I honestly love the film ratio and how it matches the use of handheld in your face camera work. Along with editing that cuts back and forth perfectly from two different timelines that work out perfectly. Along with two performances that are a complete knockout. Okay now onto the story. One word weak.

December 1, 2021.

It is pretty boring and slow. It is no MCU film so obviously it is a bad movie that would have done bad in theaters. It has nothing to do with it being a movie with zero replay value no humor or anything resembling a wide spread audience would be in love with. Even I like the movie but still big superhero movies are not killing cinemas or even streaming services. This is just a film that would have done poorly at the box office and nothing would have change that. So it is a good thing that this film at least got to see the light of day and I’m glad I saw it. I just want to watch good movies, therefore I’m glad at least I have a streaming service to deliver quality entertainment. Even tho this film may not be a home run as so many say it is.

Watching this on my b day hits much harder than if I didn’t. Holy shit this movie is so lively it is almost the embodiment of what Larson intended his life to be. I never knew the guy or even heard about him before this film but this film is a love letter to people who refuse to give up even if it may destroy our lives. And that is something I’m willing to do in order to be happy.

November 12, 2021.

It’s fun. Crack open a beer eat some popcorn and just have a goodish time watching two capable actors hold together this ridiculous plot. It is nothing to get to excited about but enough is here to be enjoyed. The hairnet line is actually pretty funny.

6/10

Director: Philip Barantini | Stars: Stephen Graham, Vinette Robinson, Alice Feetham, Ray Panthaki

Votes: 42,106

November 7, 2021.

I really hated the last part of the ending. Really just a tired trope we have seen time and time again. Endings like that we have seen done countless times. We have also seen endings done the other way but honestly this one just fell flat. Honestly it comes off more like we have no idea how to end it so here we go. But the rest of the movie, fire. Absolutely love this movie.

Votes: 97,037

November 5, 2021.

It is a sad as shit movie. It asked a lot of questions about life and death in the most heartbreaking ways. When you are at the end of your ropes it is easier to see what kept us alive. And I love this movie for outright making us wait for that moment.

November 5, 2021.

If I had a tier list for the Marvel movies this would fit perfectly in the C tier. Along with Iron Man 2, above the first Captain American, and below 15 other Marvel movies. I can understand some people will put this in their top 10 or even 5 but it is so basically average that I can never see myself watching this again. Only Shang-Chi this year is the only Marvel movie I have re watched. It is better than Black Widow but Black Widow there is much better than any other actors/superheroes here. It is not terrible but it is just a slog. Because Chile Zao was supposed to come in and deliver a knock out. Unlike anything we have seen from the Marvel studios. She is an Oscar winner. And not like she won an Oscar 30 years ago, she just won it this year. It is a shame but the movie has some cool moments and cool characters that I do wish had more development to be fully enjoyed.

Votes: 88,696

October 29, 2021.

Weak. It is not better than AOTD. It has a lot of fun visuals and action scenes but it is no match to the master Zack Synder is. When it comes to heist films I prefer my heist films to have at least one big score rather than multiple little ones. But I do like it enough for me to say it is enjoyable. A 7 is preserved for either a film with so much potential but ultimately fails (Eternals) or a good enough film that may not be great but with enough redeeming qualities to make it worth watching. That is this movie.

7/10

It is not his best but it a good effort to see what else he can do. Stylistically it is above and beyond his other films because he is allowing himself to do things he has never done before.

7.5/10

34. Dune (2021)

October 22, 2021.

I can see the appeal but for me it is only half of a movie. With some cool visual and practical effects that never get boring while watching it. But it is shallow and empty in some parts.

