Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.
Tania Hussain (Collider) exclaimed: “While Awkwafina has shown audiences a whacky, often one-dimensional side in some of her roles like the sitcom ‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,’ she is able...

NBCUniversal Chair Donna Langley will be honored with the 2024 Kering’s Women in Motion Award at the Cannes Film Festival, celebrating, according to Kering and Cannes “a lifelong career committed to steadfast leadership and the fostering of a more inclusive industry that has helped shape diversity both in front and behind the camera.”
Langley is coming off a fantastic year. NBCUniversal topped the box office charts and was the big winner at the Oscars, thanks to Oppenheimer‘s sweep. Announcing the prize, Kering and the Cannes festival called her a “singular force in the business [who] has gained global recognition through her remarkable career supporting the creation of films that capture the cultural zeitgeist and provide a platform for women and diverse voices globally.” Langley, they said, “has been part of the vanguard of change in Hollywood, challenging the status quo and proving that inclusive casting, hiring and storytelling is smart business.

Cinema for Gaza, a group launched by a small group of female filmmakers and film journalists, has successfully raised more than $315,000 to support medical aid for the civilian population in Gaza.
A celebrity auction, organized by Cinema for Gaza, and supported by the likes of Tilda Swinton, Annie Lennox, Joaquin Phoenix, Spike Lee and Guillermo del Toro, raised some $316,778 (£254,297) for Medical Aid for Palestinians (Map), a U.K.-based charity that provides on-the-ground medical support, from sterile water to cancer drugs, for those on the Gaza Strip. The celebrities donated personal items — from signed film posters to personal Zoom chats to, in the case of Lennox, the handwritten lyrics to her Eurythmics hit “Sweet Dreams” — to be sold off to the highest bidder. (Lennox’s lyrics sheet was the top seller, with a bidder paying $26,222 for the piece of pop music history).

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

If you’ve been anywhere near a television in the last couple of years, odds are you’re already familiar with Dominic Burgess. The British actor broke through in 2017’s “Feud: Bette and Joan” as actor Victor Buono, before popping up in a number of memorable appearances — playing everything from serial killer John Wayne Gacy in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” to an accident-prone man on “The Good Place” whose hideous red boots create an existential crisis for Chidi.
Most recently, the actor has been stealing scenes as Grayman, the stylist to the grande dames (including Kristen Wiig and Allison Janney) on Apple TV’s “Palm Royale” — and as Hamish Moss, a director on the rise on “American Horror Story: Delicate.” That is, he was on the rise before the April 3 episode, in which Moss met a gruesome death at the hands of Kim Kardashian’s devilish publicist.

Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016. Since then she has worked primarily in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as Captain Marvel and in the “Fast and Furious” film series. The actress hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room” until now.
She stars in “Lessons in Chemistry,” the Apple TV+ show based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect. Larson injects Elizabeth with intelligence and heart but also zip, determination, and frustration in a well-rounded performance.

For a short bit there, it seemed like Ezra Miller’s career was going to be torpedoed thanks to numerous controversies. Yet, Miller managed to stay on board The Flash. Ok, so that was yet another flop for DC but it showed there was still (some) support for Miller within the industry in one way or another. But now, it might truly be over, as Invincible, has quietly removed Miller from the series. The actor had been previously cast as D.A. Sinclair. So where does that leave the troubled star?
While Ezra Miller voiced the mad scientist with a penchant for turning people into obedient cyborgian zombie soldiers called “Reanimen” in the first season, Eric Bauza has now taken over the role. Miller only voiced the character in one episode (“You Look Kinda Dead”) so it’s really not that big of a loss for Invincible. But it does...

Jodie Foster is having a good year. The two-time Oscar winner returned to the attention of the academy for the first time since 1995 with a nomination for “Nyad.” Now, she and showrunner Issa López have revamped HBO’s flagging “True Detective” with the best entry since the show’s first season.
“True Detective: Night Country” stars Foster as an acid-tongue, spiky police chief who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Playing a detective will naturally harken viewers’ minds back to her turn as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar (“The Accused” being the other). It’s her meatiest role in years and Foster devours it.
Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) observed: “Our unsteady guiding hand through this darkness is Liz Danvers, played with icy perfection by Jodie Foster.

Not long ago, former James Bond actor George Lazenby, who has had the opportunity to star in a sole outing as the agent in the now-appreciated On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, threw his support behind the all-but-confirmed Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the role. Lazenby was reportedly saying to TMZ that Taylor-Johnson would be able to “handle the stunts and all the ladies who love a man in a tux.” However, he also thinks the reason for the delay in any kind of announcement is because “when he auditioned for the part back in the 1960s, he went through a bunch of different tests and auditions before he won the role.” Though, he still thinks Taylor-Johnson would make a great Bond “as long as they do the character justice.” His advice for the young lad would be “to be true to himself and reinvent the role to fit him.”

