The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games films created an all-too plausible dystopia. The movies contrast the poverty of the fictional nation of Panem’s District 12, the home of the film’s heroine Katniss, with the wealth of the Capitol. District 12, a mining city, is dusty and dirty, evoking Appalachia. When Katniss arrives in the Capitol, where she is treated like a celebrity before participating in the televised games where she will almost certainly die, its glitz and ostentatious luxury is like Las Vegas on steroids. The games themselves are their own world, a stadium with artificial climates and forests and terrifying genetically engineered creatures.
