Lisa Henson, who witnessed the development of the original movie, promises a quantum leap forward in terms of action compared to the “stately pacing” of the 1982 film, due to the advances in technology as well as action director Louis Leterrier.
“He’s shooting puppets as they’ve never been shot before,” said Henson. “It’s very fun and challenging for the puppeteers to be shot using Steadicam or handheld. But Louis promised Netflix that the show would have a lot of action and dynamism and wouldn’t have the stately pacing of the original film. And we’re really able to execute on that.” Henson also revealed that they have largely steered away from computer generated imagery, but can digitally remove puppeteers from shots – something not possible in 1982 – which can create even more “seemingly impossible” shots. “It’s not CG but it is pure puppetry, which is exciting,” she added.