Former James Bond depicter Pierce Brosnan has given his stamp of approval to actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson to play the suave spy.
Taylor-Johnson is rumoured to be the next 007 agent. Brosnan played James Bond through the 1990s.
Talking about the next to take on the role of the spy agent, Brosnan said that Taylor-Johnson “has the chops” to take it on, reports deadline.
Brosnan starred with Taylor-Johnson in the 2009 film ‘The Greatest’.
“One of the first movies we made, one of our earliest movies, was The Greatest – and he was in it,” Brosnan said.
“He was The Greatest in it. It’s a lovely movie with Aaron and Carey Mulligan and Susan Sarandon and myself. So yes, I read the news about his possibilities of being a Bond, so I would definitely tip my hat to the fellow.”
If Taylor-Johnson becomes the next Bond, Brosnan advises the actor: “Be bold.

Another former James Bond star is giving his seal of approval to Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is rumored to be the next 007 agent.
Pierce Brosnan got his turn as James Bond through the 1990s and the beginning of the aughts across four films. As rumors heat up about the next spy agent to take on the role, Brosnan says Taylor-Johnson “has the chops” to take it on.
“I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so,” Brosnan said in an interview on The Ray D’Arcy Show on RTÉ Radio 1.
After 2021’s No Time to Die, Taylor-Johnson would succeed Daniel Craig. Brosnan began playing James Bond with 1995’s GoldenEye, followed by Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997, The World Is Not Enough in 1999 and Die Another Day in 2002.

“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England. In the titular role of Mary, Moore delivers another powerhouse performance. She owns every scene she’s in and proves once more why she is one of the best actresses working today. Critics agree, “Mary & George” is the Moore show.

If there’s ever a movie from the late 2000s deserving of its reevaluation, might we thrust Speed Racer to the front? A dizzying piece of pop that zooms like an acid trip through the world of racing and anime, the movie just did not connect with audiences…outside of those actively under a certain kind of influence, at least. To say it went under the radar – taking in $44 million domestically on a $120 million budget – would be an understatement, but it has gained a lot traction in the 15+ years since its release, taking on a cult status that was sort of always there underneath the rubble.
Speed Racer star Emile Hirsch is well aware of the movie’s modern reception, although it does remind him of its flop at the box office. “When it came out, it was unanimously dogged…I remember we were all like, ‘Man, this movie is so good.

“I don’t think we’ve done the cleanup,” says Susan Sarandon as she talks about the shadow that Weinstein’s rape conviction has left over the film industry.
It’s been three years since Harvey Weinstein was convicted of two counts of rape and imprisoned, a series of events that led to the #metoo movement which shook Hollywood. In the years since though, Susan Sarandon thinks that the drive to root those who enabled Weinstein has lost its focus.
“I don’t think we’ve done the cleanup afterwards that we should be doing,” Sarandon said during a ’90s Con panel, in a report published by The Hollywood Reporter. The actor clarified, “I don’t think people talk enough about the people who facilitated the Harvey Weinsteins of the world that are still functioning [and] are equally responsible.”

Susan Sarandon is still waiting to see Hollywood improve its working conditions for women. The actress said Sunday that she doesn’t feel the industry is yet to reckon with the #MeToo movement’s revelations surrounding Harvey Weinstein.
“I don’t think we’ve done the cleanup afterwards that we should be doing,” Sarandon said during a ’90s Con panel. She clarified, “I don’t think people talk enough about the people who facilitated the Harvey Weinsteins of the world that are still functioning that are equally responsible.”
Her comments came in response to Mira Sorvino saying Weinstein had “stifled” her career following her 1996 Oscar for best supporting actress. “I stopped being a viable movie actress,” Sorvino said.
Weinstein, co-founder of Miramax, was at the heart of the 2017 #MeToo movement and is currently serving multiple jail sentences for rape and sexual assault.

Celebrities are speaking out about the Israel-Hamas war. Billie Eilish, Ava DuVernay, Mahershala Ali, and Phoebe Bridgers are among the celebrities who have worn pins at recent Hollywood awards ceremonies calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Many others, including America Ferrara, Jon Stewart, and Cate Blanchett, signed a letter calling on President Biden to demand an end to the hostilities in the ongoing war.
The latest conflict began on Oct. 7, when Palestinian militants launched an attack on Israel where at least 1,200 civilians were killed and hundreds more taken hostage. Israel responded by attacking Gaza, sparking a humanitarian crisis. More than 30,000 Palestinians have died in the war, according to the Gaza health ministry.

