Taro and Jiro (probably Max and Maya in Eight Below (2006)). This story has been told many times in the movies - the last of them being a fictionalized "Based on" Americanized version by The Walt Disney company. The first two are Antarctica (1983) (in English, "Antartica"), and Antarctica (1983).
The 1957 - 58 Japanese Antarctic expedition team, three scientists, geologist Ushioda, meteorologist Ochi, and Dr. Ozawa, and 15 sled dogs (or as some call them now "Snow Dogs") left Syowa ("Showa") Station in East Ongul Island (Lat. 69°00' S; Long. 39°35' E) on a 500 mile trek to Mount Batnnutan. Both Ushioda and Ochi form a deep family bond with the dogs. On the way back from the mountain, they run into bad weather that force them to release Tara and Jiro to have them go for help. The dogs reach the base and bring back a rescue team. When the whole team finally reaches the base, the weather had detonated so much that the whole base had to be abandoned for the Antarctic winter months. However, they had to abandon the 15 dogs at the based (not willingly at all). Most of the rest of the films deal with the speculation of how the abandoned dogs had to survive the Antarctic winter and how both Ushioda and Ochi both were heartsick and how they tried to bring the rest of the family (aka, the dogs) home from Antarctica. Sadly only two of the dogs survived - Taro and Jiro.
In the Disney film, the dog names were changed to Max, Maya, Old Jack, Shorty, Shadow, Truman, Dewey, and Buck. I'm sorry that I had to use a photo from "Eight Below" but there is no picture from original pictures that show all the dogs except this one which shows only two dogs (probably Taro and Jiro) picture of two dogs.
