Without the staggered narrative device, the film is too bare-bones in terms of its ideas and themes. Because of this, it's curiously restricted by its own story upon repeated viewings. I'm aware the device is meant to serve as the backbone of the experience in the first place; it's when all the pieces have already been fitted that we have virtually nothing to sustain us afterwards.
I am caught between a rating of ★★★ and ★★★☆. While I choose to grant the film the latter, the last half-star is conditional, insofar as the experience for the viewer is a novel one. Any subsequent viewing would warrant a solid commendation on the part of its machinations and only that.
