Exhibits the hallmarks of a tragedy. Still an excellent horror film.
2. The Collector (I) (2009)

Desperate to repay his debt to his ex-wife, an ex-con plots a heist at his new employer's country home, unaware that a second criminal has also targeted the property, and rigged it with a series of deadly traps.

Grossly underrated. This film has no right to be this good considering who made it. A great Cat-and-Mouse type film.
3. The Man Who Laughs (1928)

An excellent silent film and, in a way, a tragedy of the highest caliber.
4. Vampyr (1932)

A drifter obsessed with the supernatural stumbles upon an inn where a severely ill adolescent girl is slowly becoming a vampire.
A horror film with a dream-like quality. Dreyer was a master of creating horror and suspense without violence.
5. Come and See (1985)

After finding an old rifle, a young boy joins the Soviet resistance movement against ruthless German forces and experiences the horrors of World War II.
A brutal, unflinching representation of war. Graphic, disturbing, brilliant. Should be considered as one of the greatest war films ever made.

The classic horror film. Carpenter's masterpiece still manages to frighten thanks to a brilliant score along with equally brilliant cinematography.

Horrific and deeply distressing. Polanski is an undisputed expert at horror.

A little-known horror film with an excellent score. A great home-invasion film.

13. Berberian Sound Studio (2012)

A sound engineer's work for an Italian horror studio becomes a terrifying case of life imitating art.
An excellent mix of audio and visual horror. Fans of Mario Bava and Dario Argento will enjoy.

Polanski makes an excellent claustrophobic horror film.

A startlingly original horror film I saw at the New Hampshire Film Festival. Go and see immediately when it comes out in February 2016.

A black comedy, up until the last 20 minutes. That's when the horror comes in. The music and setting perfectly match the devastating fear the character feels.

Bucolic scenes from the outskirts of Paris are contrasted with stark footage from slaughterhouses.
The most horrifying documentary ever made. Shot with such honesty and beauty. A must see
