Carla Gugino's new role as the villainous stepmother in Lisa Frankenstein is a departure from her usual horror projects with Mike Flanagan. Gugino's performance as Janet proves she can tackle more villainous roles, potentially in upcoming Stephen King adaptations by Flanagan. After her success in Flanagan's projects, Gugino's turn as Janet in Lisa Frankenstein showcases her range as an actress in the horror genre.
Carla Gugino’s new movie sees her in a completely different role from what she typically plays in Mike Flanagan's horror films and TV shows, which is an exciting change despite how difficult it may be to get used to. After hit roles in movies like This Boy’s Life, the Spy Kids franchise, and Sin City in the 1990s and early 2000s, Gugino had a successful career shift in the mid-2010s as she began taking on more horror roles. Constellation, a new sci-fi series on Apple TV+, has potential for a second season if it avoids cancelation like Netflix's Oa. Critical ratings may not match other hits on Apple TV+, but Constellation draws in viewers with innovative sci-fi ideas. Thematic parallels with Netflix's Oa show similarities in interdimensional travel, identity themes, and character depth.
The new sci-fi series Constellation serves as a reminder of Netflix's 5-year-old cancelation mistake that Apple TV+ should try avoiding. Created by Peter Harness, Constellation is another addition to Apple TV+'s repertoire of diverse and innovative science fiction dramas. A Stephen King horror story about a malevolent (sort of) doll almost sounds like something that could've been written specifically for James Wan to turn into a movie. But while the filmmaker behind "Saw," "Insidious," "The Conjuring," and "Malignant" is indeed involved in adapting "The Monkey" -- a short story King wrote for Gallery magazine in 1980 before later including it in his 1985 collection "Skeleton Crew" -- for the screen, he's only lending his services as a producer.
Instead, "The Monkey" is being written and directed by Osgood "Oz" Perkins, son of "Psycho" actor Anthony Perkins and the mind behind such creepily atmospheric and inventively stylized horror pictures as "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House," and "Gretel & Hansel". Osgood Perkins is also currently riding high thanks to the buzz around "Longlegs," his upcoming occult serial killer horror-thriller that boasts one of the most intriguing trailers in recent memory.

Netflix’s true crime series Homicide: New York’s first installment, “Carnegie Deli Massacre,” opens with the brutal murders of Jennifer Stahl, Charles “Trey” Helliwell, and Stephen King. The episode features NYPD Lieutenant Roger Parrino; Barbara Butcher, the second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan; and retired NYPD Det. Irma Rivera. The case plagues these veteran law enforcement professionals enough to revisit the evidence. The deaths seem to have weighed heavily on producer Dick Wolf too. “Tragedy on Rye,” a season 14 episode of his signature show Law & Order, is based on the tragic incident.

What does it mean to be a final girl? Can it really be as straightforward as staying alive until the sun rises? Picking up the knife, the machete, the abandoned gun and putting down the killer? Or is it something more? Could it mean stepping into a position of power and fighting for something larger than yourself? Or risking your life for the people you love? Could it be that anyone who bravely stands against an unstoppable force has final girl blood running through their veins?

David Dastmalchian, who stars as troubled late-night talk show host Jack Delroy in Late Night with the Devil, says Heath Ledger's Joker inspired his role in the horror film.
"The Cairnes brothers sent me a bunch of footage that they accumulated of Don Lane," Dastmalchian told The Hollywood Reporter. "If you're not familiar with Don Lane, he was the Johnny Carson of Australian television. He was an American who lived in Australia, and he became the host of this huge syndicated talk show. He did this famous interview with Tom Waits, and a lot of people think Heath Ledger took inspiration from it for his portrayal of the Joker. [The likelihood of shared inspiration] is pretty cool, and it's also the cyclical nature of being a storyteller and the strange path that it's followed," Dastmalchian added of the shared inspiration between his character and Ledger's Batman villain.

When Stephen King praised Constellation as "just about perfect," creator Peter Harness was both shocked and honored by the high praise. King's review highlighted the show's nail-biting suspense and believable portrayal of space, earning it a unique badge of honor. Constellation's blend of real science and suspenseful sci-fi concepts keeps viewers questioning reality, building an eerie and tense series.
Constellation creator Peter Harness reacts to Stephen King's glowing review of his show. The Apple TV+ sci-fi thriller follows the harrowing story of an astronaut, Johanna “Jo” Ericsson (Noomi Rapace), who survives an incident on board the International Space Station. However, her nightmare isn't over as, upon returning home, she realizes her life on Earth appears to be altered. The series has received largely positive reviews from critics for its strong performances and eerie premise, but one review particularly stood out to Harness.

Buried deep within Variety’s weekend box office report is a rather eye-brow-raising stat. Late Night With the Devil, which is proving to be one of the biggest breakout indie hits in recent memory, is reportedly on track to gross an estimated $666,666 at the box office today. The final numbers aren’t in, but what a ghoulish, perhaps even unholy, surprise this is. It’s the kind of publicity you can’t buy, and to be fair, Variety’s report might be off a bit. When I put together our own box office report here on JoBlo, I tend to follow the numbers put out by Paul Dergarabedian at Comscore, and so far, he hasn’t listed Late Night With the Devil’s daily gross. It’s an indie flick, and the reporting from IFC might be delayed, given their more limited resources. Usually, box office analysts can crunch numbers...

