Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (season 7) character dialogue by episode

by FreeKresge | created - 30 May 2020 | updated - 30 Nov 2022 | Public

This list ranks characters for each episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (season 7) by the amount of dialogue (measured in words) that they had in that episode. This list was inspired by an old web site, the The Hellmouth High's Line League (link via archive.org), which performed a similar analysis for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Like that site, this list will award medals to the top three finishers for each episode.

For each episode, the number of words that each characters speaks were calculated using transcripts available on the web. All characters with credited dialogue appear on the episode lists. If dialogue is credited to more than one character (i.e., two characters saying the same dialogue simultaneously), the dialogue is split evenly between the characters. This occasionally results in characters being credited with half words.

The data below are not perfectly accurate. For example, transcribing a bit of dialogue as "100%" will provide a slightly different result than if the dialogue were transcribed as "one hundred percent." Various sounds like a grunt or "um" or "uh-uh" or "hyah" may or may not be transcribed. Finally, I have noticed occasional errors in the transcriptions.

Subtitled words in languages other than English will count in dialogue totals.

Feel free to use the data below for your own projects, and leave a comment indicating where readers can see the results of the project.

Warning: This page contains spoilers at least as far as who does or does not appear in any given episode and how prominent that character is in the episode. It is advised that you do not look at the data from any episode that you have not already seen.

See season 1 character dialogue per episode for season one data, season 2 character dialogue per episode for season two data, season 3 character dialogue per episode for season three data, season 4 character dialogue per episode for season four data, season 5 character dialogue per episode for season five data, and season 6 character dialogue per episode for season six data.

People interested in the data on this page may also want to see another person's analysis of screen time by episode.

It looks like this LMD version of Coulson is a quick study. By providing the exposition, through narration, he had more dialogue than any character had in any of the past ten episodes.

Sousa did well in only his second appearance on the show. Deke got lucky with the weakest medal-winning performance since Elena in "Fun & Games."

Episode: The Totally Excellent Adventures of Mack and the D (2020)

TV-14 | 43 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

The ability to dominate an episode appears to be a FitzSimmons trait. The only characters to have a higher score than Deke did in this episode were his grandfather in "Inescapable" and his grandmother in "4,722 Hours" and in "Inescapable." Of course, Robot #3 has more dialogue than Deke's grandfather has so far this season.

On the other hand, Max-Headroom Coulson has moved passed Deke in "Out of the Past" as the weakest medal-winning performance since Elena in "Fun & Games."

8. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–2020)
Episode: After, Before (2020)

TV-14 | 42 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

With the Zephyr's time drive malfunctioning, the team hurtle toward disaster with Yo-Yo as its only hope; Yo-Yo must enlist the help of an old adversary to regain her powers.

This is May's first medal since the sixth season premiere and the closest that May has ever come to winning a gold. This is also her second highest total across the entire show. Elena won her first medal since the fifth season with her highest total across the entire show. Jiaying won her first medal since the second season, but, unlike the other two women, she has not been around much since then.

So far, men have swept the podium 35 times. This is the first time that women have swept the podium. In fact, this is only the eighth time that women won both gold and silver. As a bonus, Simmons pulled in a strong fourth place finish.

9. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–2020)
Episode: As I Have Always Been (2020)

A time storm ravages the Zephyr, propelling it toward destruction while simultaneously forcing Daisy and Coulson to relive their failed attempts to save the team.

This was a great episode for Fitz. He had 188 more words in this episode than he had in the previous ten episodes combined.

Characters vary in how well they can accumulate dialogue. Some characters, like May, are not so good at this. Two of the all-time greatest at hogging dialogue are Deke Shaw and John Garrett. For each of them, this is their worst episode of any in which they participated.

Across al 134 episodes so far, this is the ninth time that women have won both the gold and the silver medals.

This episode opened with the other characters screaming at Fitz. There may have been other issues, but I assume that the real reason was that they were upset that he spent the bulk of the season resting so that he would be fresh in time to snag the last gold medal of the series.

This was a good season for Daisy, who moved back to being the female lead of the show. It was a lousy season for all other women. Daisy received six medals. All other women combined received only six. Half of these came in "After, Before."

Despite the final episode, this was also a lousy year for Fitz. Mack did quite well despite not winning a gold all season.
