Graduation
Years ago I argued with an acquaintance about Cristian Mungiu's 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days to the point where we still don't talk much. I believe that Mungiu is a masterful director who has rallied a band of post-Communist filmmakers around Eastern Europe and his storytelling messages are often more optimistic than they might appear on first viewing. Scratching Graduation's surface, the story is about the lengths a father goes to to help his university-bound daughter get out of Romania for a better life in the UK, and there's plenty of critical argument around whether the tale is just brutal or more brutally honest, with a nod to the current and future generations of Romanians to smash the state.
