My favorite Movies

by therosenpants | created - 13 Apr 2014 | updated - 20 Jul 2017 | Public

Not a comprehensive list, but I've been meaning to compile one for a while, as people keep asking me what they are and I can only tell them my top movie and list off a bunch of random ones. I'd be nice to have them in some kind of order.

1. Gone with the Wind (1939)

Passed | 238 min | Drama, Romance, War

97 Metascore

A sheltered and manipulative Southern belle and a roguish profiteer face off in a turbulent romance as the society around them crumbles with the end of slavery and is rebuilt during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.

Directors: Victor Fleming, George Cukor, Sam Wood | Stars: Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Thomas Mitchell, Barbara O'Neil

Votes: 333,994 | Gross: $198.68M

My favorite film of all time. I've seen it hundreds of times, and quote it regularly. It's the one I grew up on, though I can't say I've read the book all the way through. It's one of those movies, you know?

2. Amadeus (1984)

R | 160 min | Biography, Drama, Music

87 Metascore

The life, success and troubles of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as told by Antonio Salieri, the contemporaneous composer who was deeply jealous of Mozart's talent and claimed to have murdered him.

Director: Milos Forman | Stars: F. Murray Abraham, Tom Hulce, Elizabeth Berridge, Roy Dotrice

Votes: 427,486 | Gross: $51.97M

From here on out the list is not in much of an order, just as they come to me. I love Mozart in general, as one of my favorite musicals is Mozart l'Opera Rock from France. It really sold me on cinematography, writing, and of course excellent performances from the whole cast. In the words of the Nostalgia Critic, it is truly a perfect film.

3. Little Women (1994)

PG | 115 min | Drama, Family, Romance

87 Metascore

The March sisters live and grow in post-Civil War America.

Director: Gillian Armstrong | Stars: Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes

Votes: 63,530 | Gross: $50.08M

Another one of those films I grew up on. I've only seen bits and pieces of the Katherine Hepburn classic, but I don't know, I just feel like I KNOW the March sisters from this movie. Jo was always a role model for me, as a writer, and Beth's character gets me every time.

4. The Phantom of the Opera (1989)

R | 93 min | Drama, Horror, Music

A young soprano becomes the obsession of a horribly disfigured composer, who has plans for those who oppose him or the young singer.

Director: Dwight H. Little | Stars: Robert Englund, Jill Schoelen, Alex Hyde-White, Bill Nighy

Votes: 4,513 | Gross: $3.95M

This film is on here more to encompass all Phantom of the Opera movies, but out of all of them it's definitely my favorite. It's not as slasher as it's perceived to be, but it's still mildly gory. Robert Englund is the true standout of the film, easily the most ironically likable character on this list. If his one-liners aren't sure to grab you, his backstory is sure to.

5. Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

PG | 91 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

67 Metascore

A disfigured composer sells his soul for the woman he loves so that she will perform his music. However, an evil record tycoon betrays him and steals his music to open his rock palace, The Paradise.

Director: Brian De Palma | Stars: Paul Williams, William Finley, Jessica Harper, Gerrit Graham

Votes: 22,355 | Gross: $0.16M

This is the other Phantom movie on this list, but mostly because it's too awesome to leave out. If you hadn't guessed I love the Phantom of the Opera, but I"m not a stickler for being totally accurate to the book. I love all the versions, but this one is just fun, zany, and actually a bit tragic. I love a movie with heavy Faustian elements, and this and Englund's Phantom use the legend perfectly.

6. Marie Antoinette (2006)

PG-13 | 123 min | Biography, Drama, History

64 Metascore

The retelling of France's iconic but ill-fated queen, Marie Antoinette. From her betrothal and marriage to Louis XVI at 14 to her reign as queen at 19 and to the end of her reign as queen, and ultimately the fall of Versailles.

Director: Sofia Coppola | Stars: Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Rip Torn, Steve Coogan

Votes: 121,746 | Gross: $15.96M

This film made me love Marie Antoinette. It's not exactly the greatest film, but it's beautifully shot, and the design of it is just stunning.

7. Mona Lisa Smile (2003)

PG-13 | 117 min | Drama

45 Metascore

A free-thinking art professor teaches conservative 1950s Wellesley girls to question their traditional social roles.