The best V/H/S since V/H/S/2. This thing is wild. It has an intense and out control tone to it that I just love. All of them do not land as perfectly as I would like but I saw redeeming qualities to them that I haven’t seen in other VHS movies. They all range from pretty good to freaking excellent. With the exception of the last one being way too long and not enough happening. Also it might be a little too confusing to focus on what was happening. It was weird just how lame that last VHS was filmed to a point where I couldn’t even enjoy it. I mean yeah 94 didn’t have the best cameras but at least some of the segments had good quality and I can actually see what was happening. The movie tho does have some surprises and it is a great excuse to get Shudder. 7/10

It was a great way to start the month of October. A real white knuckle taunt thriller that really pulls no punches. After a certain incident that happens in the beginning I knew this movie was playing around. It is not quite as good as I hope but like most people out of Sundance I went in blind. But I kept my eye on this film because I love road trip thrillers. Dead End, Wrong Turn, Southbound, and the list goes on. I wouldn’t mind adding this to that list. It does lose steam near the end but I still had a good time watching this. 7/10

45. The Guilty (2021)

63 Metascore

A demoted police officer assigned to a call dispatch desk is conflicted when he receives an emergency phone call from a kidnapped woman.

Director: Antoine Fuqua | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Riley Keough, Peter Sarsgaard, Christina Vidal

Votes: 148,615

October 1, 2021.

It is a straight forward remake that does retell the same story and while I love the 2018 The Guilty it still is the same story I love. So while I’m not enthusiastic about this remake it still is a movie that I can see it’s positives. It is a fun time and even tho they change the setting myself being from Southern Cali it was nice to see all the familiar freeways and street talk. It was also nice hearing other actors but they just add their voice so it doesn’t really add anything to the film, other than just going o yeah I now that voice.

But here we are with Jake G. Listen he is good here. This type of material demands an actor of his caliber to be this good. Without someone like him I can’t see this film hitting the same notes if it wasn’t him.

Other than it being a beat for beat remake I can see others being first introduced to this story and it will not have the same affect if this is your first experience. Because when I first saw that 2018 original I was floored. That movie knocked me the hell out. This movie is just fine. 7/10

I’m glad the people who saw this at Sundance kinda tempered my expectations. I don’t love it but I don’t hate it. It’s a fun ride that I couldn’t help but look away from. Nic Cage is not all Caged out like he has in the past but he is fun to watch. And at least the bombs planted on him don’t go to waste.

Sion Sono is one of the craziest and out there directors we have in the game. But this does feel more tamed than his usual fare. I mean compare this to Tag and you got an episode of Spongebob. I will be there again when Sion Somo makes another film but this is fine. It is stylized enough to make it appealing to the eye but I can see where the expectations fall when they do go to the Ghostland because they really don’t do anything with it. A couple of characters do have a moment to shine so when that climax doesn’t take place in the Ghostland kinda seems like they had to work that in because of change of location. That can honestly not be the situation but it does feel like it. 7/10

I cried. Yeah and you know what Victoria Justice may not be the greatest actress and she has had a lot of miss steps along with projects that just fall flat. But here I have to say she is by far the best I have seen her. It may be because she is not trying to be likable here in the first 10 minutes. Sometimes in these types of movies they really do make the lead super unlikeable or too much likable to the part where you can believe someone could be this nice. She manages to toe that line perfectly so when the movie goes for those heartfelt moments you actually feel for her character. The score does undercut a lot of the emotional pull that this could have gone for but it still hits. On that note tho when this ending hits gosh damn this thing hits. All the feels started coming in. And even before that some other moments did make me cry and it is thanks to Victoria and her co star Midori Francis who actually steals the show. But Victoria Justice is still the star here and no discredit to Midori who absolutely kills it but Justice brought here own A game and it is just a joy to see these be friends and be there for each other. I thought it made the whole movie enjoyable because their relationship is a huge chunk of why this movie works. Also I like the humor here. It is not super childish but they didn’t over do it with the ghost jokes which I did appreciate. I mean I knew this movie was going to wreck me once it ended and it did. So I can hate or even call a movie just okay for that. It is a very cute and harmless movie that I can see a lot of people be into. 7/10

