The lawyer suing Netflix over Baby Reindeer has seized on a report in the UK alleging that the streaming giant pushed Richard Gadd into branding the series a true story.
The Sunday Times reported over the weekend that Netflix requested the opening line “this is a true story,” despite some misgivings from Gadd, who wrote and starred in the series.
Richard Roth, the attorney representing Fiona Harvey, the real-life Martha, said the accusation suggested that Netflix’s actions over Baby Reindeer went beyond negligence.
“This is far worse than negligence, this is intentional misconduct if they were told, ‘Don’t make it a true story.’ And they said it was true,” Roth told Piers Morgan Uncensored. “They are going to have to show that they have the facts to support their claim.”

A lot of the work of making a great TV show is done in the casting. Characters with compelling, dynamic relationships are ultimately a huge part of what keeps our attention on the big or the small screen. So, given that Emmy voting has just begun, IndieWire wanted to reach out to some of television’s top casting directors to ask them to nominate one outstanding work from this past year.
Not so unlike seeing 10 great, different actors give 10 great, different interpretations of a role and then somehow having to pick just one, the casting directors who responded to us were quick to point out how many shows have made revelatory casting choices in the last year. “Baby Reindeer,” “Eric,” “Only Murders In The Building,” “Shogun,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” all received warm praise in multiple email threads about our casting directors’ choices, and luckily, most of...

Lady Whistledown faced an unlikely adversary on Netflix last week.
Bridgerton Season 3, Part 2 went neck-and-neck with the French film Under Paris, about a scientist whose tasked with ridding the Seine of a bloodthirsty shark, for the most-watched title of the week.
Ultimately, the shark eked out a win on this one as Under Paris managed 28.7M views. That was good enough to boost it into Netflix’s non-English most popular film list at No. 5.
Shonda Rhimes’ Regency-era drama wasn’t too far off though, bringing in 28M views thanks to those final four episodes of the season. However, that wasn’t nearly the audience that the first half of the season saw in that same premiere window.
Still, one should expect to see this third season make an appearance on Netflix’s most popular list sometime soon. It’s already inching incredibly close to snatching the No. 10 spot from Baby Reindeer.

An industry debate about the blurred lines between reality and fiction was always going to take in the ongoing situation with Baby Reindeer – and so it was at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival.
A group of factual producers spoke in a Festival conference session entitled “New Narratives for Documentaries: The Blur Between Reality & Fiction.” The conversation soon turned to Richard Gadd’s Netflix series, which is the subject of a $170 million lawsuit in the U.S.
“It’s amazing for a guy who’s been trying to get his own breakthrough for years, he got it, it just happened in the wrong way,” said veteran British producer Steve Anderson. “It feels like one of those moments where the envelope has just been pushed too much.”
The legal team of Fiona Harvey, the woman identified as being the inspiration for the Martha character in Baby Reindeer, is claiming that the “biggest lie...

Last Thursday marked the beginning of the annual 11-day period during which members of the TV academy cast their ballots for the Primetime Emmy nominations. Since there are fewer candidates in practically every category compared to last year, there are also fewer nomination slots up for grabs. Indeed, performers eligible for half of the 16 main acting awards must now fight harder to officially compete for them.
Those who were immediately cut from Gold Derby’s predicted acting lineups once the ballots dropped were supporting players Allison Janney (“Palm Royale”), Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”), Holland Taylor (“The Morning Show”), and Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”), non-continuing program leads Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”) and Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”), and drama series guests Sharon Horgan (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”). Yang had broken into the comedy featured male lineup just a few hours earlier,...