Director: Mike Newell | Stars: Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles, Maggie Gyllenhaal

Votes: 90,849 | Gross: $63.86M

I must say, I really don't like Julia Roberts at all. Very few films do I like her in, but I really love this movie not for her story, but for the other girls and the fifties aesthetic-- with the added twist of actually portraying what it was like for women in that time. I've heard this isn't an accurate depiction of what the college is like, but I'm not one for being super accurate to source material so long as it tells a good story.

8. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)

R | 123 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

62 Metascore

A vampire tells his epic life story: love, betrayal, loneliness, and hunger.

Director: Neil Jordan | Stars: Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas, Kirsten Dunst

Votes: 347,058 | Gross: $105.26M

I adore the Vampire Chronicles, and this is one of the most accurate adaptations of a novel to screen, which while I don't mind usually, it's a nice change. Tom Cruise is perfect as Lestat, I can't imagine anyone else playing him now (Chris Hemsworth Anne Rice? Really? No offense to Chris, but I just can't see him playing the Prince of Darkness... though then again, Anne Rice couldn't see Cruise either). Hope the new book Prince Lestat will continue the story better than some of the later books.

9. The Man Who Laughs (1928)

Not Rated | 110 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

When a proud noble refuses to kiss the hand of the despotic King James in 1690, he is cruelly executed and his son surgically disfigured.

Director: Paul Leni | Stars: Mary Philbin, Conrad Veidt, Julius Molnar, Olga Baclanova

Votes: 8,056

Easily my favorite silent film. I haven't seen a wide gamut of them, and I'm sad to say only one Chaplin film has graced my eyes, but this film is just stunning. Mary Philbin is also a goddess in this, and acts with much more real emotion than she did in Phantom.

10. Anastasia (1997)

G | 94 min | Animation, Adventure, Drama

61 Metascore

The last surviving child of the Russian Royal Family joins two con men to reunite with her grandmother, the Dowager Empress, while the undead Rasputin seeks her death.

Directors: Don Bluth, Gary Goldman | Stars: Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Christopher Lloyd, Kelsey Grammer

Votes: 135,871 | Gross: $58.41M

Unlike Little Women, I HAVE seen the film this particular rendition of the Anastasia story is based on. While I love Ingrid Bergman's film, and I REALLY know how historically inaccurate this movie is, it is my favorite animated film. I have heard that even Russians like this, and see it as a kind of fairytale version of their history, which I think is a good description. The best part about it, besides the beautiful background design and Broadway (here's hoping!) quality music, is the characters. I wish Anastasia was a Disney Princess sometimes, because she would easily be my favorite. She acts like a real women with real troubles and dreams, and genuinely falls in love with her love interest. It's also a movie I grew up on, though it just gets better with age.

11. Moulin Rouge! (2001)

PG-13 | 127 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

66 Metascore

A poor Bohemian poet in 1890s Paris falls for a beautiful courtesan and nightclub star coveted by a jealous duke.

Director: Baz Luhrmann | Stars: Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, John Leguizamo, Jim Broadbent

Votes: 299,157 | Gross: $57.39M

This is going to be the first of many Ewan McGregor movies on this list. Unlike with Phantom movies, I recognize that MANY of his films are terrible. But he is my favorite actor, and it's really hard not to love every role he touches. This is a bit of a guilty pleasure movie, like for a lot of people. It's not very deep, but I love the imagery and the setting, and the burlesque quality of the design is wonderful. And of course, hearing Ewan sing is always a plus. ;P

12. Cloud Atlas (2012)

R | 172 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

Directors: Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski | Stars: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving

Votes: 374,192 | Gross: $27.11M

Yes, I'm one of the ones who love this "either love or hate" movie. I haven't read the book (but it's in my line of books to be read on my shelf), but it just hit me like a tone of bricks at its beauty. Yes, I do think it tries too hard to be profound, but that doesn't bother me. I especially love Sixsmith and Frobisher's stories, and the Cloud Atlas theme is wonderful.

13. Shakespeare in Love (1998)

R | 123 min | Comedy, Drama, History

87 Metascore

The world's greatest ever playwright, William Shakespeare, is young, out of ideas and short of cash, but meets his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays.

