About such a crisis, one can make a film that speechifies and rattles off facts and figures, but at Black Rock we have the opportunity to create a moving and immersive drama that brings to life an inspiring attempt to combat this issue."

Pedram Shojai quotes from official site:

Progress At Any Cost Has Cost Us Plenty

"There's a concept in economics where things that don't fall onto your balance sheet are called 'externalities'. For instance, a coal company makes a ton of money but the environmental impact: cleanup costs, mercury in the oceans, smog, deforestation, and all the illness that comes from this somehow 'isn't their problem'. Society is left to deal with these externalities. Taxpayers, non-profits, fish, and wildlife all pay for their profits. Uncool."

About the Film

"Prosperity is following a new generation of companies that are doing the right thing and deserve our attention (and money). There's an emerging movement of 'For Benefit' companies that are building into their bylaws the new ethics of conscious companies..."

Anita Gates (Movie review excerpt): "There was Pinchas Rosenbaum, a Hungarian rabbi's son who disguised himself as a Nazi officer and managed to save a thousand Jews; Anna Heilman, the only survivor of the successful plot to blow up Crematorium No. 4 at Birkenau; and Willy Perl, an Austrian man who persuaded leaders in Berlin to let him 'deport' Jews, making it possible for thousands to escape safely to Palestine. The title characters of 'Unlikely Heroes' were ordinary people who, during World War II, resisted and defied the Nazis in remarkable ways. They also include Recha Sternbuch, who, over time, hid 30 people in her home in neutral Switzerland; Leon Kahn, a young Lithuanian who fought with the partisans there and in Russia and Poland; and Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, a Bauhaus artist who taught children in the Theresienstadt concentration camp to deal with their pain through art before she (and many of her young students) were put to death in Auschwitz. There is even a familiar face among these heroes. Robert Max Weiderman, a French singer who took a grave risk in secretly entertaining his fellow inmates on a regular basis ('Bei Mir Bist du Schön was a favorite song), changed his name to Robert Clary after the war." _________________

Safit Pardede - Local Paramilitary Leader quote: "We crushed their necks with wood. We hung them. We strangled them with wire. We cut off their heads. We ran them over with cars. Joshua Oppenheimer Director's Notes: "The Act of Killing exposed the consequences for all of us when we build our everyday reality on terror and lies. The Look of Silence explores what it is like to be a survivor in such a reality. Making any film about survivors of genocide is to walk into a minefield of clichés, most of which serve to create a heroic (if not saintly) protagonist with whom we can identify, thereby offering the false reassurance that, in the moral catastrophe of atrocity, we are nothing like perpetrators. But presenting survivors as saintly in order to reassure ourselves that we are good is to use survivors to deceive ourselves. It is an insult to survivors' experience, and does nothing to help us understand what it means to survive atrocity, what it means to live a life shattered by mass violence, and to be silenced by terror. To navigate this minefield of clichés, we have to explore silence itself.

The result, The Look of Silence, is, I hope, a poem about a silence borne of terror - a poem about the necessity of breaking that silence, but also about the trauma that comes when silence is broken. Maybe the film is a monument to silence - a reminder that although we want to move on, look away and think of other things, nothing will make whole what has been broken. Nothing will wake the dead. We must stop, acknowledge the lives destroyed, strain to listen to the silence that follows."

John Bul Dau quote: "It was as if the last day, as people say in the Bible, that there will be a last day, that Jesus Christ will come, and whatever on Earth will be judged. That was my imagination. I thought that God felt tired of people on Earth here, felt tired of the bad deeds, the bad thing that we are doing, yet God is watching on us. I thought God got tired of us and he wants to finish us. When I think of it back... it was so bad anyway. You can even think of - you can even regret why you were born. Why you were born. Now I wonder, I'm now again wearing clothes, feeling very happy, and so anyway, everything has an end. Has an end.