Baby Reindeer (Netflix)
What makes this show addictive is also what makes it disturbing, devastating and occasionally funny: its brutal honesty. Richard Gadd’s account of stalking and abuse spares no one, least of all his semi-autobiographical stand-in. But it also finds empathy for imperfect victims and troubled perpetrators alike — the latter played by Jessica Gunning with ferocious commitment. — Angie Han
Extraordinary (Hulu)
In a TV landscape teeming with superpowered folks, this series stands out — and not just because its protagonist, Jen (Máiréad Tyers), is the rare adult in her universe without a special ability. Really a quarterlife coming-of-age comedy in genre packaging, the second season digs even deeper into its characters’ psyches to explore themes as relatable as sexuality and loss. — A.H.
Fantasmas (HBO)
A show that could only have come from Julio Torres, the surreal mind behind Los Espookys, Fantasmas follows a writer trying to avoid being evicted.

The appetite for drama based on real events seems insatiable, but a preliminary ruling that a British film defamed the original of one of its characters – along with legal action against Baby Reindeer – may give producers pause for thought
It’s enough to chill the blood of screenwriters, directors and producers everywhere – or at least provoke a wince of recognition, whether they are in UK legal jurisdiction or not. In a preliminary ruling, a British judge has ruled that the The Lost King, the film about the discovery in 2012 of Richard III’s remains in a Leicester car park, has a case to answer that it is defamatory of Richard Taylor, a former university official.
The Lost King covers the efforts spearheaded by Philippa Langley (played by Sally Hawkins) to uncover Richard III’s skeleton, and Lee Ingleby plays Taylor, the then deputy registrar of Leicester university. Taylor claims the...

The State of the Race
Not to focus too much attention on one show, but the number of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie nominations “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans” gets for the 2024 Emmys will be a good indicator of how much of a contender that show (which seems built for the category) is in the Limited Series categories overall.

Jessica Gunning remembers the first time she made someone laugh.
“It was in a classroom,” she told IndieWire, over breakfast in SoHo while making the rounds for Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” “I was just doing a scene in a drama class, and then everyone, for some reason, laughed, and I got such a buzz from that. I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s the best feeling ever.’”
Born and raised in Yorkshire, in Northern England, Gunning chased that feeling down to London to attend drama school, never disabused of the notion that she could and should be a professional performer.
“I’d always just thought I could be an actor, which is rare, but I just loved the thought of it,” she said.
Gunning has been hard at work for 17 years since then, appearing in short films, features, television, and more. “Baby Reindeer” is hardly a formulaic global smash...

The TV years are just flying by at this point. For some of us, it feels like only yesterday we were watching Succession take home precisely every award at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. For others, yesterday might as well have been the airing of the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones. And for some incomprehensibly ancient creatures, we … I mean they fondly recall watching the Lost finale in their college dorm. The point is that things move fast on television. If you don’t slow down for a minute, you might miss all of it.
So let’s slow down to appreciate the best TV has had to offer in 2024 so far. From stunning new miniseries dramas like FX’s Shōgun to unexpected animated delights like Disney+’s X-Men ‘97 to reliable comedies like Max’s Hacks, there was plenty to love this year. To be eligible, a show...

Baby Reindeer is now one of Netflix’s most popular shows of all time.
Officially the 10th most-watched program in the streamer’s history, Richard Gadd’s limited series sat in the top spot worldwide for a month before it was dethroned and accrued 56.5 million views within 26 days of its April 11 release. “It’s been an enormous hit around the world,” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said.
Audiences were gripped by the story of Donny, an amateur comedian played by Gadd, who, over the course of several years, is harassed, stalked and sent over 41,000 emails, 744 tweets, 100 pages of letters and 350 hours of voicemails by a woman he once pitied. In the program, Martha (played by Jessica Gunning) shows up at his gigs, sexually assaults him and threatens his family as his life slowly derails. He is also sexually abused by a top TV writer and grapples with prolonged drug use.

