By far, one of my favorite movies of 2014 release-dates, possibly one of my favorite ever. A beautiful, dark and comedic love story. Highly recommend.
2. Cold in July (2014)
R | 109 min | Crime, Thriller

Director: Jim Mickle | Stars: Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard, Don Johnson, Vinessa Shaw
Votes: 37,612 | Gross: $0.41M
Very interesting movie... Like watching 3 different genre films in one: Thriller, Action/Suspense, Drama. Excellent cinematography and musical score to accompany the shifts in story, character and mood. Also found the setting of 1989 TX to be accurate down to the newspaper clipping on the wall. 7 years in the making, I found it very enjoyable due to it's unpredictability and artistic license.
3. Lucky Them (2013)
R | 97 min | Comedy, Drama
A rock journalist is assigned to track down her ex-boyfriend.
Director: Megan Griffiths | Stars: Toni Collette, Thomas Haden Church, Nina Arianda, Oliver Platt
Votes: 4,109 | Gross: $0.03M
Not the most likeable protagonist, and yet that is what made this story come full circle. I thought the performances were really great on all sides. Casting excellent. Writing both funny and tragic in a way that only a love/hurt relationship with Rock 'n roll can do.
4. Under the Skin (I) (2013)
R | 108 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery
A mysterious young woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. However, events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery.
Director: Jonathan Glazer | Stars: Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy McWilliams, Lynsey Taylor Mackay, Dougie McConnell
Votes: 158,090 | Gross: $2.61M
It took some time for me to see this as the cinematic MASTERPIECE that many others did, although I did find it quite extraordinary. A masterpiece to me must harbor and excel at all elements of filmmaking. While I adored the way that this film told it's story through an alienated lens, making you feel as much an outsider as Scar-Jo, and while I also felt floored by the use of simple (the black room, the footprints) and even still imagery (the man with the deformed face), AND ALSO While I felt the score was delightfully reminiscent of early horror/sci-fi, such as that of Argento and Cronenberg; it just didn't impact me initially as strongly as it did after a few months. As a cinephile (which is martianesque in it's own right), bravo! but as a human living on this earth, I can understand why pace of it all made it too hard to relate to (I know I know, that's the point) for some people. That being said, the final scene made it for me- made me realize what it would be like to finally feel human, and then want to retract all want of that all together. Decide it is not worth it to live in such agonizing danger and humiliation, even if it appears that as a woman you hold the power, to find that you are more victim than you ever could have imagined...? Well, it would be enough to (want to) rip my skin off...
5. Joe (I) (2013)
R | 117 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
An ex-con, who is the unlikeliest of role models, meets a 15-year-old boy and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin.
Director: David Gordon Green | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan, Gary Poulter, Ronnie Gene Blevins
Votes: 51,184 | Gross: $0.37M
Very entertaining; good story. Young boy was so believable. Nick Cage in for the win. A simple but gravitational character piece.
6. Marlene (1984)
Unrated | 94 min | Documentary, Biography
Retrospective on the career of enigmatic screen diva Marlene Dietrich.
Director: Maximilian Schell | Stars: Marlene Dietrich, Maximilian Schell, Annie Albers, Bernhard Hall
Votes: 842 | Gross: $0.85M
Very moving. A face so well-known; performances so impactful. Yet, nostalgia is not worth the pain for so strong (and lonely) the lady. Interesting view of what it is like to make a documentary of someone while never showing their face.
7. Jodorowsky's Dune (2013)
PG-13 | 90 min | Documentary
The story of cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky's ambitious but ultimately doomed film adaptation of the seminal science fiction novel.
Director: Frank Pavich | Stars: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Michel Seydoux, H.R. Giger, Chris Foss
Votes: 27,533 | Gross: $0.65M
Absolutely riveting, inspiring, and dare-I-say-it, even life-changing! Jodorowsky is a true hero of human compassion, soul and artistry for social equality and freedom of mind.
8. Bastards (2013)
Unrated | 100 min | Drama, Romance
Marco returns to Paris after his brother-in-law's suicide, where he targets the man his sister believes caused the tragedy - though he is ill-prepared for her secrets as they quickly muddy the waters.
Director: Claire Denis | Stars: Vincent Lindon, Chiara Mastroianni, Julie Bataille, Michel Subor
Votes: 3,742 | Gross: $0.01M
Very strange ride through the story, but every time you want to ask "What just happened?" or "Why?" the question was answered by the next frame, making it flow well regardless. Liked a lot
9. Sorcerer (1977)
PG | 121 min | Adventure, Drama, Thriller
Four unfortunate men from different parts of the globe agree to risk their lives transporting gallons of nitroglycerin across dangerous Latin American jungle.
Director: William Friedkin | Stars: Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal, Amidou
Votes: 27,551 | Gross: $12.00M
Last night I had the pleasure of viewing 'Sorcerer' for my first time at Film Forum, in a small dark theater surrounded by other film fans. The film was *beep* rad. The fact that a recently restored 35mm movie, a total FLOP at the time, and also a complete disaster during production, could turn an entire audience onto the edge of their seats, jaws-dropped from excitement, was remarkable to me.
The film was followed by an amazing Skype Q+A with one of my personal Idols, Director, William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A. (!!!)). I seriously could have cried from the insight this vet had to give. With more films dropped then made since then, he seems to have come a long way from literally catapulting Ellen Burstyn into a wall to get a "real reaction". One highlight was: (when asked how he can get such severely flawed characters to be so sympathetic and rooted for) I want to see a show a of hands, which one of you is NOT deeply, deeply flawed. I would like to know... (Clearly no one could raise their hands)
If you like stories on the fate of man, mixed in with action and suspense, and want to see something truly exemplary of a time in film history not to be forgotten (not only pre-cgi but, real and life-threatening to the cast and crew and made anyway- as well as some amazing blow ups) find 'Sorcerer' and revisit any and all works of William Friedkin.
Friedkin will also be coming out with a new film soon on the life of Mae West, played by Bette Midler, in which he claims, "you will not see any [of his usual] violence, though there will be what appears to be a gun in a man's pocket..." Stay tuned.
10. Particle Fever (2013)

