Cannes Diary - Day One
For the attendee it's a momentous occasion, one that may not ever occur again for even the biggest of stars. How often in their lifetimes will the release schedule of a film they're in coincide with the mid-May dates of the festival? How many times will a film they're in be submitted and accepted and they'll be available? They realize what a special time it is. I watched Bill Murray in an ebullient mood for the MOONRISE KINGDOM Opening Night Premiere, boogie-ing to Steve Wonder 's "I Wish" on the top of the stairs, something that should have been captured and for posterity by somebody but wasn't. The photographers lining the route are only interested in capturing often very posed photos of the very famous and the very glamorous; they're not there to capture the historic moment for the film or the filmmakers as a team. If some of these folks don't take a selfie they'll have no photographic/digital proof of the event in the context of the event as it really, spontaneously happened.