Steve Coogan’s 2022 film about the search for King Richard III’s remains was defamatory to a man portrayed by actor Lee Ingleby, a UK High Court judge has ruled.
Richard Taylor, a former employee at the University of Leicester, is suing the producers of The Lost King, including Coogan, his production company Baby Cow, and distributor Pathe.
Taylor was awarded a preliminary judgment in his favor on Friday, meaning his case can proceed to a full trial, during which Coogan, BBC Studios-owned Baby Cow, and Pathe will defend the portrayal.
Written by Coogan and Jeff Pope, The Lost King depicted Phillipa Langley’s (Sally Hawkins) search to find the controversial king’s skeleton under a car park in Leicester.
Taylor argued that he was painted as being “devious” in “manipulating the public presentation of information about the find, so as unjustly to conceal Philippa Langley’s true role,...

Ah, Emmy season. Does it ever end? The answer is a decisive “no” when it comes to 2024, considering we’ve already held one ceremony and are gamely preparing for a second. So many shows, so many artists, so many choices.
Fear not TV Academy voter. Yes, Emmy ballots are overwhelming. No, it’s not possible to lay discerning eyes on every candidate. But your trusty TV critic is here to help. At the cost of my friendships, physical health, and basic sanity, I’ve spent untold hours watching as much current television as humanly possible, from the highest achievements of imagination to the lowest embarrassments of our middling TV era. Now, I pass that experience onto you, via IndieWire’s 2024 Emmy Nominations Dream Ballot — a guide for voters (and reminder for casual viewers) as to what’s worth honoring among the thinning but still dense TV landscape.

Ever since “Shōgun” made the move to drama series categories at the Emmys, “Fargo” has enjoyed the lead in our racetrack odds for Best Limited Series based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. But another contender has emerged, and now “Fargo’s” lead doesn’t look so secure. “Baby Reindeer” is on the way up.
Inspired by real events in the life of writer-actor Richard Gadd, “Baby Reindeer” tells the story of a struggling comedian who becomes the target of an increasingly desperate stalker (Jessica Gunning). It’s now one of the top 10 most watched English-language Netflix programs of all time. And it’s a darling of TV journalists, scoring 88 on MetaCritic and cleaning up in the Television Critics Association nominations. So perhaps it’ll be like another recent Netflix limited series, “Beef,” which went from watercooler hit to awards juggernaut.

The webs of romance in Bridgerton easily captured the top spot among all streaming titles for the show’s return. Theatrical flop Madame Web, meanwhile, found a promising start to its streaming life.
Bridgerton drew 2.76 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States for the week of May 13-19. The first half of season three premiered on May 16, and Nielsen says those four episodes accounted for 70 percent of the total, or about 1.93 billion minutes — which would still have ranked No. 1 by a wide margin. The remaining 827 million minutes came from the first two seasons.
Madame Web — whose mom was in the Amazon researching spiders right before she died — premiered May 14 on Netflix and racked up 1.16 billion minutes of viewing for the week. That’s equivalent to about 10 million complete showings of the movie, which is part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe and was derided by both critics and audiences...

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F's new blood breaks down her Hollywood past and future.
“The world often feels like it’s in a chronic coma,” Taylour Paige tells Empire. “And without being too grandiose, I want to be a part of something which helps people to snap out of it.” As far as acting-career mission statements go, this is surely as novel as it is ambitious. But in the months to come, Paige may well live up to it, whether she’s going toe-to-toe with a comedy legend or playing a highly unconventional corruption-avenging hero.
First we’ll be seeing Paige as Eddie Murphy’s estranged daughter in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
Working alongside the legendary comedian left her totally starstruck, she says. “I grew up watching The Nutty Professor and Dr. Dolittle. It was like I knew him — it was surreal.” But that didn’t stop her...

This Emmys season was supposed to be a dud. The decidedly weak Drama and Comedy Series categories were supposed to be enough of an embarrassment to make the Television Academy reconsider allowing eight nominees for each. What a difference three months make. The Comedy Series category may not be all wrapped up, in a category switch the Drama Series field landed a likely nominee which would be a historically strong winner, and two late-arriving programs may upend the already insanely competitive Limited Series field.