But I did nod my head a few times during a couple of the songs and yeah it goes into adventure mode where characters get split up and have to venture off on their own quest. But the animation is bright here which is a plus because when a lot of movies go to Latin or Middle East countries they have the poor filter over the film and it is nice to not see it here. 7/10

I really miss messed up vampire movies. Daybreakers, 30 Days of Night, and Near Dark. That is not a jabbed at Twilight it is those are not my type of vampire movies that I vibe with. And I really like this action horror hybrid that takes place all in this plane. Netflix may not hit home runs and this is not a home run. If we are keeping the baseball metaphor than I would say it is a single maybe even a double. I would say it is a double for the ending and the fact that this is a story involving around a mother and son. With so much entertainment being about fathers and daughters it was nice to see a genre movie have a mother and son in the lead. So it is fun movie that may have too much back story for its own good but it is still a fun ride. 7/10

July 16, 2021.

While not the best in the trilogy I still like it enough to recommend it and say if you like the first two Fear Street movies then you will like this one. Something I forgot to mention in my other reviews is the editing. The first and second had good editing and needed it to keep the pacing going along with the back and forth between timelines. Plus the effect they use to tell Sarah Fier’s story I thought was a good way to introduce us into her world in the last movie.

So onto this movie the editing used during the 1666 scenes especially makes this some of the best filmmaking in the series. The acting is top notch here and I heard some complain that the accents are distracting and weird. But I thought they worked. This movie is actually two movies in one. Because it still has to wrap up the 1994 story line that wasn’t wrapped in the first movie. So the story telling technic used here to put us back into 1666 I thought was fascinating and so damn interesting. It is an origin story as it also serves as a sequel but the origin story is better than the sequel part.

Kiana Madeira who plays both Sarah Fier and Deena does a great job at playing Fier more than she does playing Deena. I don’t mind Deena along with Samantha as a couple or as characters. But for me when Kiana is playing Fier and when Olivia Scott Welch is playing Hannah Miller for me it makes the whole movie work. I love their relationship better and I don’t know man it just works far better in 1666 than it did in 1994. The directing, writing, acting, and editing are all top notch. Leigh Janiak is at the top of her game here and she delivers what could have been the best in the series.

The 1994 stuff here isn’t bad. It is a nice little wrap up to send off the trilogy but it would have been nice to have at least one scene between the Goode brothers in 1994 to really sell just how evil they are. It is just makes everything feel small. And our group of characters goes up against one true bad guy instead of where the story could have actually gone. We don’t even have a line or a reason why they split the two towns up. Yes you can put together that the reason why they made two towns in the first place is because they want to separate the citizens for the killers to slaughter. So one of them can be mayor and get one side of the town on your side. Kinda mirroring the situation set up in 1666 that started it all. All you really need is one scene or line dialogue to clear all that up.

It is the one main problem I have with this finale. But it is never boring and I was so damn invested to see how this ends. The big finale takes place inside a mall which could look similar from the last season of Stranger Things and the cinematography is extremely dark here that you barely see anything going on. But I had no problem with the “twist” because cmon how does no one see this shit coming.

I just really like this trilogy and Netflix continues to deliver on quality entertainment that stomps on other streaming services who try to do emulate the success that this trilogy has accomplished. Hulu and Prime might have all awards but holy crap this is quality entertainment that I have been missing.

36 Metascore

A rogue artificial intelligence kidnaps the son of famed basketball player LeBron James, who then has to work with Bugs Bunny to win a basketball game.

Director: Malcolm D. Lee | Stars: LeBron James, Don Cheadle, Cedric Joe, Khris Davis

Votes: 80,283 | Gross: $70.59M

July 16, 2021.

Yeah it’s pretty bad. But at least the actual Space Jam itself was fun enough for me to give it at least two stars. LeBron James is not an actor. But you know what good for him for delivering a movie that topped Godzilla vs Kong at the box office and an A- cinema score. So he can held his head up high for knowing that some people out there do like this movie.