Director: John Madden | Stars: Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes, Geoffrey Rush, Tom Wilkinson

Votes: 234,215 | Gross: $100.32M

Boy do I love movies that fictionalize historical figures. I mean I REALLY love them. There are probably going to be at least ten on this list, as we've already seen three so far, this being the fourth. I'm also a Shakespeare nut (though not on Tom Hiddleston's level ;D), and since we know so little about him it's always fun to see reinventions. Gwenyth Paltrow is nice I suppose, not sure if she deserved the Oscar, but I adore Joseph Fiennes (his brother too).

14. Black Swan (2010)

R | 108 min | Drama, Thriller

79 Metascore

Nina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare.

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Winona Ryder

Votes: 823,696 | Gross: $106.95M

I love theatre and acting in general, but ballet has always been a mystery to me. I don't take this as truth about what the Ballet world is like, but it's a very charged, thrilling film, and I do love Swan Lake and Tchaikovsky's work.

15. Clue (1985)

PG | 94 min | Comedy, Crime, Mystery

41 Metascore

Six guests are anonymously invited to a strange mansion for dinner, but after their host is killed, they must cooperate with the staff to identify the murderer as the bodies pile up.

Director: Jonathan Lynn | Stars: Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd

Votes: 109,149 | Gross: $14.64M

Ahhhh this movie. It's a bloody masterpiece, and no one can convince me otherwise.

16. Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)

PG-13 | 121 min | Drama, Romance

66 Metascore

The Brothers Grimm arrive at the home of a wealthy Grande Dame who speaks of the many legends surrounding the fable of the cinder girl before telling the "true" story of her ancestor.

Director: Andy Tennant | Stars: Drew Barrymore, Anjelica Huston, Dougray Scott, Patrick Godfrey

Votes: 81,651 | Gross: $65.71M

Another one of those loved since childhood movies. I love Angelica Houston, definitely a worthy villian, though still a little sympathetic. The opening scenes traumatized me every time with her father. Though there are problems, it's a moving film. I love fairytales retold!

17. Labyrinth (1986)

PG | 101 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

50 Metascore

Sixteen-year-old Sarah must solve a labyrinth to rescue her baby brother when he is taken by the Goblin King.

Director: Jim Henson | Stars: David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, Toby Froud, Shelley Thompson

Votes: 149,433 | Gross: $12.73M

NOT a film I grew up on, sad to say, but boy do I love it, glitter, glam, David Bowie's junk and all. I was introduced to Bowie through this, and he's definitely one of my favorite singers now.

18. Velvet Goldmine (1998)

R | 118 min | Drama, Music

65 Metascore

In 1984, British journalist Arthur Stuart investigates the career of 1970s glam superstar Brian Slade, who was heavily influenced in his early years by hard-living and rebellious American singer Curt Wild.

Director: Todd Haynes | Stars: Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Christian Bale, Toni Collette

Votes: 38,282 | Gross: $1.05M

Speaking of glitter, glam, AND David Bowie's junk, here's another Ewan film I adore. I've seen it a few times, and each time I like it more and more. It's really a sad movie about the music industry, but the performances are wonderful. I also love gay cinema, so there's going to be a bunch of gay films on this list.

19. Titanic (1997)

PG-13 | 194 min | Drama, Romance

75 Metascore

A seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.

Director: James Cameron | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates

Votes: 1,278,778 | Gross: $659.33M

Okay okay, so I love Titanic. I really prefer the White Star Line edition, but it's still definitely something to behold. I even don't mind the contrived love story, because the actors really make it something memorable.

20. Love Actually (2003)

R | 135 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

55 Metascore

Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.

Director: Richard Curtis | Stars: Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney

Votes: 531,198 | Gross: $59.70M

Tell me you don't love this movie. TELL ME.

21. Maurice (1987)

R | 140 min | Drama, Romance

75 Metascore

Two English school chums find themselves falling in love at Cambridge. To regain his place in society, Clive gives up Maurice and marries. While staying with Clive and his wife, Maurice discovers romance in the arms of the gamekeeper Alec.

