August Picks: The Movies and TV Shows You Can't Miss9 of 10
"Carnival Row" | Premieres Friday, Aug. 30, on Prime Video
While it's a little outside my wheelhouse, early buzz on "Carnival Row" has me curious. Teased as a fantasy detective procedural, the show seems to have legs (or wings) as political commentary and high concept, as well. The series focuses on a human detective (Orlando Bloom) and a winged "fae" (Cara Delevingne) investigating a string of the murders of mythical creatures living in the slums of the eponymous ghetto. Amazon Studios must feel good about the show's prospects, too. The series has already been green-lit for a second season, despite the fact that audiences won't see it until Aug. 30. — James
