I am a sucker for a masked hero, a secret identity or just a good swordsman.

1. The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982 TV Movie)

Not Rated | 142 min | Action, Drama, Romance

Paris, 1792: After France becomes a republic, aristocrats are guillotined. The English Sir Percy tries to save as many as he can as The Scarlet Pimpernel in disguises.

Director: Clive Donner | Stars: Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour, Ian McKellen, James Villiers

Votes: 5,152

Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews are great in this movie (made for TV). This is the most romantic of the Pimpernel movies, in my opinion.

2. The Scarlet Pimpernel (1999–2000)

TV-14 | 540 min | Adventure, Drama

During the turmoil of the French Revolution, English aristocrat Percy Blakeney, often aided by his League of friends, secretly undertakes various daring missions as the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Stars: Richard E. Grant, Ronan Vibert, Gerard Murphy, Ron Donachie

Votes: 1,256

This Scarlet Pimpernel with Richard E. Grant were done as a series. I bought a set in the US with under 300 minutes and then found another set that never got to the US, which I ordered from Amazon in the UK. I got the whole complete set of 600 minutes which included the first set I already had. It was region free but is in PAL format. Fine for me since my player will do PAL.

I love this series but it is more action than romance.

3. Smallville (2001–2017)

TV-PG | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

A young Clark Kent struggles to find his place in the world as he learns to harness his alien powers for good and deals with the typical troubles of teenage life in Smallville, Kansas.

Stars: Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Allison Mack, Kristin Kreuk

Votes: 138,007

I watched all 10 seasons of Smallville just as season 10 was ending and I love this show. I was a huge Superman comic book fan as a kid and this series did a great job depicting what Clark Kent may have been like growing up in Kansas on a farm and learning to become Superman. There were some story lines I didn't care much for--like Lana Lang and the girls getting possessed by witches or Lana becoming a vampire. Other story lines seemed to be longer than necessary, but on the whole, this is a fun and exciting show to watch. There are over 200 episodes, so it is very satisfying.

4. Captain Blood (1935)

Passed | 119 min | Action, Adventure, History

89 Metascore

After treating a Monmouth rebel against King James II in 1680s England, a young Irish doctor is exiled as a slave to Jamaica where he captures a Spanish galleon and becomes the most feared pirate of the Caribbean.

Director: Michael Curtiz | Stars: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Lionel Atwill, Basil Rathbone

Votes: 16,093 | Gross: $2.96M

This is one of my all-time favorite swashbuckling stories. I wish Hollywood would do a remake with modern techniques, but making sure they don't mess up the story. I could picture a young Colin Farrell or Orlando Bloom as Captain Blood.

5. The Mask of Zorro (1998)

PG-13 | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

62 Metascore

A young thief seeking revenge for his brother's death is trained by the once-great, aging Zorro, who is pursuing his own vengeance.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, José María de Tavira

Votes: 197,683 | Gross: $94.10M

Zorro is one of my all-time favorite heroes and Anthonio Banderas wasn't bad in the role. He isn't the original Zorro, but is trained by the original to take over.

6. The Legend of Zorro (2005)

PG | 129 min | Action, Adventure, Romance

47 Metascore

Despite trying to keep his swashbuckling to a minimum, a threat to California's pending statehood causes the adventure-loving Don Alejandro de la Vega and his wife, Elena, to take action.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Rufus Sewell, Alberto Reyes

Votes: 107,599 | Gross: $46.46M

This is a sequel to The Mask of Zorro and it is full of romance and action with a very evil bad guy.

7. Zorro (1957–1959)

TV-G | 30 min | Adventure, Family, Western

Don Diego de la Vega opposes the corrupt tyrants of Spanish California as the masked swordsman, Zorro.

Stars: Guy Williams, Gene Sheldon, Henry Calvin, Don Diamond

Votes: 4,153

Disney produced the best Zorro there ever was with Guy Williams as Diego/Zorro. If you can get your hands on this Disney Treasure with 82 episodes, you will love it.

8. The Black Swan (1942)

Approved | 87 min | Adventure, Drama

An ex-pirate contends with rowdy buccaneers and a love/hate relationship with an aristocratic woman who's tougher than she seems.

Director: Henry King | Stars: Tyrone Power, Maureen O'Hara, Laird Cregar, Thomas Mitchell

Votes: 5,085 | Gross: $1.01M

This is another movie that would be nice to get a modern remake of. It still is enjoyable with Tyrone Power as the swashbuckling hero who uses his wits and skills to save Maureen O'Hara from pirates who attack their ship.

9. Crossed Swords (1977)

PG | 108 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Poor boy Tom Canty and Edward, Prince of Wales exchange identities, but events force the pair to experience each other's lives as well.

Director: Richard Fleischer | Stars: Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch, Mark Lester, Ernest Borgnine

Votes: 2,113

This movie (made for TV) is based on The Prince and the Pauper. I like it because of the swordplay and it has some humor.

10. The Magical World of Disney (1954–1997)
Episode: The Prince and the Pauper: The Pauper King (1962)

Unrated | 50 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

In London of 1537, two boys resembling each other meet accidentally and exchange "roles" for a short while.

Director: Don Chaffey | Stars: Guy Williams, Laurence Naismith, Donald Houston, Sean Scully

Votes: 220

Disney had a 3-part movie on TV that starred Guy Williams as Miles Hendon. I am not sure this link is to the same movie but the time frame is about right. The only place I could find to see this version starring Guy Williams was to rent it on Amazon's Unbox. The quality of the video was poor but I still enjoyed it. I am hoping Disney will come out with a better quality copy for sale one of these days.

11. Robin Hood (2010)

PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

53 Metascore

In twelfth-century England, Robin Longstride and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen, Max von Sydow

Votes: 283,075 | Gross: $105.27M

Robin Hood is a favorite story and who doesn't like Russell Crowe?

12. The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

PG | 102 min | Action, Adventure, Romance

97 Metascore

When Prince John and the Norman Lords begin oppressing the Saxon masses in King Richard's absence in 1190s England, a Saxon lord fights back as the outlaw leader of a resistance movement.

Directors: Michael Curtiz, William Keighley | Stars: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains

Votes: 54,473 | Gross: $3.98M

When I first saw this movie with Errol Flynn, I loved it. It is still pretty good now that I am older, but I do have to admit those green tights are kind of ridiculous.

13. Robin Hood (1984–1986)

TV-PG | 60 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy

A forest mystical being appoints two men in succession as the legendary outlaw defender of the oppressed.

Stars: Peter Llewellyn Williams, Ray Winstone, Mark Ryan, Clive Mantle

Votes: 4,970

I enjoyed this British TV series of Robin Hood although they killed him off at the end of season one. Then they replaced him with another guy in season two--they didn't bring him back to life but just had a new leader take over.

These Horatio Hornblower movies are part of a series starring Ioan Gruffudd and they are so good you can watch them over and over.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane

Votes: 811,628 | Gross: $291.05M

This remake of Superman is better than most I have seen. There are quite a few changes to the old story we are used to, yet the hero is still a man who is morally above most people. The fact that Superman has super powers, he could become a tyrant/dictator, but instead he is a protector of mankind.
