Mia Thermopolis and Nicholas Devereaux are the main couple of "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement". Mia and Nicholas first met during her 21st birthday party and shared a dance together, instantly developing a romantic connection between them. However, when Mia’s crown is threatened and discovers that Nicholas is another potential heir to the throne, Mia and Nicholas’s relationship takes a turn and they become rivals with Nicholas believing he is better suited to become Genovia’s next ruler. Mia finds herself forced into an arranged marriage to succeed her grandmother as queen while Nicholas and his uncle plot to romance Mia in order to break off her engagement to ensure he becomes king.
However, the more time they spend together, Mia and Nicholas begin to develop romantic feelings and soon realize they have fallen in love, but both attempt to ignore their true feelings. However, upon witnessing Mia’s kindness and selflessness, Nicholas decides to give up his pursuit of the throne and declare his love for Mia. Nicholas and Mia sneak off and spend a romantic night together, but the following morning, they found themselves being spied on with Mia believing Nicholas set it up to sabotage her. Both Mia and Nicholas are left heartbroken by the situation, but both later learn the truth that Nicholas's uncle was behind it. In the end, Mia is able to avoid the marriage and convince Parliament to allow her to rule the country. By the end of the film, Mia and Nicholas declare their love and become a couple.
