Is it possible to go to prom these days without thinking about Carrie? Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel has become so ingrained in the zeitgeist that it’s nearly impossible to shop for a prom dress without a fleeting fear that it might become covered in blood. And perhaps that’s a good thing. Revolutionary at the time, the story concludes with a shocking act of righteous revenge, but mixed into the wreckage is a cautionary tale about bullying and religious abuse. Carrie may wield the fiery hand of justice in the film’s final act, but only after a lifetime of victimization at the hands of her classmates and mother. Maybe thinking about Carrie and the real life outcasts that share her...

Spoilers for Brian De Palma's "Carrie" follow.
Brian De Palma's "Carrie" is a harrowingly earnest adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name, in which Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is thrust into the jaws of a cruel world, prompting her to unleash raw, unadulterated rage. Apart from dealing with a rough, abusive upbringing by her overbearing religious mother, Carrie has to wade through throngs of bullies at school every day, who despise her for not fitting into a mold. Just when Carrie thinks she is socially accepted after being crowned prom queen, she is doused in buckets of pig's blood, which drench her dress completely red. This is a turning point for Carrie, who finally unleashes everything dormant within her: her pain, her psychic abilities, and her rage.
The prom massacre echoes a scene from the very start of the film, where Carrie gets her first period...

It is 36 years since RoboCop blasted its way onto UK cinema screens and made a splash of epic, gruesome, proportions. With that a cult-like following is born and the film’s influence cannot be overstated.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is an incredibly methodical ‘making of’ documentary that has now set the standard and an exceptionally high one, no less. It comes as no surprise with the success of their recent projects which include Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story and Pennywise: The Story of It.
The documentary oozes passion and is testament to its directors Christopher Griffiths and Eastwood Allen clear love for the film in a project that has been over seven years in the making.
This four part series spans over more than four hours is nothing short of a triumph, it is forensic in its analysis and brings to life the chaos of the RoboCop shoot and does so brilliantly.

Arrow Video’s January release is the 1970s horror masterwork Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek as a telekinetic title character. If you’ve got a taste for terror – make sure you grab Carrie on 4K Uhd from Arrow Video.
The release includes commentaries and visual essays, a wealth of interviews and archive featurettes, and comes in limited edition packaging, with a 40-page perfect bound book, a fold-out double-sided poster, six collector’s postcards!
In 1974, Stephen King published his first novel, the story of Carrie White, a troubled young girl, bullied by her peers and daughter to a fanatical fundamentalist mother, who discovers she has telekinetic powers. In 1976, it became the first of his works to be adapted for the big screen and, to this day, remains one of the very best.

There's a billion bits of "Star Wars" trivia out there, but one of my favorites is actually from before a single foot of film ran through the camera. You have to remember that, though "Star Wars" is a multi-billion dollar IP now, the original film barely got made. George Lucas had success with "American Graffiti," but this was a script that nobody in Hollywood understood, even Alan Ladd Jr., the Fox exec who gave the film a greenlight.
Lucas's world-building impressed most people, but they just didn't understand the technobabble jargon in a genre that was predominantly either super serious like "2001" or extra campy like "Barbarella." "Star Wars" existed somewhere between the two and that threw everybody, from studio execs to the actors auditioning for the movie, for a loop.
This was also an era pre-internet, so when Hamill went in to his first meeting for the role of Luke Skywalker...

Inthe 1995 "The X-Files" episode "Død Kalm," Agents Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) trek out to the U.S.S. Ardent, an American destroyer frozen in a remote area off the coast of Norway. The ship had recently been abandoned by its crew as a mysterious environmental condition had caused them to age rapidly; although in their 20s, they looked like they were in their mid-60s. When Mulder and Scully arrive on the Ardent, they find that the remaining crew on board has become mummified and that the ship's hull has already begun to rust through. Before too long, Mulder and Scully begin aging rapidly as well. Mulder theorizes that they have encountered a "wrinkle in time," and that the Ardent might be going through something similar to the notorious Philadelphia Experiment of 1943. Scully later finds that their advanced aging might have something to do with the ship's freshwater supply.

We’ve all got that friend. The one who convinces us to push our boundaries or take that crazy risk, even though we have a hunch we’ll probably get hurt. They’re exciting, they’re cool, maybe even supportive, but they tend to lead us down the road to trouble, only to duck out when the consequences roll around. Film has a long history of these toxic troublemakers. Looking back, the Horror/Thriller genre was practically built on the backs of these smiling devils, who lure us in with their fun-loving wiles, then lead us off the side of a cliff.

