1 October: Incredibly wholesome and well-made with a lot of soul in it. Finally got to see it after postponing for years and some special occasion. Why not make this one special, though.

A multifaceted portrait of science fiction writer Stanislaw Lem.

Director: Adam Ustynowicz | Stars: Stanislaw Lem, Katarzyna Piotrowska-Ornatkiewicz

1 October: XIV Polish Cinema Days in Ukraine organized a few theatrical screenings and I was lucky to catch one. A really good and inspiring documentary on a celebrate sci-fi author Stanislaw Lem, who wrote quite a few spooky enough things for this to be a seasonal treat, too.

Votes: 10

1 October: Also XIV Polish Cinema Days in Ukraine. Also adapted from Stanislaw Lem. i must admit: concepts of time loops, time paradoxes et cetera terrify me quite a bit so it is also season-appropriate. A good short, although lack of ending, however appropriate, feels like an attempt at financing a feature-length adaptation of the book. Which should be cool, actually.

3 October: Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews (2011) (an always appropriate comfort food; also a bit of an addiction at this point)

6. Optica 1St: Yaksho ne vpiznayesh lyudey (2021 Video)

1 min | Short, Comedy, Horror

In the night a man approaches a woman on a bus stop with unknown intentions.

4 October: It's nice to just encounter an appropriately seasonal, horror-ish commercial out of the blue and out in the wild. Not much of those these days, so I cherish them.

5 October: Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews (2011). I kinda feel like I should make a room for a movie this episode reviews this year, too.

9. No Time to Die (2021)

PG-13 | 163 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

68 Metascore

James Bond has left active service. His peace is short-lived when Felix Leiter, an old friend from the CIA, turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

Director: Cary Joji Fukunaga | Stars: Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Rami Malek, Léa Seydoux

Votes: 444,230 | Gross: $160.87M

6 October: I was not sure that a James Bond film will fit in the marathon but a prologue is practically its own mini-slasher flick with surprising homages to Halloween (1978). Plus yeah, it evoked some of the feelings I needed from those covert superhero movies I've mentioned.

7 October: Good Bad Flicks (2010). That settles it: will be trying to fit Razorback (1984) into the marathon because I was looking specifically for hidden gems like that.

Directors: Stefan Ljungqvist, Marcus Thorell | Stars: Tim Earle, Garry Ferguson, Indy Neidell

Votes: 42

9 October: Well, yeah. After a year or two of considering I finally got to including video games in the Halloween Marathon. This one has some really nice gothic atmosphere and a decent gameplay that was way ahead of its time. It still kind of bored me though which is surprising. Might be the mood of the night and I might return to it. After all, it is set on an October night, it has all the check marks for a great horror experience... Speaking of checkmarks: "I could be a scary vampire! And turn myself into a bat (flap flap)!" (Garfield in Disguise (1985)). Apart from a ton of vampires, it also has a lot of bats as an atmospheric element in the central location.

21. Good Bad Flicks (2010– )
Episode: Party Line (2020)

Comedy, News

Good Bad Flicks calls up the Party Line. Directed by William Webb.

Star: Cecil Trachenburg

9 October: Good Bad Flicks (2010). I feel like my binges of the web-series stashes try to tell me marathon should get more exciting, because this episode mentions The Paul Lynde Halloween Special (1976). Now I need to see this.

9 October: Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews (2011). Now this one mentions Halloween decorations! And Paul Lynde, too!

23. Avtoportret (2009)

1 min | Short, Comedy, Drama

A motion picture portrait of inexplicably sad teenager.

Director: Mykola Yeriomin | Stars: Mykola Yeriomin, Yelena Krechetova

9 October: Me and my crew continue to dig up skeletons from my own closet. This short is unfinished and partially lost, but partial surviving guarantees we can watch it and makes some notes. "So what shall I be? What could I be? What shall I be?" (Garfield in Disguise (1985)).

24. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard: Cyboogie (2019 Music Video)

7 min | Comedy, Music, Sci-Fi

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard perform their song "Cyboogie" from the album "Fishing with Fishies" live in studio.

Director: Jason Galea | Stars: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Michael Cavanagh, Cook Craig, Han-Tyumi

9 October: A really cool live-in-studio, shot-on-video, retro-style music video. "I could be handsome or brave, a king or a slave [...], a robot" (Garfield in Disguise (1985)).

25. Barnes & Barnes: Fish Heads (1980 Music Video)

5 min | Comedy, Music

Surreal music video for the song "Fish Heads" by Barnes and Barnes. A man buys a fish head at the market. A homeless man approaches him. The man shows him the fish head. Absurdist song featuring real fish heads in novelty hats begins.

Directors: Bill Paxton, Rocky Schenck | Stars: Barnes & Barnes, Robert Haimer, Barry Hansen, Bill Mumy

Votes: 364

9 October: A terrific WTF of a music video, I can't believe this was actually on both SNL and MTV back in the day. Moreover, short-form directorial debut by Bill Paxton before watching his equally interesting feature length one.

26. Kazka pro hroshi (2017)

Director: Olesya Morgunets | Stars: Andrey Isaenko, Anastasiya Karpenko, Aleksandr Kobzar, Konstantin Kostyshin

Votes: 52

9 October: It's okay. It's a cautionary fairy tale with some season-appropriate spooky elements, as well as a pumpkin patch and autumn landscapes thrown in for a good measure.

27. Frailty (2001)

R | 100 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

64 Metascore

A mysterious man arrives at the offices of an FBI agent and recounts his childhood: how his religious fanatic father received visions telling him to destroy people who were in fact "demons."

Director: Bill Paxton | Stars: Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey, Powers Boothe, Matt O'Leary

Votes: 91,245 | Gross: $13.10M

9-10 October: Simply terrific and especially good considering it's a debut. It was odd to hear that superhero deconstruction is directly mentioned in the dialogue in a passing reference.

28. Kill It and Leave This Town (2020)

88 min | Animation, Drama, Horror

69 Metascore

Fleeing from despair after losing those dearest to him, the hero hides in a safe land of memories, where time stands still and all those dear to him are alive.

Director: Mariusz Wilczynski | Stars: Krystyna Janda, Andrzej Chyra, Maja Ostaszewska, Malgorzata Kozuchowska

Votes: 1,114

10 October: A very impressive, unique-looking, grossly beautiful feature directorial debut. A ton of unexpected cameos, equally unexpected Mikhail A. Bulgakov motifs which also constitute for another Garfield quote: "...And go as a big fat Halloween cat" (Garfield in Disguise (1985)).

29. Good Bad Flicks (2010– )
Episode: Exploring Strange Invaders - The 50s Sci-Fi that takes place in the 80s (2021)

Good Bad Flicks looks into the 50s sci-fi homage Strange Invaders. From director Michael Laughlin.

32. The Mutations (1974)

R | 92 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

A scientist experiments with crossing humans and plants, for which he uses his students.

Director: Jack Cardiff | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Tom Baker, Brad Harris, Julie Ege

Votes: 2,125

11 October: A really odd and interesting mixture of ideas and stylistic elements. At times reminding me of Universal Monsters, at times of contemporary comic books, at times of far more modern works. Great performances by Tom Baker (practically unrecognizable under all the special make-up) and Donald Pleasence, Michael Dunn and Willie Ingram are also really impressive. Bonus points for some really creative mutant ideas, odd experimental/jazz score and pleasant Autumn vibes.

37. Spadkoiemtsi Symfonii Nochi: Castlevania Advance Collection (2021 TV Movie)

114 min | Reality-TV, Talk-Show

A live stream of "Castlevania Advance Collection" bundle of Nintendo Switch re-releases and a chat with the audience.

