1. Gone with the Wind (1939)

Passed | 238 min | Drama, Romance, War

97 Metascore

A sheltered and manipulative Southern belle and a roguish profiteer face off in a turbulent romance as the society around them crumbles with the end of slavery and is rebuilt during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.

Directors: Victor Fleming, George Cukor, Sam Wood | Stars: Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Thomas Mitchell, Barbara O'Neil

Votes: 334,141 | Gross: $198.68M

Why is this movie the best movie of all movies? Its epic! Very well played and has an amazing cast: Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard and of course Olivia DeHavilland and all those supporting Cast. On the restored blu-Ray you can see every fine detail of the production: Art Direction/Building/Decors, the costumes (and their details), the wonderful Matte-Paintings (ok a few effects are not quite perfect but it wasn't other possible back in 1938/39.) I'm sure, you don't relealizing each Matte-Painting - its just to perfect! This is the movie of the movies and the most successful (inflation!!!) movie of all the time.

2. Ben-Hur (1959)

G | 212 min | Adventure, Drama

90 Metascore

After a Jewish prince is betrayed and sent into slavery by a Roman friend in 1st-century Jerusalem, he regains his freedom and comes back for revenge.

Director: William Wyler | Stars: Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Stephen Boyd, Haya Harareet

Votes: 253,551 | Gross: $74.70M

Another Epic!!! The Camerawork, Costumes, Building/Decors, Actors. - A Masterpiece.

3. Cleopatra (1963)

G | 192 min | Biography, Drama, History

60 Metascore

Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt experiences both triumph and tragedy as she attempts to resist the imperial ambitions of Rome.

Directors: Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Rouben Mamoulian | Stars: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, Pamela Brown

Votes: 37,392 | Gross: $57.78M

3rd Epic in my favorite List and I think, much underrated! The production itself was almost a desaster and it was flop. But I think the audience wasn't really ready for this movie. In my mind, Elizabeth Taylor acting is fantastic, and also Richard Burton und Rex Harrison are amazing and don't forget all those great (partial STage-) actors who really can acting. The art direction again is together with "GWTW" and "Ben Hur" the best I ever have seen. Do we get today such "big" things? No! And "Cleopatra's" Entrance is a MASTERPIECE.

4. Peyton Place (1957)

Approved | 157 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

63 Metascore

A peaceful New England town hides secrets and scandals.

Director: Mark Robson | Stars: Lana Turner, Lee Philips, Lloyd Nolan, Arthur Kennedy

Votes: 6,610 | Gross: $25.60M

Fox's "Peyton Place" about a fictional small city, adapted by successful novel is tell a story about the people and their secrets. This movie was made when a production/Hayes-Code was still present. Its about rape, closet homosexuallety.... Absolutely great actors par exellence!!!!

5. The Good Earth (1937)

Passed | 138 min | Drama, Romance

Although married Chinese farmers Wang and O-Lan initially experience success, their lives are complicated by declining fortunes and lean times, as well as the arrival of the beautiful young Lotus.

Directors: Sidney Franklin, Victor Fleming, Gustav Machatý, Sam Wood | Stars: Paul Muni, Luise Rainer, Walter Connolly, Tilly Losch

Votes: 5,408

"The Good Earth" and his female leading german actress is in the german speaking part unknow or complettely forgotten (but in June 2012 she's still living) and was never shown on TV in the past 30 years. Its about a chinese woman, grew up as girl in a woman house and solt / married to a farmer. Together with "Peyton Place", the only difference of both movie is the black & white/ color and 4:3 Fullscreen/ Cinemascope. Of course, the stories are different and haven't do something together. But both are very well played. Luise Rainer is really fantastic (even she isn't asian) and also Paul Muni who was Austrian born (now Hungary). Its really a must seen it and deserve a restoration for a Blu-Ray release.

6. Titanic (1997)

PG-13 | 194 min | Drama, Romance

75 Metascore

A seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.

Director: James Cameron | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates

Votes: 1,279,541 | Gross: $659.33M

Ok, some people call this movie a worst movie of all the time. 90 Minutes Love Story and then 90 minutes Action/Drama. Together with "GWTW" I would call it as the greatest Love Story in the MOvie history. Again, the art direction, indoors and costumes are more or less very authentic re-made. The old Rose was played by Gloria Stuart who was once the love interest of the "The Invisible Man" in 1933. Tricia O'Neil ("Star trek", "Dynasty") who played a small part told me (in person) nearly about 30 min about her experience and that the whole acting-cast took lessons how they did eat/drink, speak in the the upper-class in the year 1912 and how big the sound-stages had been. - so a special memory for me for a movie which won 11 academy awards -

7. The Miracle Worker (1962)

Approved | 106 min | Biography, Drama

83 Metascore

The story of Anne Sullivan's struggle to teach the blind and deaf Helen Keller how to communicate.

Director: Arthur Penn | Stars: Anne Bancroft, Patty Duke, Victor Jory, Inga Swenson

Votes: 20,494 | Gross: $5.45M

Do we need all the time non-stop action? Young people today maybe. But this one movie, filmed 50 years ago, based on a real event is just amazing. A few actors only are in this movie and only a few locations are used and Patty Duke is great. Its a heartbreaking and emotional movie! Its a must seen it.

8. Wings (1927)

PG-13 | 144 min | Drama, Romance, War

78 Metascore

Two young men, one rich, one middle class, who are in love with the same woman, become fighter pilots in World War I.

Directors: William A. Wellman, Harry d'Abbadie d'Arrast | Stars: Clara Bow, Charles 'Buddy' Rogers, Richard Arlen, Jobyna Ralston

Votes: 14,529 | Gross: $6.59M

Long believed to be lost and discovered again: was the first movie and for long time (until 2012) the only silent movie which won a academy award for the best movie. And yes..., its a great one. The actors was flying themself the planes (incredible) and also started/stopped the cameras in the air!!!!! Today, we're getting flying scenes filmed on the front of a blue or green screen. Here, they're real filmed!!!! This movie is about a friendship which is was much more - we see on of the first (when not the very first) male-to-male kiss.
