Elisa and Giles' Next-Door-Neighbor Friendship in The Shape of Water
If only we all had next-door neighbors the likes of which Sally Hawkins and Richard Jenkins play in Guillermo del Toro's charming fable about love and longing and loneliness. Both Elisa and Giles are incomplete, trapped in the predictable patterns of their lives, but offer what they can to each other, even though both know they can't ultimately provide what the other really needs. There's something satisfying, then, about Giles' selflessness at movie's end, even despite his own sadness over his own status in life. Here, loneliness breeds generosity and love, and both Jenkins and Hawkins shine through the dimly lit final sequences.
