The use of AI in best picture contender “The Brutalist” recently grabbed headlines and ignited controversy, but it isn’t the only Oscar contender to use the advancing technology. High-profile films such as “A Complete Unknown,” “Dune: Part 2” and “Emilia Pérez” have also used AI in large or small ways, and the growing popularity has led the Motion Picture Academy to actively explore changing its Oscar submission requirements so that films would have to disclose their use of AI, Variety has learned.
The Academy currently offers an optional disclosure form for AI use, but Governors and Branch executive committees are now investigating how AI is used in each branch with an eye toward making disclosure mandatory in the 2026 Oscars rules, which are expected to be published in April. The Academy’s SciTech Council is working on recommended language, Variety has also learned.

Warner Bros. Discovery may not be ready to launch a free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) service of its own just yet, but the company is on the lookout for ways to boost its digital ad revenue. Its latest tactic is to add free movies to YouTube. Wbd has put more than 30 full-length films on the social video platform to stream at no cost, as long as you don’t mind putting up with a few commercials.
Key Details: Movies featuring Kevin Bacon, Chevy Chase, Robert De Niro, and other stars are streaming free on YouTube. None of the films are currently available to stream on the company’s platform Max. Wbd licenses plenty of content to Fast platforms, but has made no public progress on its own Fast platform. The perceived failure of the industry to produce a new roster of movie stars that match up to their celebrity predecessors, coupled with a certain unwillingness on the part of producers to back untested star-powered features within the “new economic realities of the post-streaming-war era,” has led to the same A-listers who emerged in the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s—Tom Cruise (62), Tom Hanks (68), Meryl Streep (74), Samuel L. Movie lovers, rejoice! Warner Bros. has quietly made 31 full-length movies available to stream for free on YouTube. This move allows viewers to enjoy classic and lesser-known films without a subscription, though they do come with ads unless you have YouTube Premium.
Over the years, Warner Bros. has experimented with different ways to make money from its vast catalog of films. It launched FilmStruck, a subscription streaming service, in 2018, but shut it down less than a year later. Since then, the company has focused on licensing movies to free, ad-supported platforms like Roku and Tubi.
Now, Warner Bros. is trying a new approach—releasing movies directly on YouTube. This move allows the studio to generate revenue through digital ads while making films more accessible to a wider audience.

Over the years, Warner Bros. has tried to monetize its catalog of older movies through different subscription streaming services, including FilmStruck — which it shut down less than a year after it launched in 2018.
Now, Warner Bros. Entertainment has quietly taken a new approach to bringing its content to YouTube to farm its film catalog for digital ad revenue.
Since the start of 2025, the company has released 31 movies on Warner Bros.-owned YouTube channels, all available for free. The movies include ads, unless you are a YouTube Premium subscriber. Warner Bros. has published a YouTube playlist with the free movies, available at this link.
The titles are varied and cut across genres, with some films on the list dating back decades. The movies include “Mutiny on the Bounty” starring Marlon Brando, “The Adventures of Pluto Nash” starring Eddie Murphy, “Oh, God!” featuring George Burns in the titular role, “The Mission” starring Robert De Niro,...

The Peacock streaming service has given a straight-to-series order for The Burbs, a contemporary series adaptation of the 1989 movie of the same name (which starred Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher). A few months ago, it was announced that Keke Palmer (Nope) is set to star in and executive produce the series – and now, Deadline has revealed that Palmer is being joined in the cast by Jack Whitehall (Jungle Cruise), Julia Duffy (Newhart), Paula Pell (Girls5eva), Mark Proksch (What We Do In The Shadows), and Kapil Talwalkar (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist).
Celeste Hughey is writing and executive producing the series. Set in present-day suburbia, The ‘Burbs follows a young couple, with Palmer playing the wife, returning to the husband’s (Whitehall) childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.

When Tom Hanks took on the role of Chuck Noland in Cast Away, he didn’t just have to deal with the challenges of being stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere. He was also facing the rise of Survivor that was quickly capturing the public’s attention. This reality show, which first aired in 2000, featured real contestants trying to survive on a remote island, and it became a huge hit.

Hanks, at the time, was concerned that the timing of his movie’s release would mean it would be overshadowed by Survivor. He worried that the popularity of the show might make the idea of a man stranded on an island feel like old news or even trivial.

NCIS could solve impossible crimes, chase down international spies, and keep fans hooked for decades – but there was one case even the show couldn’t crack. Michael Weatherly once revealed that despite its massive success, NCIS struggled to win over a certain audience. No matter how many action-packed chases or Dinozzo one-liners they threw in, this group just wouldn’t budge.

It wasn’t about plot twists or explosions, though; this was next-level stubborn. Even with all its TV dominance, NCIS had to accept that some viewers were simply immune to its charm. After all, even the biggest hits have their blind spots.

