In an interview, Pelphrey discussed playing the complex character as "someone who would go so far as to cover themselves in tattoos of swastikas and hateful images is operating from a place of a lot of pain." He explained, "Even when that person chooses to turn their life around and make different choices, that pain doesn’t just go away. The question becomes: Can Bunker learn how to work through it and channel it in a positive way?"
