writing awards in television.”
Baby Reindeer centers on comedian Donny Dunn’s (Gadd) parasocial and twisted relationship with a female stalker named Martha (Jessica Gunning), and the impact that it has on him as he unravels the deep traumas of his past. The...

Fresh off her Emmy win for her performance in Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” star Jessica Gunning revealed she never saw her character Martha as a villain.
“I never saw her as a villain — I just saw her as a complicated, lonely character,” Gunning told press just moments after receiving her Emmy on Sunday. “It was really all there in the script for me — I just connected with her.”
To prepare for the role, Gunning took inspiration from 1990’s “Misery,” which the actress mentioned reached a different level for her when she accepted her Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series from “Misery” star Kathy Bates.
“I looked a little bit into a thing called ‘limerence,’ which is like obsession — obsession with being obsessed with people,” Gunning explained.
Gunning was drawn into the script for Richard Gadd’s miniseries from the get-go, recalling she read all seven episodes in one sitting.

John Leguizamo didn’t mince words when it came to diversity and inclusion in Hollywood during his speech at the 76th Emmy Awards.
Right at the top of his introduction for the Television Academy chair, “The Menu” actor called himself “one of Hollywood’s Dei hires.” “The D is for diligence, the E is for excellence, the I is for imagination. Everyone in this room tonight has dedicated their lives to diligence, excellence and imagination,” Leguizamo said.
“For years, I didn’t complain about the limited roles my people were offered — the spicy sex pot, the Latin lover, the maid, the gang banger. The actor then highlighted some of the many Latinx characters over the years who had been played by non-Latinx actors, from Al Pacino playing the Cuban gangster Tony Montana in “Scarface” to Natalie Wood...

Jessica Gunning won her first Emmy on Sunday night for her breakout supporting turn in Baby Reindeer, Netflix’s buzzy limited series created by and starring Richard Gadd. The win is the first of the night for the show, which previously scored at the Creative Arts Emmys with statuettes recognizing its casting and editing.
Gunning saved the “biggest thanks” of her speech for Gadd, saying, “I’ve tried so many times to put into words what working on Baby Reindeer meant, and I fail every time — so I’m going to sing…” After breaking into her now-famous laugh, she continued, “No, imagine… I’ll keep it simple and just say thank you for trusting me to be your Martha. I will never, ever forget her, or you, or this. It really means a lot, so thank you, Reindeer, and thank you for this [award].”

Jessica Gunning has just won her first Emmy Award for her portrayal of Martha in Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” Gunning was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her work, one of 11 total nominations for the show.
After its April premiere, “Baby Reindeer” became one of the buzziest shows of the summer, catapulted into the Netflix Top 10 and earning instant awards speculation for Gunning, creator and star Richard Gadd, and the series itself. The show received nominations at the 76th Annual Emmy Awards for its casting, costuming, directing, editing, and music supervision, as well as in the performance categories for Gunning, Gadd, Tom Goodman-Hill, and Nava Mau (in Gunning’s category). The Creative Arts Emmys earlier in September awarded casting directors Nina Gold and Martin Ware as well as editors Peter H. Oliver and Benjamin Gerstein.

This particular tidbit even made her Big Little Lies co-star Laura Dern gasp. McMahan wanted the tea from Witherspoon, who asked, “Are we going to name names?”
“Umm, well, we might have a Hello Sunshine project cooking now, but I can’t say anything,” Witherspoon teased. “But it was cool, it was very cool.”

Baby Reindeer star Nava Mau emotionally celebrated her historic nomination on the Emmys red carpet.
While speaking with Laverne Cox for the E! broadcast of the 2024 Emmys red carpet, Cox was quick to get emotional as she embraced Mau with a hug.

Is “Shōgun” adding more Emmy hardware to its historic haul? Will “The Bear” break its own record? Those are the big questions heading into the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast live coast-to-coast from Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. Est/5 p.m Pst on ABC.
Hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, the main ceremony caps off a television year dominated by “Shōgun,” which already set a record for most Emmys by a drama series in a single year when it nearly swept the Creative Arts Emmys with 14. The FX drama, led by Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, will attempt to beef up its overall take when it competes with eight nominations in six top categories: drama series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, writing and directing. TheWrap’s awards guru Steve Pond boldly predicts “Shōgun” will go six for six on Sunday.