Adrien Brody never looked like a leading man.
Casting agents and executives made that message clear over and over again throughout his three-plus decades as a working actor. “Overtly,” Brody, 51, says. “But, yeah, it was often told to my representatives, and my representatives would share that with me.”
Even after nabbing the best actor Oscar in 2003 at the age of 29 for “The Pianist” — making him the youngest winner ever in the category — he never quite maintained A-list status.
While a few directors came calling with the occasional studio lead role, like Peter Jackson for his $200 million 2005 tentpole “King Kong” and Nimród Antal for the 2010 “Predators” sequel, those were the exceptions. Yes, he’s booked five movies with Wes Anderson since joining the director’s repertory company in 2007’s “The Darjeeling Limited,” but other major roles have eluded him, even while peers such as Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio...

Set years before George Michael’s arrest and inspired by the bathroom raids that provoked a moral panic in Mansfield, Ohio, in 1963, Carmen Emmi’s Syracuse-set thriller Plainclothes offers a unique twist on the coming-out genre. Cruising the food court and men’s room at a local mall, young undercover officer Lucas (Tom Blyth) lures men into stalls, getting them to expose themselves before they’re taken down by a cop (John Bedford Lloyd) who is not above slapping a fellow officer on the butt in the gym, a thread the film never quite pulls fully at.
Told in a non-linear structure, the thriller oscillates between two parallel timelines: one focusing on a New Year’s Eve party with Lucas’ controversial uncle after the death of his father; the other as he conducts police work at the mall. In the earlier timeline, Lucas becomes infatuated with Andrew (Russell Tovey), a...

NCIS star Michael Weatherly once confided that he was sick of the roles he was offered before he was cast as Tony Dinozzo. But the long-running procedural helped him discover a passion for acting that he didn’t have before despite his years in the business.

Weatherly already had quite the screen resume before he was recruited for Mark Harmon’s NCIS team. One of the projects he featured in prior to the hit show was Dark Angel, where he played hacker Logan Cale. Although he felt the series failed due to creative decisions, it wasn’t the only notable project he was in. Weatherly also had bit roles in Charmed and Ally McBeal as well. Yet, none of those television shows offered Weatherly what he was really looking for in a role.

A lot of different elements went into making Dumb and Dumber a huge hit — from the burgeoning superstardom of Jim Carrey, to the existence of industrial strength laxatives.
But as the film’s directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, recently told The Guardian, one of Dumb and Dumber’s key contributors was, in fact, legendary director John Hughes. They just weren’t allowed to tell anyone at the time, thanks to an ill-defined legal threat.
According to the Farrelly Brothers, the project originated with Hughes, who was “planning a movie called Ski Nuts about two dumb guys in Aspen. The writer, director, and stars of "Forrest Gump" regroup after 30 years for a new high-concept drama. You can imagine this premise being easily sold to salivating studio execs. And yet, Robert Zemeckis' "Here" was an abject critical and commercial dud when it debuted in November 2024. What happened? Well, according to critics, the movie is just bad. More specifically it is, according to The Times' Kevin Maher, "like watching the Sims get dementia." What does that mean? You'll have to watch the movie to find out, which you can now readily do over on Netflix.
If, out of pure curiosity, you do decide to stream Zemeckis' misfire, you won't be the only one. Netflixers are currently giving the ill-fated drama a modest reprieve over on the streamer, with "Here" working its way up the most-watched charts. The cultural standing of horror movies has changed over the years, though it remains one of the most controversial genres. During the 1970s, when gory slashers first burst on the scene, many saw the genre as pure schlock, or even worse, something sinister and immoral. In the 2010s, the perception of horror changed with the advent of the "elevated horror" genre and the success of A24's slate of sleek, supposedly more intellectual horror movies.
And yet, horror still isn't widely recognized as a prestigious or award-worthy genre. Horror actors rarely get nominated for big awards in these films, with Demi Moore's surprising Golden Globe win for the nauseating body horror movie "The Substance" proving an exception to that rule. That's probably why, when you think of beloved or respected Hollywood actors, horror usually isn't the first genre that comes to mind, but maybe it should be.
Everyone's got to start somewhere,...

That's probably why, when you think of beloved or respected Hollywood actors, horror usually isn't the first genre that comes to mind, but maybe it should be.

If you’re looking for award-contender movies to watch on streaming or on-demand video this weekend, we have some suggestions. Our list includes an Oscar-nominated top pick that recently became available for home viewing, three other new releases on streaming or VOD (one of which is an Academy Award nominee), and a recommendation of a past Oscar nominee that would make for a nice double feature with the top pick.
Top pick: Sing Sing
There aren’t a lot of uplifting prison dramas, so Sing Sing is a unique movie. The true-life drama is a three-time Academy Award nominee: Best Actor for Colman Domingo, Best Original Song for “Like a Bird” by Abraham Alexander and Adrian Quesada, and Best Adapted Screenplay, with screenplay by Clint Bentley and director Greg Kwedar and story by Bentley, Kwedar, Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, and John “Divine G” Whitfield. Maclin plays himself in the film,...

