September Picks: The Movies and TV You Can't Miss8 of 25
"American Gigolo" | Series Premieres on Showtime on Sunday, Sept. 11
Plot: 15 years ago, a wrongful conviction sent Julian Kaye (Jon Bernthal) to prison. Now, as the former escort navigates life as a free man, a police detective (Rosie O'Donnell) uncovers a larger conspiracy as she investigates the murder that sent Julian to prison.
Our Take: As writer/director Paul Schrader enjoys a renaissance, it's no surprise to see some of his best-known movies get a contemporary makeover. The original became iconic for many reasons, from getting a full-frontal eyeful of Richard Gere to the Armani suits that Gere wore when he wasn't otherwise naked. Jon Bernthal is a proper casting choice to tell the story of Julian Kaye in long-form, and Showtime tends to specialize in this sort of unabashed crime drama. — Arno