Jonathan Glazer’s acceptance speech after winning the Academy Award for Best International Film polarized his viewers in the most direct and brutal ways. Addressing the events happening in Gaza, as well as the Israel-Palestine conflict, he talked about how The Zone of Interest worked as a cautionary tale. He made the film to show the true extent of dehumanization and how it perfectly signifies the events of the world right now.
A still from Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest
The speech made many extremely happy, and many infuriated. While the former of the two categories pat Glazer on the back for speaking up, the latter took a different approach. An open letter was written, condemning the filmmaker for what he said during his speech.

AlleyCatz, an unassuming bowling alley in a fictional California town, isn’t compelling to passersby or potential customers from the outside. The venue run by Mozell (Sister Sister’s Jackée Harry) has a drab brick exterior, a monument to the sad architecture of suburban shopping centers. It doesn’t offer much when you walk inside either. The lanes need waxing, the bar requires tending and the equipment is in various stages of disrepair. Some people might take one look at AlleyCatz and run, but Walt (Shameik Moore), the silly protagonist of Yassir and Isaiah Lester’s boisterous directorial debut The Gutter, doesn’t have a choice. He needs a job.
The young man, who prefers to live life without a shirt, has been fired from more gigs than he can count. In a particularly amusing early sequence, Walt recounts his shoddy employment history to Mozell, whose face becomes increasingly disturbed with each revelation.

In the famed "Rick and Morty" episode "Pickle Rick", the mad scientist Rick (Justin Roiland) uses his bizarre scientific acumen to transform his body into a pickle. He initially claims that he conducted his weird experiment for reasons of study, but it's made clear right away that he turned himself into a pickle specifically to avoid going to group therapy with his family. His daughter Beth (Sarah Chalke) leaves Rick alone in his garage, taking the syringe of antidote that would transform him back into a human. Rick, not being able to move as a pickle, is batted around by a cat and knocked into a sewer. He manages to create locomotion for himself using his tongue on a cockroach's exposed brain. He is eventually able to construct gross, muscular limbs out of rat cadavers, as well as weapons and jet packs from other sewer detritus. Rick, as a rat pickle,...

Austin, TX – The depth and number of films at the SXSW Film & TV Festival portion of the week is nirvana for a film geek’s adventure. Here are three of the films I caught at SXSW … all led by familiar names and have high interest. “Arcadian,” “Gutter” and “Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie” … look for them in 2024.

Holed up in a remote UK farm area, the trio fights off a band of creatures who are evolving and mutating … to rid the human virus from planet earth. Laughter strikes from all sides in “The Gutter,” the kind of brash and boisterous broad comedy that has largely been missing from multiplexes in recent years. Directors Yassir and Isaiah Lester seem to share a special ability with their main character Walt (Shameik Moore), who has a habit of hitting the central pin in spite of having a different delivery every time he steps up to the line. The same goes for the filmmaking siblings in this hysterical tale of a bowling alley employee who finds he’s better on the lanes than behind the bar.
Although Walt changes things up from a fast-pitch softball-like windup to simply throwing the bowling ball overhand, you just don’t know where a sight gag or a sharp one-liner will hit you when every part of the frame seems like a ripe opportunity for humor. Nothing seems off limits when Walt takes an...

Ceasefire pins among Oscar guests and nominees were numerous on this afternoon’s red carpet with Poor Things actor Ramy Youssef, Oscar nominated supporting actor Mark Ruffalo from that pic, as well as Barbie “What Was I Made For?” songwriting team Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell donning them.
Youssef told Deadline, “This is for Artists for Ceasefire” about the pin.
“We have a growing list of so many artists who want a permanent immediate ceasefire in Gaza,” the actor added.
“To get really universal about it, it’s about stop killing kids,” he continued.
“We’re using our voices to speak to people’s hearts,” he added, “we want people to have safety and justice.”
“It’s obvious something a lot of people have a lot of opinions about, and I think there can be a place and time to process feelings,” Youssef said, speaking about the divided political situation in Israel and Gaza.

Hundreds of protesters have shut down a major section of Hollywood during the Oscars red carpet, turning Hollywood’s biggest night into a traffic nightmare. With just a few minutes ahead of the telecast’s scheduled start time, much of the ballroom is uncharacteristically empty and people are running to their seats.
There was a growing sense of anxiety from production staffers and publicists on the red carpet that tonight’s Oscars will not start on time due to the gridlock. The broadcast itself kicked off five minutes late.
Protesters shut down Sunset Boulevard between Vine Street and La Brea Avenue. They marched down the street with signs that read “No awards for genocide” and drove school buses covered with Palestinian flags. Police ordered the protest to disperse and waited on Sunset Boulevard with battering rams.
Executives, such as Bob Iger, waited an hour to walk the red carpet due to the traffic jam.