Director: Vladyslav Papidokha | Star: Vladyslav Papidokha

11 October: A live stream, that I think fits nicely thematically.

13 October: Good Bad Flicks (2010). I think I just found a perfect candidate for "Or an alien creature goin' out on the town!" (Garfield in Disguise (1985)).

44. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

PG-13 | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

Director: Marc Webb | Stars: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Irrfan Khan

Votes: 701,567 | Gross: $262.03M

15 October: More of a reminder than an actual rewatch (roommates were binging the dilogy after Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), but it formed a pleasant mood, so what the heck. Also both movies have some horror elements in them.

45. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

PG-13 | 142 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

53 Metascore

When New York is put under siege by Oscorp, it is up to Spider-Man to save the city he swore to protect as well as his loved ones.

15 October: See above.

223 min | Talk-Show

A global live online event uniting DC Comics creations and adaptations with fans around the globe.

Stars: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, J.J. Abrams, Steve Agee, Asher Angel

Votes: 55

16 October: Unlike most people in a shockingly toxic YouTube chat (what on Earth happened and why there?) I really enjoyed the show for what it is, actually. A plethora of new trailers, a few bittersweet odes to finished and finishing DC-based shows, some cool interviews and behind-the-scenes insights... It were quite pleasant three-and-a-half hours.

47. Good Bad Flicks (2010– )
Episode: The Master Episode 2 - Out of Step (2021)

Comedy, News

Good Bad Flicks continues with the TV series The Master.

48. Z daleka widok jest piekny (2011)

77 min | Drama

It Looks Pretty From a Distance.

Directors: Anna Sasnal, Wilhelm Sasnal | Stars: Marcin Czarnik, Piotr Nowak, Elzbieta Okupska, Jerzy Lapinski

Votes: 140

19 October: On a first glance this arthouse drama doesn't seem like a good fit for a Halloween marathon, but it is a very unsettling and surprising thing. A really uniquely done and interesting movie. Sheer intensity and surrealism of some scenes and a unique and superb sound design reminded me at times of Eraserhead (1977).

51. After the Break (1998)

13 min | Short

A woman attempting to get over break up struggles to find a balance between forgetting and remembering the feelings.

Director: Annette Kennerley | Stars: Helen Paris, Lucky, Jan Haydn Rowles

20 October: Terrific short. It's not exactly horror, but situation and fear depicted are very relatable and land close to home in my particular case.

52. Ricochet (1991)

R | 102 min | Action, Crime, Drama

49 Metascore

A District Attorney is terrorized by the criminal he put away years ago when he was a cop.

Director: Russell Mulcahy | Stars: Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, Ice-T, Kevin Pollak

Votes: 20,355 | Gross: $21.76M

21 October: An exciting wildcard. It merits just enough craziness and gut-wrenching horror (of psychological kind) to merit the inclusion here and yet that is also an action film which has a lot in common with superhero mythos.

56. Red Sorghum (1988)

Not Rated | 91 min | Drama, History, Romance

When a leprous winery owner in 1930s China dies a few days after his arranged marriage, his young widow is forced to run the winery to make a living while contending with bandits, her drunkard lover, and the invading Japanese army.

Director: Yimou Zhang | Stars: Gong Li, Wen Jiang, Rujun Teng, Ji Liu

Votes: 9,860

21 October: Not a horror movie (again), but this landmark Chinese drama gets really gruesome at times, especially in the last twenty minutes. Very much impressive for a directorial debut.

60. Dollman (1991 Video)

R | 82 min | Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi

A hard-boiled intergalactic policeman lands on Earth, where he is thirteen inches tall.

Director: Albert Pyun | Stars: Tim Thomerson, Jackie Earle Haley, Kamala Lopez, Humberto Ortiz

Votes: 3,703

23 October: A case of inspired casting and directing somehow saving a plot that wouldn't made a modicum of sense if it tried. Tim Thomerson, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Halsey, Frank Doubleday and Frank Collison are all terrific character actors who really attempt something in this and so does Albert Pyun, despite there is nowhere near enough budget to make half of the implied things look serviceable. It's not a masterpiece, but it flies by, is greatly edited and highly entertaining. And also has some really impressive special-make-up effects, when we're not talking about Sprug's head.

