So you think know "A Christmas Carol"? Which one of these questions would surprise you if you knew the answer?19 of 25
How many people did Scrooge employ?
At least two or maybe three. Bob Cratchit, the Chairwoman, and maybe the Laundress.
While many will argue that Scrooge only employed one person, the fact remains that when Scrooge first enters his chambers of his house (?), the fire in his fireplace is already lite and there is a pot of gruel warming on the hob. Who lit the fire and made him the gruel? The answer is most likely the chairwoman since, in those days, a chairwoman was a hired woman who came in during the days and performed light housekeeping duties. And in Stave four, it is she who makes these statements indicating she knew Scrooge a little better than the others when she says,
"eEery person has a right to take care of themselves. He always did." ... " if you wanted to keep'em after he was dead, a wicked old screw,"..." why wasn't he natural in this lifetime? If he had been, he'd have had somebody to look after him when he was struck with death, instead of lying gasping out his last there, alone by himself. " ... And ... "I hope he didn't die of anything catching? Eh?" said oh Joe, stopping in these work, and looking up. "Don't you be afraid of that," returned the woman. "I an't so fond of his company that I'd loiter about him for such things if he did."She even knew what shirt was his best. She worked for Scrooge even though other scholars argue against it.
