The Last Supper in "Feud"
I can't stop thinking about Jessica Lange's portrayal of Joan Crawford in "Feud," mainly because Lange's interpretation of the frequently misunderstood and entirely complex screen legend is so Shakespearean in scope. The Crawford we see in "Feud" is completely tragic: She can't help herself, knowing too well her own shortcomings and weaknesses but lacking the patience and self-control to curb her basest instincts. The season finale provided an inventive and satisfying conclusion to the troubled Hollywood icon's life and career. In an imagined party, Crawford hallucinates a final meeting with figures from her up-and-down-career, including rival Bette Davis herself. Over some smokes and a few drinks, Lange's Crawford makes peace with her frequent combatant Davis. But more importantly, she comes to terms with her own failings, like it's her own professional and personal moral reckoning. Accepting your own imperfections never seemed so elegant.