As for myself this is just a useless sequel that you don’t need to waste your time with. The first one is fine too. I’m not in love with the first as much as the generation before or ahead or whatever does. So I really don’t have any connection to the first one or care enough if they ruin any type of legacy that was made before.

I just didn’t find any of the characters and I mean any of the characters or actors be any good. Even the lonely tones themselves didn’t seem all that interesting. Some gags are funny but nothing got past a chuckle. And this whole story about how Don Cheadle character has this beef with LeBron because he said his idea sucks to then trap him and his son in the server to play a basketball game. I mean I guess it works but man it just felt like a lot to get to the actual space jam. Because then you have to explain why the lonely toons all are separate which is a clever way to go to different properties but man those are over so quickly that it is just stock footage from the movie with inserted looney toons characters. Except with Lola Bunny. Her introduction is actually the best one.

Like I said the actual game itself is silly and a little bit of fun so I didn’t hate the whole movie. But man was this just a big waste of time. For an almost 2 hour movie and a good two thirds of the movie is just useless. None of the writing works between the characters along with the actors not really doing anything to make those lines believable. I mean hell LeBron is a basketball player and he can’t even make basketball talk all that interesting. All the family drama stuff is something you have seen before and done way better. The direction by Malcom D. Lee is nothing special and it has come out that he had to come in last minute because they didn’t have faith in the last director.

Which brings me to talk about Warner Bros as a whole studio. Because they are featured heavy here. Sure it was nice for them to do this day and date release strategy with all of their 2021 movie slate. But with everything coming out about them how they handle their movies and the countless decisions they keep messing up it makes it harder to defend them. This movie is not terrible but it reeks of corporate mandate checklist in order to to satisfy the higher ups instead of the audience. And some it seems it worked in their favor. But it was just not for me.

Yep it is as good as everyone says it is. I was a little afraid when people said that it was really good that people manage to skip out on Mandy and Color out of Space and only know of Nic Cage from his straight to dvd fair. So when an actual good movie comes out that is above a 5 people will praise it to be excellent. However it is a great character study and yes Nic Cage does his best role since Joe way back in 2013.

It’s fine. Karen Gillian is and forever will be a knock out no matter the property she is in. Lena Headey and her do make a good duo and whenever the both of them are on screen it makes the movie so much better. I mean the other performances are fine but they are exactly playing the part you think they would play.

Aside from the big library fight and a fight scene taking place in a dentist office the fight scenes are nothing too exciting to write home about. CGI blood and weak fight scenes can’t save or even distract from the cliche writing. But it is fine. It is exactly where it needs to be and I didn’t have to pay to watch it.

A real fun, quick, intense chriller that gets the job done. I’m a huge fan of horror/thrillers that take place in the cold. That is why 30 Days of Night is one of my favorite horror vampire movies. So when it comes to a sub-genre this is one of them. I honestly was genuinely surprised moment after moment in this movie. Maybe because I avoided the trailers and any reviews of this movie to actually see for myself if I would actually like this. And I do. Compared to something like Spiral which is the complete opposite this film does what that film tried to do but better. And I like Spiral for that crazy ending but I do see the problems. Here I feel like whatever problems people may have about this movie might be out of the writer/director’s hands. It doesn’t have the biggest budget, Megan Fox to me still hasn’t reach a status yet of being taken seriously as an actress, and a story like this being as bare bones as it is works in its favor.

Honestly Fox here is fine. I’m not fully convinced like some people that she is this revelation and she should be cast as a superhero. Not yet. I do like her at least picking a project like this because her name definitely made this film possible. With no other big stars at the level of Fox the supporting cast is also just fine but it is Fox that does shine with this material. Just a side note she is getting a lot more work and good for her which I was thinking she took a huge break from acting it seemed we may never see her again. But I’m glad and excited to see this new chapter in the Megan Fox comeback to acting she has chosen for herself and I’m glad directors and producers are giving her this opportunity to show she can be more than what Hollywood has previously casted her as. So I’m ready. 7/10