It’s television’s biggest night, and it’s posed to be a record-breaking one if contenders like “Shōgun” and “The Bear” continue expected sweeps.
The way of things was signaled at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys September 7 and 8 when “Shōgun” broke records grabbing 14 trophies, sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score. “Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance, and broke a record previously held by “Game of Thrones.”
Tonight, the FX drama is nominated for Best Drama series, among a slew of acting nominations where it looks to continue its stunning run.
On the comedy side, defending champ “The Bear,” also FX, will take on the third season of Max’s “Hacks,” among other contenders like “Abbott Elementary,” and...

“Baby Reindeer” was always conceived as a limited series and with the lawsuit now facing Netflix and the production, it’s probably best left that way. Speaking to IndieWire’s Vincent Perella on the red carpet of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Gadd said he was delighted that Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has come out in support of the comedian recently as he faces litigation from his former stalker.
“I didn’t know any of that. I’ve been up here. I’ve been in L.A. soaking in the atmosphere. I’ve been focusing on Emmys and all the exciting things happening in the city,” Gadd said upon being told about Sarandos’ recent comments in support of him. “So I honestly couldn’t tell you what’s happening in the outside world right now. But I love Ted. I met him a few times. He’s been great to me.

As the entertainment world prepares for Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards — coinciding with the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month — Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro extends his congratulations to Cris Abrego, who will make history as the first Latino Chair of the Television Academy to preside over the prestigious event.
“Tonight, Cris Abrego will make history as the first Latino to lead the Television Academy during television’s biggest night,” Castro tells Variety in an exclusive statement. “For decades, Cris has been a trailblazer and successful entrepreneur, shaping modern entertainment and championing underrepresented voices in Hollywood. As Latinos continue to push for greater representation in American media, tonight’s Emmy Awards represent a significant step forward. Congratulations to Cris and to all those who will follow in his footsteps.”

The second Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony of 2024 will catch television viewers back up in the awards cycle, at least, though certain shows have still outpaced the ceremony in terms of production. The Bear and Only Murders in the Building are two examples of shows that have since continued with more seasons, while older seasons (Season 2 of The Bear and Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building) are up for awards this weekend.
The 2024 Emmys will be handed out on Sunday, September 15 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with the broadcast airing live on ABC. Find more details about how to watch the 2024 Emmys below.

Good times were had and millions were raised at MPTF’s 18th annual Evening Before fundraiser.

TV’s biggest night is back for a second time this year, with the 76th Annual Emmy Awards back to their regularly-scheduled September ceremony. The impact of 2023’s Hollywood strikes is still rippling through the industry — including through the 75th Emmys, which took place earlier this year, in January — but the 2023-2024 Emmy nominees delivered another excellent year of television.
Despite the back-to-back ceremonies, the Emmys eligibility period holds strong; this ceremony will honor TV shows that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. That includes pre-strike premieres like “The Bear” Season 2 and spring 2024 hits like “Hacks” Season 3. This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running.
Along with extensive coverage on the nominees and odds for each category,...

“Baby Reindeer” star Nava Mau may be becoming a trans role model following the success of the Netflix drama and her Emmy nomination for her work on the show, but the actor isn’t ready to call herself an “activist.”
“I really shy away from that word because I think that people who are activists are often times involved with organizing and I deeply respect that work,” Mau told me Friday at the Television Academy’s Performer Nominee Celebration at The Wallis in Beverly Hills. “I tend to call myself an advocate.”
Mau’s nod for outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie makes her the first transgender woman nominated in that category.
She becomes emotional when talking about hearing from trans youth who thank her for her visibility. “It makes me cry a little bit,” Mau said.

The Variety and Chanel Female Filmmakers Dinner brought together an A-list lineup of Hollywood stars and creatives including Andrew Garfield, Elizabeth Olsen, “Nightbitch” director Marielle Heller (who attended this event mere moments before her film’s premiere), Danielle Deadwyler, Barry Keoghan and more for a vibrant night amidst the Toronto Film Festival. The vibe was electric, with drinks flowing, delicious food on hand and a spontaneous game of “Two Truths and a Lie” breaking out.
The event, which took place at Soho House Toronto, featured a cocktail hour downstairs before a three-course dinner on the second floor of the social club. Inside, the hotly anticipated “Saturday Night” film cast Cory Michael Smith, Lamorne Morris, Ella Hunt and Dylan O’Brien stopped in before their Tuesday night premiere. The film, a hot title at TIFF, is set within the chaotic 90 minutes before the first episode of “SNL” aired in 1975. The group mingled...