Late Night with the Devil has earned about $666K at the box office for Sunday, a number that's especially bizarre given the horror movie's plot.
An indie horror flick starring David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad), Late Night with the Devil arrived in theaters following high praise from Stephen King and a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score with its early reviews. For the weekend box office, the film landed in the No. 6 spot, but what's most peculiar is the total it pulled in on Sunday. Per Variety, Late Night with the Devil made $2.8 million for the weekend, with $666,666 of that earned on Sunday. It's a record-breaking haul for the film, which sets the new record as the best opening weekend for an IFC Films release, surpassing the $826.7K haul pulled in by Watcher in 2022.

The name "Pennywise" is enough to stir horror in the stoutest of people, and thanks to the depiction of the character by two exceptional actors, that horror has now spread across generations. Tim Curry, last seen playing the Narrator/Criminologist in The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again (a remake of the classic film that starred Curry as Dr. Frank-n-Furter), scarred thousands of people with his portrayal of Stephen King’s Pennywise in the 1990 It TV miniseries. Bill Skarsgård scarred thousands more with his Pennywise in the 2017 It movie and its 2019 sequel (and is currently scarring thousands more with the trailer for the upcoming The Crow remake starring Skarsgård proving highly divisive) . Two actors that brought different things to the character. Different, evil things that made each depiction unique and iconic. But there can only be one definitive portrayal, so who will it be - Curry,...

The Joker is considered by many to be the greatest villain with respect to not only Batman, but all of DC, or even the superhero industry. Some even go to the length of calling him the most iconic villain in all of fiction. He is a villain so legendary, that his maniacal laugh and twisted sense of humor are instantly recognizable.
A still from Batman: The Animated Series

Write for yourself, not the fans: Jonathan Nolan's approach to creating the Fallout series is rooted in self-expression. Fans misunderstood: Nolan's focus on quality storytelling over fan-service is key to success in video game adaptations. Nolan's passion shows: Ignoring fan demands allows for a more genuine adaptation that captures the essence of Fallout.
The world of video game adaptations has seen a welcome shift in quality over the past few years. The dreaded 'Video Game Curse', which plagued adaptations since 1993's Super Mario Bros., has seemingly been broken, and the horizon looks clear for the packed slate of upcoming shows based on beloved gaming franchises. One such series is Prime Video's Fallout, created by Jonathan Nolan (Westworld).
The moment Nolan's name was attached to the project, fans of Bethesda's acclaimed video games felt a wave of hope wash over them, thanks to Jonathan Nolan's phenomenal filmography as a writer.

King's favorite TV work of his is the 1999 miniseries Storm of the Century, which he specifically wrote for television. Storm of the Century is praised for its terrifying villain, unpredictable story, and isolated island setting. Despite not being based on a King novel, the miniseries is lauded for its fear-driven plot and impressive storytelling.
Stephen King has many works that have become TV shows, but his favorite is one that aired 25 years ago - and isn't based on any of his existing novels. The prolific horror author has had many of his works adapted into TV series, giving the original works plenty of room to develop over time. This includes classics like the 1990 miniseries adaptation of It, and an upcoming The Dark Tower show, based on King's series of the same name.
However, the horror icon has also been involved in works that are not directly based on his novels.

Creator Peter Harness breaks down how the multiverse works in Constellation and teases what the ultimate cause of it is in the show. Upon arriving on Earth, though, Jo finds that not everything is as she remembers, with some explaining it away as a form of memory loss, while others are seemingly covering up a major conspiracy.

Stephen King cautiously praised Apple TV's Constellation, calling it "nail-biting and believable." Constellation evolves from a space survival story to a mystery in an alternate reality, diving into complex concepts. The show's finale is eagerly anticipated to tie up loose ends and deliver a strong conclusion, leaving viewers intrigued.
Stephen King recently shared his opinion about a new Apple TV+ show, and before the show's finale, King's review is starting to make a lot of sense. Stephen King is at his best when he's writing about his fears as a father. With "The Shining," he took his alcoholism and made the lead Jack Torrance into a worst-case scenario, someone who destroys his family (and potential writing career) because he lets his addiction consume him.
Then there's "Pet Sematary," which is all about the primal fear any parent has of their child dying. The Creed family moves to rural Maine, in a house right next to a lethal road frequented by trailer trucks. After the family cat Church becomes roadkill, Dr. Louis Creed and neighbor Jud Crandall bury the cat in an ancient Mi'kmaq burial ground. Church returns, alive but worse for wear. When Louis' toddler son Gage is killed by another oncoming truck, he can't resist the temptation to bring his son back. If there's anything that could inspire a normal person to play Dr. Frankenstein,...

