Bertolucci was a poet and worked with his friend and mentor Pier Paolo Pasolini before directing his own films. He also co-wrote Sergio Leone's C'era una volta il West (1968). He caused scandal a few times, especially with the sexual content of Ultimo tango a Parigi (1972). Later, his The Last Emperor (1987) won nine Oscars including Best Picture.
