Ned and Peter Parker's Friendship in Spider-Man: Homecoming
There were a handful of noteworthy superhero movies this year, including Patty Jenkins' much-needed modern reimagining of Wonder Woman and Taika Waititi's from-the-hip comedic treatment of Thor and Hulk. But Spider-Man: Homecoming was the one that mattered the most to me, mainly because it was a smart, forthright, and refreshing high-school comedy underneath a superhero's mask. Like Marty McFly, a character that Tom Holland says influenced his performance, Peter Parker struggles with how to wield his own newfound power and where he fits into the universe, in addition to where to sit during lunch. And helping him to navigate the social battlefield that is a high-school cafeteria? That's Ned (Jacob Batalon), who in his own non-superhero way (and from his spot in the chair) keeps Spider-Man grounded and mindful that saving Queens and the rest of the city from evil isn't nearly as hard as being a teenager.
