Fails in historical Details

by Burgwaechterchen | created - 25 Feb 2017 | updated - 1 week ago | Public

No Doubt, this one is good..and it's Character is like a kind of Neo-Western,okay..but in the end it is set nowadays and the Rifles they use are THAT old fashioned, that I am sure you will never get such guns from the 1850's and 1860's (like the British,mid-1860's Martini-Henry Rifle),especially not FUNCTIONING..this is either an overambitioned Western-Aspect or simply bad Recherche..

Director: Jerry London | Stars: Gregory Peck, Christopher Plummer, John Gielgud, Raf Vallone

Votes: 3,706

Okay, this is set during the "German Occupation of Rome and the Vatican"..first of all:Rome was never straight directly occupied in the "classical" way..for the City of Rome it was a special back-and-forth Movement, carried by personal Intrigues and diplomatic Maneuvres.. But: The film states, that the Waffen-SS "commanded" Rome and therefore the *beep* were three..let's say influencial Nazi-German Officials in Rome;NEVER in the Vatican..the Vatican stayed unoccupied during whole WWII.There were Hermann-Bernhard Ramcke,Commander of the most potent German Parachute-Corps,who invaded Rome first..he controlled parts of Rome and so he was in Charge of Parts of Rome..then Albert Kesselring, first of all well-known Officer of the Luftwaffe;NEVER the Waffen-SS..he was a kind of military-dipolmatic Agent to the Representatives of,still ITALIAN Rome..and then, later,Rainer Stahel..Successor of Kesselring..Again,no Waffen-SS..simply Luftwaffe and clear Distance to the papal Borders..The true Vatican NEVER was occupied by any German or German Troops..AND FURTHERMORE: The German whatever Troops are supported by Italian Army Troops in this Film..First of all BULLsieeDDD..that never happened..some Italian Troops fought the former, shortly before allied German Army and Paratroopers-Troops,but only in some Suburb-Lanes of Rome..some Blackshirt-Fascist-Successor-hooliganlike-Packs helped the mixed German Soldiers..again,NO Waffen-SS..and,to end this Speech ;)..in this Film, the German-helping Italian Army-Troops wear the Colonial-Desert-Uniforms of Lybia and Abessinya of the mid-1930's..in ROME..this may only interest historical Nerds..but it's okay to me :)

Again..as most of the time..Good one..entertained me..BUT: this tries to summon the "spirit" of the the turning 19th/20th Century..it shows Turkish Military Uniforms and other Military Issues of 1900/1901..BUT this is set in 1920!!!!!And the other Scandal is the clearly,70's originating Hippie-Haircut and Fashion C.r.aP. of it's production Year 1970..
