*Studied 'film' at a U.S. university! *Have a particular interest in the 'Western' genre! *My apologies if the list is too long and boring to you! You may just browse through the 10/10s (super-masterpiece), 9/10s (masterpiece) and 8/10s (excellent); and skip the 7/10s (good)! *I have seen a great number of more Westerns that I have rated 6/10 (above average) and down; not included in this list! *This list is not finalized; hence, it will be updated occasionally! *Ratings given here only pertain to the WESTERN GENRE exclusive of all other cinematic genres; therefore, except for a small number, the majority of films on this list are OVERRATED by ONE STAR! *Finally, this is a 'PERSONAL LIST'; MY idea; MY opinion; MY list! It is a plain simple 'PERSONAL LIST' just like 'ANY OTHER PERSONAL LIST/LISTS'! SO, PLEASE TREAT IT JUST AS SUCH!!!

Votes: 12,846

My rating: 10/10

This Peckinpah immortal super-masterpiece was very well-received and loved in Europe and all over the world where it was screened as 'GUNS IN THE AFTERNOON'. It beat Fellini's OTTO E MEZZO for the fist prize at a competition in Belgium in 1964!!!

A SMALL NUMBER OF FILM CRITICS BELIEVE IT IS EVEN A BETTER FILM THAN THE BETTER-KNOWN SUPER-MASTERPIECE 'THE WILD BUNCH' BY THE SAME DIRECTOR!

4. The Wild Bunch (1969)

R | 135 min | Action, Adventure, Western

97 Metascore

An aging group of outlaws look for one last big score as the "traditional" American West is disappearing around them.

Votes: 81,815 | Gross: $12.06M

My rating: 10/10

*** THIS IS THE ONE WESTERN THAT LEAVES NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT . . . BUT I WILL GO ON AND SAY SOMETHING ANYWAY!

*** THE ESSENCE OF PECKINPAH'S WORLDVIEW ABOUT THE TRUE NATURE OF AN ANIMAL CALLED 'HUMAN BEING' THAT MANY FILM REVIEWERS AND STUDIO EXECUTIVES HAVE ALWAYS HATED TO THE BONE MARROW BECAUSE THEY'RE JUST NOT HONEST ENOUGH TO LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND SEE WHAT THIS 'THINKING ANIMAL' REALLY LOOKS LIKE! THIS IS THE FUNDAMENTAL REASON WHY THEY COULD NOT STAND A GENIUS FILMMAKER WHO STOOD HIS GROUND AND DID NOT SUCCUMB TO THEIR MELO/FAKE WORLDVIEW ABOUT THIS 'UNSCRUPULOUS ANIMAL'! * YES, THE TRUTH (ALMOST) ALWAYS HURTS; AND IT'S NOT GOOD FOR BUSINESS EITHER, WHETHER ONE IS A FILM FINANCIER, OR A PRETENTIOUS FILM REVIEWER ON THE PAYROLL OF BIG BUSINESS IN SUCH AND SUCH A NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE OR WHATEVER!

*** EVIDENTLY, PECKINPAH NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED THE NARCISSISTIC SELF-THANKFUL LIGHT IN WHICH THE GREAT MAJORITY OF HUMAN BEINGS VIEW THEIR SPECIES IN! * WATCH 'APOCALYPSE NOW' BY 'F F C' AND CONTEMPLATE ABOUT HUMAN "SELF-DESTRUCTION"; A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY APT CASE IN POINT, EVEN IF THAT'S NOT WHAT COPPOLA HAD IN MIND WHEN HE MADE THIS 1979 SUPER-MASTERPIECE! * ALSO WATCH PECKINPAH'S OWN 'STRAW DOGS, 1971'; 'PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID, 1973'; 'BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, 1974'; AND 'CROSS OF IRON, 1977'; ALONG WITH 'RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY, 1962' TO GET MORE FAMILIAR WITH HIS CYNICAL AND DEFIANT VIEW OF THE BASIC INSTINCTS OF THE 'HUMAN RACE' IN THE FACE OF WHAT STUDIO EXECUTIVES WISHED TO PROMOTE!

*** SAM ALSO HAS LESS IMPORTANT FILMS THAT ARE IN FACT PARODIES OF FILMS MADE BY OTHERS, AN ELEMENT THAT HIS MANY ENEMIES KNOWINGLY IGNORED TO KEEP HIM SIDELINED AS MUCH AS THEY COULD THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER! IN MY OPINION, PECKINPAH WAS MUCH MORE OF A REALIST THAN A NIHILIST OR AN ANARCHIST THAT HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN ACCUSED OF!

*** FINALLY & SIMPLY, THE GREATEST WESTERN AND ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS, WESTERN OR NON-WESTERN, EVER MADE; NO DISCUSSION!

P.S. * JUST TO BE FACTUAL AND OBJECTIVE: ALONG WITH HIS SEVERAL MASTERPIECES AND EXCELLENT CREATIONS, SAM HAS A NUMBER OF GOOD, AVERAGE AND WEAK FILMS AS WELL; WAS NOT A PROLIFIC FILMMAKER FOR A COMBINATION OF REASONS ANYWAY; SUFFERED FROM DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE AND DIDN'T GET TO LIVE A LONG LIFE; AND OF COURSE WAS ALMOST ALWAYS A REBEL AND CONSEQUENTLY AN OUTCAST IN HOLLYWOOD FOR MOST OF HIS NOT SUCH A LONG CAREER!

* ONE OF THE GREATEST AND MORE-THAN-A-WESTERN WESTERNS EVER MADE!

* THE AVERAGE IMDB USER RATING FOR THIS SUPERB PENN MASTERPIECE IS UTTERLY MISLEADING FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO SEE A SERIOUS WESTERN FILM!