61. Errors in Geography: Behind (2015 Music Video)

4 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

Unfinished music video by Errors in Geography puts the audience in the uncomfortable POV of a stalker, curiously followed by someone himself.

Director: Mykola Yeriomin | Stars: Errors in Geography, Yaroslav Kozak, Mykola Yeriomin

23 October: My very own unfinished music video unearthed for a special screening with a crew. Had some potential, to be honest, but at this point if I will do a video of this song it will be mostly a re-do, especially since most of the cool gruesome things there are in the song are not presented in the video's very loose strung narrative that remains from two unfinished days of shooting.

62. The Night Flight Orchestra: Burn for Me (2021 Music Video)

4 min | Music, Musical

A music video by The Night Flight Orchestra, in which the band enters a life of a blacksmith and a bum and turns it into a spectacular dance number.

Director: René u Valdes | Stars: The Night Flight Orchestra, Carl Johan Sillén, Fredrik Lexfors, Anna-Mia Bonde

23 October: I really like the throwback style of this music video.

63. XTC: Making Plans for Nigel (1979 Music Video)

3 min | Music

Add a Plot

Director: Russell Mulcahy | Star: XTC

Votes: 15

23 October: Russell Mulcahy was always slightly ahead of his time and a visionary.

64. Brazil (1985)

R | 132 min | Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller

84 Metascore

A bureaucrat in a dystopic society becomes an enemy of the state as he pursues the woman of his dreams.

Director: Terry Gilliam | Stars: Jonathan Pryce, Kim Greist, Robert De Niro, Katherine Helmond

Votes: 211,092 | Gross: $9.93M

23 October: A long overdue watch. At first really seems like overdoing it (at least visually), but leaves a great aftertaste.

65. Razorback (1984)

R | 95 min | Horror, Thriller

As a vicious wild boar terrorizes the Australian outback, the husband of one of the victims is joined by a hunter and a farmer in a search for the beast.

Director: Russell Mulcahy | Stars: Gregory Harrison, Arkie Whiteley, Bill Kerr, Chris Haywood

Votes: 7,856 | Gross: $0.15M

24 October: As mentioned early: had to cram this one in. Was not disappointed in the slightest. A superb and very impressive directorial debut and one of the more proper movies in the marathon this year.

68. Shadow and Bone (2021–2023)
Episode: A Searing Burst of Light (2021)

TV-14 | 52 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Unwilling to be separated from Mal, Alina hatches a plan to join him on a perilous expedition through the Fold. Kaz chases a lead on a lucrative job.

Director: Lee Toland Krieger | Stars: Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman

Votes: 4,561

25 October: Mildly impressive and rather pleasing visually.

69. The Paul Lynde Halloween Special (1976 TV Special)

Not Rated | 60 min | Comedy

Witchipoo and the Wicked Witch of the West give Paul Lynde three wishes for Halloween. KISS performs three songs. Florence Henderson sings a disco version of "That Old Black Magic."

Director: Sid Smith | Stars: Paul Lynde, Tim Conway, Roz Kelly, Margaret Hamilton

Votes: 434

26 October: Well, after five (!) different out-of-the-blue mentions I've got to see it and... I'm really not sure what to make of it. It's not bad by the standards of this production, but is rather random, slow, aged and tired. An interesting oddity, that's for sure, and of some cultural significance.

70. The Cinema Snob (2007– )
Episode: The Paul Lynde Halloween Special (2021)

TV-MA | 19 min | Comedy

The Cinema Snob takes us back to 1976, when legendary comedian Paul Lynde and his friends put on a hilarious Halloween variety show.

Director: Richard Kelly | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne

Votes: 849,293 | Gross: $1.48M

27 October: A pleasant rewatch on the 20th anniversary of the movie. Even though I saw it in September, too, it never gets old.

72. Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)

PG-13 | 97 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

49 Metascore

Eddie Brock attempts to reignite his career by interviewing serial killer Cletus Kasady, who becomes the host of the symbiote Carnage and escapes prison after a failed execution.

Director: Andy Serkis | Stars: Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris

Votes: 258,625 | Gross: $213.55M

27 October: It was pleasant enough not to get bored, but kind of lacked something. Quite possibly consistency and solid editing.

28 October: A solid, entertaining and wholesome puppet show Halloween Special, albeit the moral of the story is a bit clunky. I'm not sure especially that advice to smile at a grizzly bear is a good one.

74. The Last Halloween (1991 TV Movie)

30 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Four Martians crash-land on Earth in search of candy for their home planet.

Director: Savage Steve Holland | Stars: Rhea Perlman, William Hanna, Will Estes, Sarah Martineck

Votes: 121

28 October: Mildly wholesome, mildly impressive, mildly odd. Overall, I liked it.

75. Claymation Comedy of Horrors (1991 TV Short)

23 min | Animation, Short, Adventure

Wilshire Pig and Sheldon Snail discover a map to uncover Doctor Frankenswine's monster. All kinds of mishaps ensue in their quest.

Director: Barry Bruce | Stars: Tim Conner, Brian Cummings, Krisha Fairchild, Michele Mariana

Votes: 219

28 October: Now this one is very odd. In a good way, but still.

76. The Man They Could Not Hang (1939)

Unrated | 64 min | Crime, Horror, Sci-Fi

When Dr. Savaard's experiment in cryonics is interrupted by the short-sighted authorities, his volunteer dies, and he is condemned to death. He vows vengeance if he can survive his own hanging.

Director: Nick Grinde | Stars: Boris Karloff, Lorna Gray, Robert Wilcox, Roger Pryor

Votes: 1,964

29 October: A terrific little movie that is very much ahead of its time both genre-wise, reminding me of slasher movies and specifically Saw (2004). Whereas antagonist of latter is at least somewhat sympathetic it is really hard not to start rooting for a villain in this one which is both script's greatest strength and weakness at the same time. On one hand it leaves audience unsure as to what to think about the advancements of medicine and on the other pretty much convinced that stalling does not help either. Like I've said, ahead of its time, not least because eerily fewer things change. Of course, Boris Karloff pretty much carries the movie. He always does.

77. How to Carve Great Faces for Halloween (1990 Video)

30 min | Documentary, Short

'The Pumpkin Man' of Milwaukee Gordy Falk gives detailed lessons on how to carve your own Jack-o-Lantern.

Stars: Gordy Falk, Lindsay

29 October: Really liked this one. Especially Gordy Falk's knowledge of comic strips.

78. Best of the Worst (2013– )
Episode: Halloween Spooktacular 2021 (2021)

TV-MA | 95 min | Comedy, Talk-Show

A normal Best of the Worst episode except it's on a different set. This time, the gang is stuck in an Evil Dead-esque cabin to talk about three almost-movies, including one from the terrifying director of Shark Exorcist.

Stars: Jay Bauman, Josh Davis, Rich Evans, Mike Stoklasa

Votes: 37

30 October: Best of the Worst (2013) is usually a tad more entertaining, but this was kind of fine, too.

79. The Visitor (1979)

R | 108 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

The soul of a young girl with telekinetic powers and her mother become the prize in a battle between good ETs and evil ETs.

Director: Giulio Paradisi | Stars: Mel Ferrer, Glenn Ford, Lance Henriksen, John Huston

Votes: 4,531

30 October: This is a very interesting and oddly haunting movie. The scene where John Huston controls the stars kinda stuck with me.

80. Highway to Hell (1991)

An eloping bride is taken into Hell, and her fiancé must pursue.

Director: Ate de Jong | Stars: Patrick Bergin, Adam Storke, Chad Lowe, Kristy Swanson
