Editors' Picks: Our Favorite Things From the Week of April 227 of 10
Pioneering Filmmaker of the Week
We were delighted to attend a screening of Little Annie Rooney, a movie produced by and starring filmmaking pioneer Mary Pickford. She was a co-founder of the original United Artists (along with Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and D.W. Griffith), whose purpose was to support filmmakers so they weren't as dependent on commercial studios, and the founder of the Motion Picture Relief Fund, an a financial-assistance organization for actors. Her influence continues to be felt throughout the industry. Lucky for us, she was advised early on to seed a foundation to help preserve her work, and the crystal-clear restored print of Little Annie Rooney is just one of the many projects the Mary Pickford Foundation has supported over the years.