Killer clowns are ever-present in the horror genre, from Stephen King's Pennywise to Terrifier's Art the Clown. However, there is one horror clown who is more brutal than his much more well-known counterparts, the titular clown in the 2012 horror movie, Stitches. Played by comedian Ross Noble, Stitches is less exaggerated than other horror clowns and is instead a man totally disillusioned with his profession. This doesn't hold him back from inflicting extremely gory deaths on a group of teenagers though. In fact, the deaths in Stitches aren't just gory, they're innovative and thematic, and allow Stitches to feel like a well-thought-out and realized antagonist. The movie grapples with the balance between gore and humor with small nuances, and it is this attention to detail that really lets the brutality of Stitches hit home. As a whole, Stitches can feel a little disjointed, and the moments without the titular clown are fairly unimaginative teen interactions.

The 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel "It" may be best known for Tim Curry's performance as Pennywise, who made an entire generation seriously terrified of clowns, but it would be nothing without the heart and soul of the Loser's Club. In the 1950s, a group of misfit kids growing up in Derry, Maine are brought together, partially because they don't belong anywhere else, but also because they happen to be targeted by the malevolent force that haunts their town, stealing and murdering its local children. Together, they have to face off against Pennywise to stop the killing once and for all. That's what they think, anyway. But despite defeating Pennywise as children, they're forced to return to Derry as adults and once again confront the terrors of their youth.

Nestled away amidst horror films of the past two decades, 1408 remains one of the most underrated horror films of all time. Adapted from a Stephen King story to the big screen by director Mikael Hafstrom, 1408 entails classic elements of thrill and terror that are made unique by the film's psychological twists and centered misc-en-scene. Despite having been released in 2007, the film has avoided the Hollywood effects of aging and seems like a project that could have been made today. The cinematography, writing, and production are timeless, the scares are endless and the performance given by leading man John Cusack should be considered one of his best. 1408 is the perfect film for those who enjoy the paranormal, the confusing, the thrilling, or even just a well-made movie. So, without further suspense (even though King loves it), here's why 1408 is an underrated, great horror feature.

Sydney Sweeney has always had a knack for playing crazy characters, which made her experience filming Euphoria so much fun, as she loved the challenging and crazy aspect of Cassie Howard. And with her recent feature Immaculate, Sweeney, who has made some really interesting career choices lately, has finally jumped into the genre she adores the most.
Following her commitment to Immaculate, it comes as no surprise that she has been a lifelong horror fan, who once dreamt of helming crazy roles along the likes of Hannibal Lecter and Jack Torrance.

It doesn't matter what anyone says, Stephen King is one of our greatest living authors. In a world where some may see him as overrated and others may take him for granted, the record has to be set straight. King is the King. That doesn't take away from the fact that he's a total stickler for adaptations of his books! He has always encouraged filmmakers to bring his works to life, but that doesn't spare them from being criticized if he sees fit. Everyone knows how he feels about The Shining, but don't forget about disasters like The Dark Tower. You can't disrespect the king.

Night Swim and Lisa Frankenstein have secured streaming release dates after lackluster theatrical runs. In 2009, Stephen King asked his fans what they’d rather get first — a sequel to The Shining or a new Dark Tower book. They voted for Shining sequel, but the Dark Tower book came first anyway. That book? The Wind Through the Keyhole, a (relatively) trim tale that revisits our favorite gunslinger and his ka-tet in between the events of Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. In it, Roland spins an eerie tale from his youth over a roaring fire as a starkblast rages outside. As far as Dark Tower stories go, it’s a cozy one.
Join The Losers’ Club‘s Randall Colburn, Dan Caffrey, and Dan Pfleegor as they palaver about its nesting story structure, fairy tale detour, and emotional peek at a young gunslinger in the throes of grief. More importantly, was this book the one that best presaged King’s drift towards crime fiction?...

When it comes to horror, you can always rely on Stephen King. Whether you're looking for something supernatural or gruesome body horror, his vastly diverse body of work has got you covered. Not only is he a hugely successful writer, he has made a huge contribution to visual media with many of his works translated for the screen. Despite some adaptations deviating from the source material, Stephen King movies almost always manage to maintain the essence of the writer. However, every so often, the original work is so gruesome that the filmmakers have to make changes. This is what happened to one of the most famous scenes in the author's repertoire, Misery. Misery is one of the best Stephen King adaptations, and the most iconic moment is when Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) uses a wooden block to break Paul Sheldon's (James Caan) ankles. Considering how visceral the moment is in the movie,...

One of the most acclaimed horror movies of the year opens this week: "Late Night with the Devil," a mockumentary from filmmakers Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes, starring David Dastmalchian. Dastmalchian has built a solid career as a supporting character actor in films like "The Dark Knight," "Prisoners," and "Dune," but "Late Night with the Devil" gives him the chance to shine in a lead role. The actor plays Jack Delroy, host of the late-night 1970s "Tonight Show"-like talk show "Night Owls with Jack Delroy."
The film takes the form of footage from one of Jack's shows — specifically a show that aired on Halloween night in 1977. Desperate to improve his slipping ratings, Jack has put together a special episode where his guests include a parapsychologist (Laura Gordon) and her patient, a teenage girl named Lilly (Ingrid Torelli). JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way.
For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.