With the start of Emmy nominations voting arriving on Thursday, campaigning has been happening everywhere, at least in and around Los Angeles.
In recent days, one could find top-tier contenders on FYC panels (Jon Stewart and the other hosts of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show flew out from New York for theirs) and roundtables (check out THR’s), at the Ross House in Mt. Olympus (even campaigning-averse Donald Glover of Mr. and Mrs. Smith showed up), at the races (Sebastian Maniscalco promoted Max’s Bookie at the Santa Anita track) and even on pizza boxes (ABC is pushing Abbott Elementary to consumers of Prime Pizza).
Many chose this moment to share positive news about their contender — for instance, Apple announced the renewal of Palm Royale for a second season. Others, curiously, elected this moment to drop bad news about their contender — HBO/Max announced the cancellation of Tokyo Vice,...

If P.E. was your favourite subject at school, then oh boy, are you in for a treat. We’ve reached the time of year when British television suddenly gets very P.E. There’s running and jumping, football and tennis, the Olympic Games… Competitions and tournaments abound, and all televised as an interruption to your usual programming.
For non-sports fans, of course, that means a TV drought approaches. Or, to see it as more glass-half-full, it’s an opportunity to catch up on stuff you missed from earlier in the year. Below is a list of picks of the best British TV series from the first half of 2024. The US TV list is coming, and the movies one is here. Feel free to add your own recommendations below!

British television personality Piers Morgan is known for being one of the most controversial celebrities of our time. And while his interviews are often sensationalistic, unprofessional, and unethical, he has a large base of followers and is highly popular, as well as influential in the media industry. Known for exploiting people’s vulnerabilities and sad stories, Morgan rarely reaches the headlines with a normal discussion. Recently, he was involved in the “Real Martha” affair associated with Netflix’s hit series Baby Reindeer, and now, we have decided to report on his recent interview with disgraced Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey, who opened up to Morgan in what will remain as one of the most bizarre interviews of 2024.
Just a quick reminder – Kevin Spacey has recently been cleared of all charges, managing to mingle out of his sexual harassment scandal without a single conviction. While some of his colleagues have publically backed...

Based on Richard Gadd’s autobiographical one-man show of the same name, Netflix’s Baby Reindeer is based on Gadd’s real-life experience of being stalked by a woman named Martha. The series has surpassed expectations to become one of Netflix’s most popular TV shows of all time, taking its place on the streaming service’s Top 10 list.
With a total of 84.5 million views since its release on April 11th, Baby Reindeer is sitting pretty at the #10 spot, which means that it has bumped the first season of The Witcher off the list entirely. Sorry, Geralt. The list tracks how many views a show gets within its first 91 days on Netflix, and as Baby Reindeer still has a month to go before it reaches that limit, it could very well jump up a few positions.

We’re not making this true story up: “Baby Reindeer” has officially booted “The Witcher” from Netflix’s Most Popular TV (English) list.
The Richard Gadd limited series has amassed 84.5 million views globally since its release on April 11. Season 1 of “The Witcher” snagged 83 million views over its first 91 days of availability, which is Netflix’s cutoff for the all-time Top 10 list. “Baby Reindeer” has about a month left, so expect it to climb higher in the ranks. “Bridgerton: Season 2,” “Stranger Things 3,” “Fool Me Once,” and “The Night Agent”: Donny and Martha are coming for you.
Yet “Baby Reindeer” is no longer making Netflix’s weekly Top 10. Just last week it spent its eighth week on the Top 10 weekly list, clocking in at No. 10, while “Bridgerton: Season 2” has spent a whopping 19 weeks in the Top 10 as the third season of “Bridgerton” has inspired a lot of rewatches.

