HIV/AIDS Education Comes to "The Real World"
The third season of MTV's landmark "Real World" franchise introduced viewers to reality TV's first openly gay man with AIDS. Pedro Zamora, a Cuban-American AIDS educator who had been infected with HIV during his teens, joined the San Francisco cast of the series' third season that aired in 1994, using the show as a platform to help inform the public and his housemates about safe sex and living with HIV. At the time, he was one of the foremost faces of HIV/AIDS awareness in the public arena. Zamora died Nov. 11, 1994, of AIDS-related progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, just hours after the season finale aired.
