Catastrophe: A He Said/She Said Review2 of 6
STORYLINE
She says: It's fun and endearing to see Rob and Sharon fumble their way through simultaneously getting to know each other and trying to make a relationship work despite it being the most inconvenient and potentially catastrophic decision. It's impossible to watch and not get a little self-reflective about your own relationships and issues of money, doctor visits, and emotional support. They tackle a set of very real problems, but are able to move forward without depending on the typical TV tropes to get them through it. The writing is sharp and full of surprises that don't feel forced or like last-minute plot devices. 'Catastrophe' is built on intimate conversations and interactions that mainly happen between Rob and Sharon in private.
He says: Interleaving the harsh realities of a new relationship — compounded by complicated details — with thoughtful dialog, humor with depth, and fresh story progression evokes a twisted but optimistic view on tackling (or stumbling over) each obstacle that appears. Some of the arguments and talks felt as if I was watching my own relationship on the small screen, which tells me the writers really nailed it. Reflecting on the general arc of events leaves everything mapped to a common list of things that, unfortunately, can and do happen to everyone. The intricate and thoughtful way we travel along, watch, and listen provides a fun and insightful account.