After a runaway success when it debuted in April, “Baby Reindeer” has become Netflix’s No. 10 most popular English-language series of all time.
The streamer compiles this chart by measuring views accrued in each title’s first 91 days of streaming; “Baby Reindeer” has reached 84.5 million, knocking “The Witcher” off the list. Richard Gadd’s limited series could keep moving higher in the rankings, as it won’t hit the 91-day mark until July 10. The next title to beat is Season 2 of “Bridgerton,” which sits at No. 9 with 93.8 million views — though Season 3 of “Bridgerton” is also likely to join the rankings after its last four episodes drop on June 13.
The most-watched title of the June 3-9 viewing window was “Under Paris,” which debuted with 40.9 million views in its first week of availability. That makes it not only the most-watched Netflix film since “Damsel” hit 50.8 million views in the March 11-17 viewing window,...

‘Baby Reindeer’ Leaps Onto Netflix’s Most Popular Series List; ‘Under Paris’ Takes Streamer By Storm
It’s official — Baby Reindeer is one of Netflix’s most popular series of all time.
The thriller series has crept its way to No. 10 on the streamer’s all-time English-language TV series list after clocking 84.5 million views since its release April 11, bumping The Witcher Season 1 off the list.
And, there’s still time for it to keep moving on up. Baby Reindeer still has 30 days in its premiere window, which gives it an opening to secure an even higher spot, potentially rivaling Bridgerton Season 2 or Stranger Things 3. The most impressive aspect of Baby Reindeer‘s certified hit status is that it isn’t attached to any IP, like many of the series it sits among on the most popular list, and it relied on word-of-mouth for its growth trajectory.

“Baby Reindeer” breakout star Jessica Gunning could never have predicted the impact the British drama series would have, but she’s certain it’s making a difference for future stories and those who see themselves in the characters.
“It’s incredible to have such a universal reaction,” she tells Variety. “It shows that audiences are hungry for messy stories that aren’t black and white or neatly tied up with a happy ending. It’s more complicated than that, and people are ready to watch and handle it.”
The Netflix limited series has surged into the spotlight, capturing significant attention and cultural impact. Gunning has emerged as a potential frontrunner in the Emmy race for her stunning portrayal of the enigmatic stalker, Martha Scott.
In recent weeks, a Scottish woman claiming to be the inspiration for Richard Gadd’s hit series has sued the streamer, seeking at least $170 million in damages.

Since premiering on May 31 (the exact cutoff date for 76th Emmys eligibility), HBO’s “The Great Lillian Hall” has become an undeniably strong contender in this year’s wide-open Best TV Movie race. In the past week alone, its Gold Derby program category odds jumped from 40/1 to 18/1 while lead and supporting cast members Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates both moved closer to predicted nominee status.
“The Great Lillian Hall” has found some of its greatest support among our team of in-house editors, more than half of whom are officially on board with it and Lange being nominated. Bates – who held 100/1 general odds until last Thursday and now sits at 62/1 – is on track to at least crack said subgroup’s movie/limited supporting actress lineup very soon.
Our editors’ consensus picks have indeed changed quite a bit in the last week, with the most noticeable developments involving newly predicted winners Richard Gadd and Claire Foy.

Youthful Americans often keep subtitles on while watching British content, much to the puzzlement of older generations. Increasingly though, older viewers are also adopting this habit for a simple reason: they can’t quite catch what anyone is saying. If you’ve found yourself pausing during episodes of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, Peaky Blinders, or Bodkin to figure out what’s being said, rest assured you’re not alone. Netflix’s Kathy Rokni explains that the company’s in-house team of “subtitling experts and language managers” has been designed not only to enhance viewer experience but also to stay true to the filmmakers’ visions. X-men '97 Scores TCA Nomination For Outstanding New Program Alongside Shogun, Ripley & Baby Reindeer
The Television Critics Association announced their picks for the best shows of the 2023-2024 TV season on Monday, and in a pleasantly surprising development, Marvel Studios' recent Disney+ series, X-Men '97, picked up two significant nominations.
The animated revival scored nominations for Outstanding New Program and Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming.
Though X-Men '97 proved to be a big hit with fans and critics alike, it's rare that an animated series - and a superhero animated series at that - would receive any TCA recognition, especially outside of the Children's Programming category.
What are the mutant heroes' chances of picking up the win? Well, the show is up against some heavy hitters such as Shōgun, Baby Reindeer and Ripley, so, fittingly, they are the underdogs here.
Former showrunner Beau DeMayo shared the following post in response to the news.