Netflix is kicking 2025 off in decidedly low-key fashion. By its standards, the streamer’s lineup of film originals in January is surprisingly slight. There are still a few Netflix-exclusive movies worth recommending this month, though, and the service is making up for its slim pickings of originals with a batch of exciting streaming acquisitions that is practically bursting at the seams with modern classics from the past 30 years.
In other words, there are still plenty of options for anyone out there looking to stream the first month of this new year away. For help choosing which movies to watch, here are TheWrap’s picks for the best new movies on Netflix in January.

The official Saturday Night Live YouTube channel is stocked with hundreds of sketches from the show’s five decades of comedy but only one has passed the magic 100-million view mark. Matt Foley screaming at David Spade and Christina Applegate? Nope. Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell rapping about Lazy Sunday? Not even close.
To keep you in suspense just a little longer, let’s count down the top five…
5 Star Wars Undercover Boss: 67 Million Views 4 Spider-Man Kiss: 73 Million Views 3 Hermione Growth Spurt: 76 Million Views 2 Black Jeopardy with Tom Hanks: 83 Million Views 1 Porn Teacher: 106 Million Views
The most viewed video on SNL’s YouTube channel is Amy Schumer’s “Porn Teacher” sketch? Really?
“Can you believe that?” the comic asked Howard Stern this week. “The most viewed SNL sketch of all time is me and Kyle Mooney.”
At first, Schumer said, she was shocked to hear that the sketch ended up in the top slot.

Veteran director Steven Spielberg is many things but a lover of criticism, he can never be. Although there are some who would accept some constructive criticism, for Steven Spielberg’s 1998 war movie, the case seems different.

Starring Tom Hanks and Matt Damon in leading roles, Saving Private Ryan was a heartbreaking and patriotic reminder of what war can do to people. However, critics hated the fact that Spielberg mixed cultures and ethnicities in places where they allegedly shouldn’t be.
Why critics slammed Saving Private Ryan?
Although the film received great reviews and critical acclaim, a minority of fans and critics pointed out that there were people from different ethnicities and cultures fighting with the U.S. soldiers.

Comcast executives spent much of Thursday’s post-earnings conference call on the biggest news of the last few months, its upcoming cable spinoff, with president Mike Cavanagh calling a new company comprised of most NBCUniversal cable networks as “a free-standing, strong collection of businesses with lots of cash flow generation capability for many years to come, good market position and great focus.”
The spinoff is led by Mark Lazarus, with the roster of executives fleshed out earlier this month. But many details are still to come.
“When they’re ready to talk about their strategy, which will be at some point down the road, we’ll come back,” Cavanagh told analysts who pressed for details. However Lazarus and his team take that strategy forward, “I’m optimistic that [it] creates good opportunities for our shareholders.”
NBCU’s remaining media and entertainment businesses will be run by Donna Langley, chair of NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios,...

Imagine for a second—just imagine if the role of Iron Man had gone to the ever-iconic Tom Cruise. Would the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) still be the juggernaut it is today? Would the MCU have reached the same heights, or would it have been a different journey altogether?

Back when Marvel Studios was looking to launch its universe, casting the iconic Tony Stark was no small feat. Initially, the name that kept coming up for the role was none other than Tom Cruise. The Hollywood staple known for his action chops and A-list star power seemed like a safe choice. After all, this was the guy who had already conquered the box office with Top Gun and Mission: Impossible.
At the time, Cruise was undeniably the safer bet, with a proven track record of blockbuster hits, while Robert Downey Jr....

A handful of famous actors, including Michael J. Fox, turned down the chance to play Sam Wheat in 1990’s Ghost opposite Demi Moore before Patrick Swayze landed his career-changing role. Fox later told Whoopi Goldberg he made a huge mistake by passing on the movie — “I’m a fucking idiot.”
Paramount turned to other actors as well, reports Far Out. Harrison Ford. Tom Hanks. Kevin Bacon. Even Paul Hogan, hot of Crocodile Dundee, was considered. But one guy who never got a shot? The studio’s biggest movie star: Eddie Murphy. The comedian’s films brought in more than $1.3 billion during the 1980s.
“I deserved for them to come to me first,” Murphy says in the book Off the Record, excerpted by Newsweek in 2007. “That’s how you treat your biggest star. You give him the opportunity to say he’s not interested. I would have been interested in doing Ghost.