Director: James Ivory | Stars: James Wilby, Rupert Graves, Hugh Grant, Denholm Elliott

Votes: 23,532 | Gross: $3.13M

Gay Edwardians. Really enough said there, but the performances are also perfection. I've also read the book and well... I think the movie does the better job of telling the story, though I might just need to reread it.

22. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)

G | 91 min | Animation, Drama, Family

74 Metascore

A deformed bell-ringer must assert his independence from a vicious government minister in order to help his friend, a gypsy dancer.

Directors: Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise | Stars: Demi Moore, Jason Alexander, Mary Kay Bergman, Corey Burton

Votes: 171,507 | Gross: $100.14M

I haven't read the book, but this is definitely Disney's best film, hands down for me (I like Beauty and the Beast, but I'm tired of it). It's sad that it didn't do so well, because it's something I think kids need nowadays - more mature subject matter, while still teaching a good message. Also... THAT MUSIC.

23. Miss Congeniality (2000)

PG-13 | 109 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

43 Metascore

An F.B.I. Agent must go undercover in the Miss United States beauty pageant to prevent a group from bombing the event.

Director: Donald Petrie | Stars: Sandra Bullock, Michael Caine, Benjamin Bratt, Candice Bergen

Votes: 229,997 | Gross: $106.81M

The sequel is terrible, but this is one of my favorite comedies. It ALWAYS makes me feel better when I'm having a bad day or sick.

24. Beaches (1988)

PG-13 | 123 min | Comedy, Drama, Music

46 Metascore

A privileged rich debutante and a cynical struggling entertainer share a turbulent, but strong childhood friendship over the years.

Director: Garry Marshall | Stars: Bette Midler, Barbara Hershey, John Heard, Spalding Gray

Votes: 28,856 | Gross: $57.04M

If you have a best friend, especially if you're a woman, you need to see this movie. Like now. Drop what you're doing and just watch it. You'll end up calling your best friend and talking for hours afterward.

25. Spirited Away (2001)

PG | 125 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

96 Metascore

During her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.

Director: Hayao Miyazaki | Stars: Daveigh Chase, Suzanne Pleshette, Miyu Irino, Rumi Hiiragi

Votes: 847,971 | Gross: $10.06M

I used to be an otaku, but since 10th grade I've moved on to other things. This is still one of the most visually striking films I've ever seen, however, and I can't imagine a list of mine without it. I've seen almost all Miyazaki's films, and this is definitely his best. I shipped Kohaku and Chihiro before I knew what shipping was.

26. Ed Wood (1994)

R | 127 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

71 Metascore

Ambitious but troubled movie director Edward D. Wood Jr. tries his best to fulfill his dreams despite his lack of talent.

Director: Tim Burton | Stars: Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette

Votes: 183,877 | Gross: $5.89M

If you love cinema and how it's made, you have to see this. My favorite Johnny Depp AND Tim Burton film, and I've seen most of their films.

27. Back to the Future (1985)

PG | 116 min | Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi

87 Metascore

Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover

Votes: 1,305,210 | Gross: $210.61M

Really goes for the whole Trilogy. Do I have to explain why?

28. The Truman Show (1998)

PG | 103 min | Comedy, Drama

90 Metascore

An insurance salesman discovers his whole life is actually a reality TV show.

Director: Peter Weir | Stars: Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich

Votes: 1,194,268 | Gross: $125.62M

One of Jim Carrey's best films. I love movies with a commentary on real life.

29. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

PG | 91 min | Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy

91 Metascore

King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table embark on a surreal, low-budget search for the Holy Grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles.

Directors: Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones | Stars: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam

Votes: 569,764 | Gross: $1.23M

I love the movie, but this also is here for the amazing musical that's based on it. It's a true classic, in every sense of the word.

30. Rebecca (1940)

Approved | 130 min | Drama, Mystery, Romance

86 Metascore

A self-conscious woman juggles adjusting to her new role as an aristocrat's wife and avoiding being intimidated by his first wife's spectral presence.

Director: Alfred Hitchcock | Stars: Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders, Judith Anderson

Votes: 146,599 | Gross: $4.36M

This movie gave me chills. I knew of the musical long before I saw the movie, and now the book is on my shelf waiting to be read. A fabulous story, I really hope the musical gets on Broadway.

