Notable Francophone Actorsby ljredux | created - 31 Oct 2020 | updated - 9 months ago | Public
Francophone actors who piqued my interest with a focus on the up-and-comings and the recently arrived. Most are French and not so well known in the Anglosphere.
1. Rod Paradot
Actor | La tête haute
This 'kid' is actually 24 (at time of writing) and has a remarkable range. He made us all cry when he accepted his César for La Tête haute (2015), and he is destined to become a giant of French cinema.
Actor | Sauvage
Actor | Hors normes
Darren absolutely shone in Mon frère (2019). He appears to have been plucked from working class obscurity in Buttf***, France (Boulogne-Sur-Mer to be precise) and he only has three credits under his belt. How is it even possible for someone with such little acting experience to be this good?
Actor | L'été nucléaire
The raw talent that came out of nowhere for Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno (2017). Undoubtedly another fixture on the Cannes red carpet for many years to come.
Actress | La Révolution
Actor | Petit homme
Nocturama (2016) would not have worked so well without him. This Moroccan/French actor can transition between vulnerable and terrifying at the flick of a switch... but he'll happily do a Shirley Bassey number in drag along the way if you'd prefer him to take things more slowly.
Actress | Divines
She took us to hell and back in Divines (2016)... and then back to hell again. She has not been out of work since, and that's hardly surprising.
8. Ophélie Bau
Actress | Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno
Another gifted stranger we didn't see coming* when we watched Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno (2017).
* Well, actually I suppose we did. Haha.
This young Belgian actor is very active for someone his age (14 in 2007): starting his movie career in 2006 in Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt's 'Odette Toulemonde', he has also appeared, as Wallace, the one-eyed "cowboy" in Bensalah's odd western 'Big City' and in a movie entitled 'Noé', slated for release ...
This chap was born to play the flamboyant and utterly villainous Donatien de Montargis. When it finally happened in La Révolution, it was like a diktat from the theatre gods had been fulfilled.
Actor | Climax
Better known for his dancing than his acting prior to Climax (2018). It is abundantly clear he needs to focus just as much on the latter.
11. Coline Beal
Actress | La Révolution
That countenance. The gravity she brings to every role. Almost stole the show from Marilou Aussilloux in La Révolution.
12. Liam Pierron
Actor | La vie scolaire
I've only seen this kid in La Vie scolaire (2019). He's an impressive little actor who exudes more confidence than you'd expect from someone of his stature. The camera loves his face.
13. Kévin Mischel
Actor | Braqueurs
Another performer (like Romain Guillermic) known more for his dancing than this acting. His moody dancer role in Divines (2016) was very promising. Let's see this guy in more films please.
14. Syrus Shahidi
Actor | Amare amaro
Many will know him from Plan cœur, a TV drama that was frankly beneath him. This handsome French actor of Iranian descent has a lot of depth and is as at home in a romantic comedy as he is in a warzone.
15. François Civil
Actor | As Above, So Below
Admittedly it's those good looks that will carry him, but he's still a more than capable of actor destined for more action hero roles.
16. Soufiane Guerrab
Actor | Banlieue 13: Ultimatum
I overlooked Soufiane in the TV series Braquo and he irritated the hell out of me as the happy-chappy foil to Gérard Lanvin's role in the third series of Dix pour cent. So it was something of a surprise to discover how well he could pull off a serious, authoritative role in La Vie scolaire (2019). He has good range - of that there is no doubt.
Actress | Nocturama
Laure Valentinelli is an actress, known for Nocturama (2016).
Bottom of my list simply because I've only seen her in Nocturama (2016) and that is the only credit on her IMDb rating. She's a very distinctive looking actress and I felt she brought a lot to the film, so where is she? Hopefully back with us very soon.
