1. Breaking Bad (2008–2013)

TV-MA | 45 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

A chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer turns to manufacturing and selling methamphetamine with a former student in order to secure his family's future.

Stars: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Betsy Brandt

Votes: 2,131,816

Initially a hidden gem on AMC, Breaking Bad exploded on Netflix just before its final season and immediately inserted itself into the conversation of the best shows on television, with its final season cementing its status as one the greatest in the medium. Telling powerful stories about the complexities of morality and the infectious destruction that the pursuit of power provides, the series examines the effort of one cancer ridden man turning to a life of selling drugs to provide for his family. Every single member of the intimate cast shines, with Bryan Cranston tearing through the screen showing every shred of sadness, genius, insecurity, fear, rage, and potential for evil that the complex writing deserves. His performance truly is a sight to be seen, earth-shatteringly brilliant and is still somehow matched by Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn. Both manage to support their lead and in some instances, steal the limelight away from Bryan Cranston. Paul brings vulnerability to a dropout drug dealer and Gunn's conflicting emotions of love and fear help make this world of "monsters" so much more compelling than you would initially believe. But the cast doesn't end there, that's not even mentioning Giancarlo Esposito's chilling drug kingpin, Dean Norris's justice driven DEA agent, Bob Odenkirk's sleazy lawyer, and Jonathan Bank's cold enforcer. None of these characters would matter however if the writing wasn't so incredible. Every character is so complex, filled with flaws and fears and personality. Every storyline feels so organic always dripping with emotion and intensity. Every season just ups the stakes and gets better and better and better, with the final season making the impossible seem so incredibly easy by not only making a season of television better than the rest of the series but maybe the greatest final stretch of episodes a show has ever had. Every episode leading up to the climactic "Ozymandias", the greatest episode of television ever produced, perfectly summing up everything the show had been working toward, creating a perfect episode of television. The show really is that good, beautifully directed, edited, and shot the show will make you sweat on the edge of your seat while tears roll out of your eyes.

3. Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

TV-MA | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia.

Stars: Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey

Votes: 2,280,514

A cultural phenomenon that took the world by storm, Game of Thrones quickly surprised audiences with political and emotional complexity, its world-building and most famously it's brutality. Filled with blood curdling violence, sexuality and sadistic characters, the world of Westeros is not for the faint of heart, unlike the fantasy worlds of old, this one is far more steeped in reality even with mythical creatures and dragons. While those mystical elements are important, the series is far more interested in corruption, the pursuit of power, its horrible consequences, cycles of violence, history, war, family and politics. The battle scenes often surpass even the most chilling battles in film and leave the audience shaken by brutality and the lives lost for the pursuits of the ruling class. Just as exciting however are the scenes in dark rooms where the stakes are more emotional and the brutality while more subdued is just as powerful. All of it brought to life by one of the greatest ensemble casts ever in a television show. Kit Harrington's honorable tragic hero, Emilia Clarke's good-hearted but dangerous liberator, Maisie Williams strong willed tomboy set on revenge, Sophie Turner's eldest daughter coming into her own power, Michelle Fairly's mother defending her cubs, Alfie Allen's banished lord torn between two families, Dianna Rigg's Queen of Thorns, Gwendoline Christie's strong willed outcast, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's disgraced knight torn between morality and love, and Charles's Dance's cruel and powerful father. But the standout performers are clearly Peter Dinklage and Lena Heady, two children of the most powerful family in Westeros both vying for their fathers love. Dinklage shows intelligence, wit, and ultimately great sadness as he lives a life of cursed romances and the inability to escape such a cruel world as he is often the best player in a game with no winners. Lena Heady however portrays a deliciously evil queen, a character who you love to hate, until Mrs. Heady expertly switches between a scheming, self obsessed politician and a grieving woman trying to carve out a piece of the world for her family. Amazing writing filed with jaw-dropping moments, complex characters, and grand poetic characters are second to none. Along with the writing and acting, what makes Game of Thrones stand out is the tremendous level of filmmaking, with outstanding editing, a fantastic score, and probably the best direction and cinematography to ever be featured in a series. Power plays, war and romances keep the audience on the edge of our seats as our characters often just barely makes it out with their lives. While those moments bring terrific levels of tension, intrigue and emotion, the series ends on a bittersweet moment, where the characters that do survive are left in a world in shambles, destroyed by their own making after years of petty games and ignoring their true threat.