31. V for Vendetta (2005)

R | 132 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

In a future British dystopian society, a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of "V", plots to overthrow the tyrannical government - with the help of a young woman.

Director: James McTeigue | Stars: Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, Rupert Graves, Stephen Rea

Votes: 1,178,432 | Gross: $70.51M

I feel like I keep repeating myself with the commentary, so unless I have an explanation or something I really love about the movie, just gonna list 'em.

32. Frozen (I) (2013)

PG | 102 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

75 Metascore

Fearless optimist Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.

Directors: Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee | Stars: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad

Votes: 663,262 | Gross: $400.74M

Yeees I love Frozen too, but I'm starting to get sick of hearing about it. I'm sure I won't eventually, once the hype dies down, so I'll put it on the list.

33. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

R | 100 min | Comedy, Horror, Musical

65 Metascore

A newly-engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must seek shelter at the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-n-Furter.

Director: Jim Sharman | Stars: Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien

Votes: 166,741 | Gross: $139.88M

I think this movie is obligatory on any list. I was obsessed with it for a good month after I saw it, watching it at least five times over again. It goes great with Phantom of the Paradise too. ;D

34. Hairspray (2007)

PG | 117 min | Comedy, Drama, Musical

81 Metascore

Pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show.

Director: Adam Shankman | Stars: John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Nikki Blonsky, Michelle Pfeiffer

Votes: 138,626 | Gross: $118.87M

Despite it getting a lot of critics on its case, I love this movie. It's fun, upbeat and you can tell the cast and crew had a lot of fun with it. I've seen the original movie and do not like it, so I think the music really helped it along. I also don't particularly mind John Travolta, though it is a bit odd a casting choice.

35. Priest (1994)

R | 98 min | Drama, Romance

A homosexual Catholic priest finds out during confessional that a young girl is being sexually abused by her father, and has to decide how to deal with both that secret and his own.

Director: Antonia Bird | Stars: Linus Roache, Tom Wilkinson, Robert Carlyle, Cathy Tyson

Votes: 11,027 | Gross: $4.18M

This isn't the Paul Bettany fantasy flick, this is the one about the gay priest. Yup, one of my favorite movies. This and Cloud Atlas are the two movies so far on this list that have moved me to unspeakable tears. It's a hard watch, but it's worth it.

36. Somewhere in Time (1980)

PG | 103 min | Drama, Fantasy, Romance

29 Metascore

A Chicago playwright uses self-hypnosis to travel back in time and meet the actress whose vintage portrait hangs in a grand hotel.

Director: Jeannot Szwarc | Stars: Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, Christopher Plummer, Teresa Wright

Votes: 32,483 | Gross: $9.71M

Director: Norman Jewison | Stars: Cher, Nicolas Cage, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello

Votes: 68,312 | Gross: $80.64M

Cher is my favorite singer, and this film is a classic. I also love the opera imagery and style of storytelling. No other film captures NYC so well, I think.

40. Little Ashes (2008)

R | 112 min | Biography, Drama, History

41 Metascore

About the young life and loves of artist Salvador Dalí, filmmaker Luis Buñuel and writer Federico García Lorca.

Director: Paul Morrison | Stars: Robert Pattinson, Javier Beltrán, Matthew McNulty, Marina Gatell

Votes: 9,620 | Gross: $0.48M

For the longest time this was in the top five faves, but has since dropped. I adore Robert Pattinson, and he even makes Twilight memorable just from how much he hated his own character. He's a really great actor outside of that series, and this was one of the first films I saw of his before Twilight even came out. It made me sob.

41. Nine to Five (1980)

PG | 109 min | Comedy

58 Metascore

Three female employees of a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot find a way to turn the tables on him.

I just watched this, but I knew before I started it it would become one of my new favorite movies. I'm literally in love with this trio. Can I join their group please?

Director: Matthew Vaughn | Stars: Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine

Director: Bob Fosse | Stars: Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem, Joel Grey

Votes: 59,323 | Gross: $42.77M

I finally watched this for the first time and I'm in love with everything about it. Especially the sort of polyamourous relationship between Brian, Sally and Max. <3

This film is my EXACT aesthetic.
