January Picks: The Movies and TV You Can't Miss4 of 23
"30 Coins" | Series Premieres Monday, Jan. 4 on HBO MAX
Plot: When inexplicable terror begins to plague the idyllic community of Pedraza, Spain, the local vet, the town’s mayor, and an exiled priest form an unlikely alliance to understand the source of the strange and demonic events.
Our Take: "30 Coins" may be too scary for my tastes, but as a huge fan of cult director Álex de la Iglesia's 1995 horror-comedy The Day of the Beast I’m going to try to power through this one. The series follows a similar premise as Beast, a priest with a dubious past forms an unlikely alliance to save the world from the Devil. But this time the Death Metal fan and Occult TV host of Beast are replaced with a local vet and the town’s major, and to make things more interesting, the priest at the center of "30 Coins" is an exorcist who knows how to box. This might be terrifying but it also looks like a lot of fun. — Vanessa