“Feud: Bette and Joan” took the Emmys by storm in 2017, with the first season of the Ryan Murphy anthology show receiving rave reviews for its depiction of the rivalry between actresses Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange).
Season two will hope to match that Emmy success (more on that later) with its portrayal of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and his falling out with a group of New York high society socialites known as the Swans. Capote wrote a fictionalized account of the Swans’ dramatic lives, leading to the Swans vowing revenge for betraying their confidence.
The glossy show is typically gorgeous, scandalous, and theatrical while the performances are all top-drawer. Hollander dazzles in the lead role as Capote, which is no mean feat considering the late, great Philip Seymour-Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar for his turn as Capote in 2005’s “Capote”). For the second year in a row, three shows have topped the Television Critics Association nominations. “Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley” and “Shōgun” lead Monday’s nominations for the 40th annual awards with five bids each.
All three shows are up for Program of the Year, a category dominated by FX and Netflix. The former fielded three nominees with “Shōgun” “The Bear” and “Reservation Dogs,” while the latter is repped by “Baby Reindeer” and “Ripley.” Max’s “Hacks” is the sole non-fx and non-Netflix nominee.
Last year, “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and “The Bear” scored five nominations apiece. “Succession” and “The Bear” wound up with two wins each, with the former taking Program of the Year, but “The Last of Us” went 0-5.
After expanding to eight slots per category in 2021, TCA has reverted to six slots. No reason was given.
More curious, however, is the unprecedented double-dipping by three shows.

The Television Critics Association announced the nominees for the 2024 TCA Awards and, surprisingly, they come with some controversy. “Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley” and “Shogun” led all programs with five nominations each. “The Bear” earned four nominations while “Fargo” took three. That being said, both “Baby Reindeer” and “Fargo” earned noms for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries or Specials which is utterly head-scratching.

The summer solstice is still a couple weeks away, but awards season is in full bloom — the Television Critics Association just announced the nominees for its 40th annual awards, a milestone for the organization.
If you've been paying attention to the zeitgeist, you won't be surprised by the frontrunners. Fiona Harvey, a Scottish lawyer, has filed a $170 million lawsuit against Netflix and the creator of the hit series Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd.
The lawsuit, filed in a California court, alleges that the streaming giant and Gadd have engaged in a blatant act of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and violations of Harvey’s right of publicity.
According to the 34-page complaint, the series, which was marketed as a “true story,” has painted a false and damaging portrait of Harvey, depicting her as a “twice convicted stalker” who “sexually assaulted” Gadd. The lawsuit claims that Netflix and Gadd told these “lies” to over 50 million viewers worldwide, “because it was a better story than the truth, and better stories made money.”
The plaintiff is seeking a staggering amount in damages, including $50 million in actual damages, $50 million in compensatory damages for “mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life and loss of business,...

“Loot” and “Pose” star Michaela Jaé Rodriguez says while growing up, the Logo dramedy series “Noah’s Arc,” which followed the lives and relationships of four gay men in Los Angeles, was one of the first shows she saw that made her feel represented.
“There were so many people of color on that show,” Rodriguez told Variety. “They did highlight a lot of trans women. It wasn’t as prominent, but the girls were there. I saw a whole encompassing story around all of the Lgbtqia+ community in that show and it resonated with me, it still resonates with me today.”
Rodriguez was honored with the Vanguard Award Friday night at the Critics Choice Association’s inaugural Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television in Los Angeles. The celebration honored achievements from LGBTQ+ creators and talent within the entertainment industry, both in front of and behind the camera.
