Manolo and Maria were about to get engaged during "The Book of Life". Late at night, Manolo went to Maria's balcony and told her to meet him at the bridge at dawn. Maria snuck away to find the bridge covered in candles, leading her to Manolo outside of town as he sang, Can't Help Falling in Love. Manolo showed Maria the town lighting up as the sun rose, showing off its beauty and described its exactly how he feels everytime they are together. Manolo got down on one knee and began to propose by declaring his everlasting love for Maria who in return began to confess her love for Manolo. However, the proposal was interrupted by a two headed snake. Maria pushed Manolo out of the way, but was bitten in the process and apparently died.
Heartbroken and blaming himself for Maria's death, Manolo decided to follow her into the afterlife, but discovered he was tricked by Xibalba and that Maria was still alive and actually fell into a coma. In order to be with Maria once again, Manolo had to pass a trial to return to the Land of the Living and succeeded simply by being himself. Manolo was restored to life, reuniting him and Maria and altogether with Joaquin, they took part in the final battle to save their home. By the end of the film, Manolo and Maria got married and became husband and wife.
