January Picks: The Movies and TV You Can't Miss20 of 23
The White Tiger | Premieres Friday, Jan. 22 on Netflix
Plot: The epic journey of an Indian driver (Adarsh Gourav) who uses his wit and cunning to break free from servitude to his rich masters and rise to the top. Based on the New York Times bestseller by Aravind Adiga.
Our Take: The White Tiger brings Indian Cinema and Hollywood together behind the scenes, with producers Ava DuVernay, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and writer-director Ramin Bahrani striving to tell a story about the righteous fight against class divide and corruption in India. An extremely ambitious project, I look forward to the talented Rajkummar Rao's dark portrayal and appreciate the self-aware jab at Slumdog Millionaire in the teaser — a reference to the Oscar-winning Danny Boyle movie that, I believe, captured India via the Western gaze and featured harmful stereotypes. — Sneha
