Favorite Films of 2015 (in order)

by krayziewill | created - 27 Dec 2015 | updated - 03 Jan 2016 | Public

Admittedly 2015 was more of a TV series year for me, but still saw enough high quality films to warrant this list. This is based on the US release of these films.

1. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)

PG-13 | 138 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

80 Metascore

As a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson

Votes: 973,358 | Gross: $936.66M

With the insane amount of hype, I was hoping this film would deliver and it came through in many many ways. The obvious nostalgic tribute, ENJOYABLE new characters, Han-Chewie dialogue, mysterious baddie (Snoke), and the just plain fun experience of returning to a galaxy far far away are some of the countless reasons I've already seen this 3 times since the release.

2. Jurassic World (2015)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

59 Metascore

A new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.

Director: Colin Trevorrow | Stars: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Judy Greer

Votes: 679,056 | Gross: $652.27M

If I could label these correctly, I would probably go 1a & 1b with these being two of my favorite franchises. Jurassic Park still stands as my favorite film of all time, and I felt Trevorrow did a tremendous job of (finally) creating a worthy sequel. Jurassic World and Episode VII were the only films this year that truly gave me the childlike awe and fun of experiencing the film.

3. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

R | 120 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

90 Metascore

In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.

Director: George Miller | Stars: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz

Votes: 1,085,286 | Gross: $154.06M

You could argue this film to the top of a lot of 2015 lists. George Miller returns to his old stomping groups and delivers a visual masterpiece. The epitome of a popcorn classic.

4. The Martian (2015)

PG-13 | 144 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

80 Metascore

An astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead, and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive and can survive until a potential rescue.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara

Votes: 924,377 | Gross: $228.43M

Also one of my favorite reads of the year. The film (for the most part) lived up to the story written by Andy Weir. The strength of the book (and film) is the character of Mark Watney who defies death many times with great sarcastic wit mixed with scientific problem solving. The film gives decent depth and fills in gaps with other characters.

5. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

PG-13 | 105 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

74 Metascore

High schooler Greg, who spends most of his time making parodies of classic movies with his co-worker Earl, finds his outlook forever altered after befriending a classmate who has just been diagnosed with cancer.

Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon | Stars: Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke, Nick Offerman

Votes: 138,236 | Gross: $6.74M

Not your typical "coming of age" film. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl tackles the subject of the big D (death, for all you perverts out there) with great charm and humor. The film has a great cast especially Thomas Mann who handles the self deprecating lead role to perfection. Greg and Earl's "Be Kind Rewind" style of film-making is a lot of fun to watch. You're kind of excited to see what film they'll parody next. This should go unsaid but any scene with Nick Offerman is just great.

6. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

R | 86 min | Comedy, Horror

76 Metascore

Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are struggling with the mundane aspects of modern life, like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.

Directors: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi | Stars: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Jonny Brugh

Votes: 200,096 | Gross: $3.33M

I don't think I had seen a good mockumentary since Christopher Guest was regularly making them. Definitely the most I laughed in a theater in 2015. Jermaine Clement simply needs more starring work, he's always hilariosu. The other two lead vampires were also great, not to mention the scene stealing moments from Rhys Darby as the wolf leader.

7. The Revenant (I) (2015)

R | 156 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

76 Metascore

A frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.

Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleeson

Votes: 873,743 | Gross: $183.64M

Great film. The bear attack scene will stick with for days. Iñárritu does a marvelous job visually once again. He's pretty amazing at taking a realistic situation and giving it a surreal look. I don't know if this will actually be the year for DiCaprio, but once again it would be well deserved if he notched it. The rest of the cast are fantastic as well (Hardy, Gleeson, Poulter especially).

8. Ant-Man (2015)

PG-13 | 117 min | Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, pull off a plan that will save the world.

Director: Peyton Reed | Stars: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Evangeline Lilly

Votes: 721,644 | Gross: $180.20M

The old saying "now we're cooking with oil" comes to mind with the roll that Marvel Studios in on. Ant-Man, the often neglected Avenger throughout the years, becomes a much enjoyable comedic-action romp. The feeling I had after viewing this was very similar (to a slightly lesser degree) to the one I had after seeing Guardians for the first time. The filmmakers wisely taking a somewhat ridiculous as well as obscure character concept and giving it the needed comedic touch. Rudd was a perfect choice for the lead role and was probably a huge part of the reason that Edgar Wright's absence wasn't felt as strongly as many feared. Definitely in my Marvel top 5 (for the moment).

9. Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Not Rated | 132 min | Drama, Horror, Western

72 Metascore

In the dying days of the old west, an elderly sheriff and his posse set out to rescue their town's doctor from cannibalistic cave dwellers.

Director: S. Craig Zahler | Stars: Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins

Votes: 117,842

At least to my recollection, I don't recall ever seeing or hearing of Western/horror combo film (at least one not produced the Asylum). At times, it has the necessary Western slow pace coupled with great dialogue from a fantastic cast. The scenes involving the cannibalistic group are quite horrifying and heart-pounding. It also has great action and effects for such a small budget film. One of the most unique films of 2015.

