  • It is always a struggle to define why Koreeda movies are so important to me. I even avoid talking about it to people because I can't word it correctly, so I end up making his work sound dull and ordinary...I suppose that isn't untrue but there's so much more. It's a poem that was written for me. How can it be so foreign and feel so personal, a generic thing to say about foreign films but Koreeda makes me feel that way more than anyone.
  • And no one films children better.
  • He respects them and gives them time to play and improvise until they effortlessly turn into a combination of the character and themselves. It lets the children shine and carry the film with apparent ease.
  • A master of pure, touching, soulful relationships in the midst of startlingly bleak surroundings.

  • My recommendation, he seemed to think it was funny
  • It was the first time I'd seen it since watching it with Sarah Wilkey in her apartment in Cedar City
  • I was worried I had built it up in my mind over the years but it held up. Great cynical Hollywood jokes and the banter between Veronica Lake's and Joel McCrea's characters are luckily just as I remembered. It has been a nice memory to see her laughing really hard so I'm relieved it is still funny to me

Votes: 204,046 | Gross: $71.50M

6 April 2019

  • Home, Hulu, Israel
  • 2nd part of the double feature I made for Israel. He hadn't seen either of them and approved of both.
  • Israel told me about a complicated and unpleasant thing going on with an ex, he admitted to being borderline verbally abusive and absolutely emotionally abusive, by way of manipulating his bf/gf (she thinks of herself as half man/half woman) into sex by becoming difficult and angry if she won't have sex with him. A year or 2 after they broke up she addressed it with him and he responded by hanging up and blocking her number. That mistake led her to publicly tell her friends, leading to many of his friends to turn on him. So he is homeless now. After the movies he asks if he can sleep on the couch and I let him, even though he is literally the stinkiest person I've ever known, that has been true for a few years now but he's never slept on my couch. He needs a friend so I won't turn my back on him but I also won't let his toxic nature influence my life, 1 night was all I could do.
  • Anyhoo...Sideways is still hilarious and full of heart after 12 viewings, like any excellent comedy I noticed a few new jokes this time
  • Miles teeters on complete collapse the entire film, the anguish and self-sabotage build until the final 5 minutes
  • One of the great films about food, especially wine of course. But the way Payne writes about all the facets of wine is spiritual, he acknowledges the classic tropes but is able to ditch them and speak with a lot of soul

13 April 2019

  • Home, Redbox Bluray, Ali
  • hard to imagine these 2 guys being this unfunny, but it happened.
  • It has been very hard to find a copy of it since it came out, no streams legal or otherwise. Now I know why. It's like their goal was to set the bar for Sherlock films or parodies or references. "Nothing can possibly get worse than this, we'll be legends for all the wrong reasons." But it was way too poop-based and laughlessly crass, and not zany or creative enough to remember a single scene, much less live on as a cult trash-hit.

20 April 2019

  • Home, Redbox, Ali
  • I need to stop acknowledging movies that are unanimously praised. They are pretty much always terrible and formulaic. I guess 'formula' connotes 'always successful' so it would always be essentially unoriginal because they are striving for the familiar.
  • McAvoy did all he could and committed so much that I was able to finish it.
  • THE DIALOGUE....oh my god. The teenage girls' lines were outlandishly dated and clearly written by an old man that failed to look through their eyes, an important job for a screenwriter.
  • M. Night has made crap for decades now, somehow he has learned nothing and the films continue to get worse

Votes: 79,486 | Gross: $1.60M

10 May 2019

  • Home, Hulu, mostly alone, Ali left part way through to take a nap
  • Recommended sheepishly by several people so I had to see why it is polarizing.
  • Deliberately uncomfortable long shots and takes effort to ignore that the ghost is shrouded in an actual sheet but it was actually creatively told through the eyes of a ghost like I haven't seen. And even though it isn't scary at all I was still excited and enthralled by the end when the ghost goes to the future and the past.

  • Found it on Youtube and couldn't resist watching it again
  • Probably more enjoyable the 2nd time, most operas have gaps between my favorite parts but this have so many parts having me say "oh, I like this scene...oh, I like this scene".
  • One of my favorite scenes is when the couples are saying goodbye before the men pretend to go to war. The song is mostly repeating "adieu" over and over but it is blissfully lovely, the voices of the 4 lovers (and the other 2) are varied but harmoniously so, no weak link or diva. And that is in addition to the acting being unusually realistic and passionate, even sultry by the end. Might be the sexiest opera production I've seen.
  • For so many days since I watched this I have had several melodies take turns sticking in my head. I've listened to 3 different cast recordings but this is my favorite.

  • Nowhere near original enough to matter, spirals into mild madness but never goes anywhere by the end, and isn't as shocking as they wanted it to be. It felt like a torture-porn movie, gore and depravity strictly to cringe the audience into being entertained.
  • The camera work and shot composition will trick people into thinking it's an important or daring movie....it is neither. Acting of main girl, Dani, was a highlight but most of the characters and actors detracted. Simple and moronic characters falling into slasher-film tropes.
  • Felt like Hostel with a wreath around its neck.

  • The only thing comparable is stunt work is Jackass...they don't even have special effects, the actors just throw each other off the building with an inch of plywood on a shack roof to break their fall. Also very humorous, lots of goofy and charming physical comedy by Jackie and his love interest.
  • I cringed throughout but it was as spectacular as any fight scenes I've seen. There was a lot of thought put into the choreography, it wasn't as impossible to believe as most "1 vs 20" fight scenes, Jackie was so quick he made it feel real and fantasy at the same time.

  • Never seen food talked about like this, it is beyond passionate although it had a sense of ultimate importance for ramen, I don't know if it is justified but I'd like to find out.
  • The sexual scenes were alarmingly awkward and out of place but I'm glad they were there, And they were actually pretty hot. I think they wanted the audience to get flushed at the sight of great food.
  • The only problem I had was that the color seemed a tad off, I know it's old and there may be limitations as far as remastering it but I hoped they could make the food look more vibrant and realistic.
