Mad Max
The Mad Max films are set in a desert dystopia in which both water and gasoline are in short supply. Max was a man of few words who, after his wife and child were killed by a motorcycle gang, became a reluctant hero, fighting corrupt villains with no goal beyond his own survival. The first 3 films, released in the 1970s and 80s, starred Mel Gibson. The series revved up again with 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, with Tom Hardy taking over the role. The film is structured like an unending chase scene. Its imaginative visuals included vehicles that looked like they were created entirely out of junk, a tumor with a name, and a guitar-powered truck. Director George Miller eschewed CGI, physically creating the entire universe, resulting in more realistic action sequences. The movie has a strong feminist theme, with a plot involving a female scavenger driver who rescues a powerful warlord’s concubines, and literally drags Max along for the ride.