Crazy Backstory to the Higgs Boson. So many implications!
11. Palo Alto (2013)
R | 100 min | Drama
An unflinching portrait of adolescent lust, boredom, and self-destruction that centers around a shy young girl on the cusp of an illicit relationship with her soccer coach.
Director: Gia Coppola | Stars: Emma Roberts, James Franco, Jack Kilmer, Zoe Levin
Votes: 31,121 | Gross: $0.75M
I did not know what to expect with this movie, but I LOVED it. James Franco-face aside, this movie- from so much new fresh talent, to it's teen nostalgia soundtrack- made me feel a lot of feels. It was innocent in all of it's danger, in the way that only a good teen movie can be. Very reminiscent of American Graffiti. Came full-circle, and truly represented the aimlessness and irresponsibility that we clutch onto so dearly in our youth, as well as the subtle tingles and maladies of young love and lust.
12. Computer Chess (2013)
Not Rated | 92 min | Comedy
A 1980s-set story centered around a man vs. machine chess tournament.
Director: Andrew Bujalski | Stars: Kriss Schludermann, Tom Fletcher, Wiley Wiggins, Patrick Riester

Weird as HELL, but ambitious in that nonetheless. Dug it.
13. Me and You (2012)
103 min | Drama
An introverted teenager tells his parents he is going on a ski trip, but instead spends his time alone in a basement.
Director: Bernardo Bertolucci | Stars: Jacopo Olmo Antinori, Tea Falco, Sonia Bergamasco, Veronica Lazar
Votes: 5,885
I had to sleep on this film. All-in-all, I really liked it, though it is bittersweet… ‘Io e te’ was a unique and artfully crafted story made with love and care for it’s characters. Down to the detail of blond leg hairs on Olivia’s (Tea Falco) legs when she in undressing, or the soundtrack playing in Lorenzo’s (Jacopo Olmo Antinori) ears as he seeks refuge from daily life in his own head, the film completely immersed you in these two people’s lives. It was true to what I love most of italian culture, passion. Whether what each character spoke was true, their feelings were apparent, faces and gestures honest.
Though I am left with a sour taste, unsure of what will come, a film that impacts me with wonder and tenderness like this is worth relays & recommendations. Check it out.
14. Hellion (2014)

Director: Kat Candler | Stars: Aaron Paul, Juliette Lewis, Josh Wiggins, Deke Garner
Votes: 5,658 | Gross: $0.04M
Attended the screening of this film at IFC center followed by Q+A with members of the production crew, the very inspiration writer/director Kat Candler, and one of the stars, playing the father of Josh, Aaron Paul. This film covers so much grown in living under bad circumstances but having to take responsibility anyway. The character's rapport and chemistry were undeniable. 'Hellion' is an IMPORTANT movie; heartwrenching and yet uplifting in a naturally gravitating way. Real.
15. Jealousy (2013)

Votes: 1,970 | Gross: $0.06M
Excellent partnership of concise dialogue and deafening silence to convey a quite dramatic, but also enticingly raw and realistic group of relationships. PG never fails to show the beautiful intricacies of people. From body and facial language to a dark coat hanging on the wall: Everything tells the story and means something. Beautifully casted as well, very intriguing, talented and emotive actors. Very french. Very good.
