As of 2005, the transcendental optimist, Dr. Pangloss, could indeed say that "everything was for the best, the best of all worlds" after the premiere of "Candide", at Rio's Theatro Municipal. Leonard Bernstein's opera sounded like an astonishing revue-operetta thanks to the translation of the libretto by Claudio Botelho, who preserved the original rhymes and signalled a willingness to make the show rather more accessible to a non-operatic audience, and to Matisse-inspired sets & costumes, which earned an almost juvenile connotation.
