July Picks: The Movies and TV You Can't Miss28 of 29
"Paper Girls" | Premieres on Prime Video on July 29
Plot: Four young friends accidentally stumble into an intense time war and find themselves inexplicably transported to the year 2019. When they come face-to-face with their adult selves, each girl discovers her own strengths as together they try to find a way back to the past while saving the world of the future.
Our Take: Based on the graphic novel series by Brian K. Vaughn and Cliff Chiang, "Paper Girls" looks poised to deliver that perfect mix of sci-fi, action, and 80s nostalgia that "Stranger Things" nailed so beautifully. There is also a hint of "Yellowjackets" here insofar as we get to see both the girls from 1988 and their adult counterparts. That's where the comparisons stop, however, because the main storyline most likely focuses on the multigenerational time war between the "Old Timers" and "Teenagers" found in the comics. — Adrienne