10. Inside Out (I) (2015)

PG | 95 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

94 Metascore

After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.

Directors: Pete Docter, Ronnie Del Carmen | Stars: Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling

Votes: 784,685 | Gross: $356.46M

Sadness: the biggest hero of 2015? You might think so after seeing this moving Pixar flick. The movie that gives personalities to emotions will definitely tug at yours. I just wish my imaginary friend was as cool as Bing Bong.

11. The Gift (VI) (2015)

R | 108 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

77 Metascore

A married couple, Simon and Robyn, run into Gordo, an old classmate. Things take a turn when Gordo begins to drop in unannounced at their house and inundates them with mysterious gifts.

Director: Joel Edgerton | Stars: Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, Joel Edgerton, Allison Tolman

Votes: 171,993 | Gross: $43.77M

This movie in a lot of ways is an extreme version of the old cliche "what goes around, comes around." Bateman and Edgerton play their roles to perfection, and honestly you're not sure who to root for.

12. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

56 Metascore

In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.

Director: Guy Ritchie | Stars: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki

Votes: 332,352 | Gross: $45.45M

Definitely one of the more underrated movies of 2015. This moves a stylish fast pace and the dialogue between the leads is pretty great. Bold move by Ritchie in making a good film out of remake from an original TV show most people either forgot about or had no idea it existed in the first place.

13. Trainwreck (2015)

R | 125 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

75 Metascore

Having thought that monogamy was never possible, a commitment-phobic career woman may have to face her fears when she meets a good guy.

Director: Judd Apatow | Stars: Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn

Votes: 142,718 | Gross: $110.21M

I hadn't seen much involving Amy Schumer, but VERY glad I saw this. She is a wrecking ball of comedy and completely owns this role. Fun to see Hader in the rare "straight man" role opposite of her. They play off of each other very well. Also surprising gems from supporting actors of Lebron James and John Cena. Both were hilarious actually, and it's strange just typing that.

14. The Visit (I) (2015)

PG-13 | 94 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

55 Metascore

Two siblings become increasingly frightened by their grandparents' disturbing behavior while visiting them on vacation.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie

Votes: 151,306 | Gross: $65.21M

As a huge fan of M. Night Shyamalan (liked Sixth Sense through the Village started to phase out after Lady in Water), was glad to see strong effort from him after a series of duds. The handheld camera technique helps in developing the story from the kids' point of view. Kudos to the two actors playing the grandparents, terrifying.

15. Faults (2014)

Not Rated | 89 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

70 Metascore

A cult deprogrammer is hired to help a couple whose daughter is under the influence of a mysterious cult.

Director: Riley Stearns | Stars: Leland Orser, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Ellis, Jon Gries

Votes: 10,805

Deeply disturbing. Best two words I could use to describe this indie horror films that portrays the world of religious cults like nothing I've seen. It's hard to describe much more about this film without getting spoilery so just see it ... now!

16. Paddington (2014)

PG | 95 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

77 Metascore

A young Peruvian bear travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he meets the kindly Brown family, who offer him a temporary haven.

Director: Paul King | Stars: Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent

Votes: 133,473 | Gross: $76.27M

17. Kung Fury (2015)

TV-14 | 31 min | Short, Action, Comedy

In 1985, Kung Fury, the toughest martial artist cop in Miami, goes back in time to kill the worst criminal of all time - Kung Führer, a.k.a. Adolf Hitler.

Director: David Sandberg | Stars: David Sandberg, Jorma Taccone, Steven Chew, Leopold Nilsson

Votes: 62,410

Not a feature film like the rest, but utterly fantastic in everything a throwback to the 1980s should be. Homage to all the the Van Damme, Seagal, Chuck Norris, etc movies you could think of with the cheesy effects, corny one liners, and huge plot gaps. Not to mention a viking lady riding a frickin dinosaur and Triceracop!

18. Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made (2015)

Not Rated | 106 min | Documentary

70 Metascore

A documentary of the story behind Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation (1989).

Directors: Jeremy Coon, Tim Skousen | Stars: Chris Strompolos, Eric Zala, Jayson Lamb, John Rhys-Davies

Votes: 2,298

Saw this on a whim at a local film fest and was blown away. Surprisingly emotional tale of filmmakers who started making a shot for shot remake of Raiders back when they were kids and carried that passion to adulthood.

19. Man Up (I) (2015)

R | 88 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

69 Metascore

A single woman takes the place of a stranger's blind date and finds the perfect man for her.

Director: Ben Palmer | Stars: Lake Bell, Rory Kinnear, Ken Stott, Harriet Walter

Votes: 56,409

I don't normally seek out romantic comedies, but I tend to flock to anything with Simon Pegg's name on it. He's hilarious as usual, and Lake Bell really shines (while mostly pulling off the British accent).