The fan-funded, four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is available to watch through the Screambox streaming service, and has also received a Blu-ray release. As fans watch the docuseries, it seems the most popular, standout moment is a sequence where weapons master Randy E. Moore talks about interacting with RoboCop star Peter Weller while holding a stack of Oreos. You can watch that clip in this embed:

After the debacle that was Batman & Robin, George Clooney needed to find the kind of role that would rehabilitate his reputation as an actor. He found it in Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight, a crime comedy adapted from a novel by Elmore Leonard. In Out of Sight, Clooney led an outstanding ensemble cast that included Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle, Catherine Keener, Albert Brooks, Ving Rhames, Nancy Allen, and Dennis Farina. It turned out to be a good career move for Clooney — the movie got fantastic reviews and, although it wasn’t a huge box-office hit at the time, has become a cult classic over the years. When Out of Sight was released in 1998, Clooney walked us through the process that resulted in him starring in the film. Brian De Palma’s “play nice” films—in which he shows that he can groove to the strictures of pop cinema while reinvigorating formulaic stories with his formal gifts—often have an acrid aftertaste. While watching The Untouchables or Mission: Impossible, the De Palma acolyte may sense the artist’s resentment at having to impersonally flex his mastery. Carlito’s Way, though, is an exception.
Working from a vivid screenplay by David Koepp, adapted from two novels by Judge Edwin Torres, De Palma embraces the romantic possibilities of mainstream cinema, using his skill to deepen the audience’s engagement with melodrama rather than to interrogate it. The 1993 film is an increasingly endangered bird—an intelligent and beautiful entertainment for adults—that was taken for granted by many at the time.

Back in 1990, Lifetime premiered its first-ever original made-for-tv movie, Memories of a Murder. The film followed a woman (Nancy Allen) who hits her head and gets amnesia, causing her to forget that a psychopath is trying to kill her family. It set expectations for the network’s movies for years to come: over-the-top stories about women in danger that were either cautionary tales, survival narratives, or both. This fall, the network keeps the tradition going with the release of its 500th original film.

A good franchise is hard to kill. Bad ones, like the seven-film torture device Police Academy, can be even harder to exterminate. But sometimes doomed series are finally put out of their misery. Up on the shelf they go, doomed to a future of languishing on lists like this one.
The murder weapon is usually money. More specifically, the lack thereof. A big enough failure means a franchise won’t get another chance to pull their act together, and the most spectacular bombs get to live on as warnings to future film students. Even more interesting are the ones that aren’t total flops, the movies that maybe made a profit, but one so small or negligible that their studios decided to put that old franchise to bed, anyway. Here are 15 movies that killed their respective franchises for good.

"RoboCop" was a hot favorite on the school playground when I was a kid. Stories of brutal cop killings and boardroom bloodbaths joined the head-popping scene from "Scanners" and the gruesome exploits of Freddy Krueger as the kind of viewing choice that separated the cool kids from the rest of us. Or at least, separated those who had access to their parents' video rental card from those who didn't.
I caught up with it again several years ago after a gap of about two decades, going in expecting a blast of pure '80s nostalgia. I got a blast alright, but there was nothing sentimental about it. Seeing it again as an adult made me realize that "RoboCop" isn't just a fun movie, it's a great one. Paul Verhoeven directs the hell out of it and there is plenty of substance and style to go with the over-the-top action.

Dating can be stressful. Anyone who’s ever ventured out into the singles market knows that the search to find a soulmate, a hookup, or just someone with whom to share a quiet evening can feel like a perilous roll of the dice. You’re just as likely to wind up with a serial killer as you are Prince Charming. The horror genre is not immune from this unpredictability.
Though some cinematic dates turn out well, other times the hot woman sitting at the end of the bar is secretly planning to take would-be suitors back to her house and feed them to the creature living in her attic. In fact, some of the worst dates in history have happened in horror movies.
Sometimes the danger is lurking in the shadows just steps away from the happy couple and other times it’s sitting on the other side of a candlelit table.

This essay is one of several contributed by filmmakers and actors as part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time package.
It’s an image that is so powerful it’s now seared into our collective memory — a skinny teenage girl in a baby pink prom dress, bathed from head to toe in blood, her eyes wide with cold fury as the school burns around her. In my estimation, few films have reached the heights of Brian De Palma’s classic tale of psychic vengeance.
I can’t exactly remember the first time I saw “Carrie,” only that I was young enough for it to be one of those films that gets under your skin and stays there. It was so beautifully and audaciously filmed, a testament to the boldness and vision of De Palma, where every moment is staged with operatic style. But just as crucially, Stephen King...

Exclusive: Cinedigm has acquired all North American rights to four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop.
The project, six years in the making, is set to launch on Cinedigm’s horror streaming service Screambox and then on digital platforms early next year.
Featuring new interviews with cast and crew, including stars Dr Peter Weller, Diane Robin, Ronny Cox, Nancy Allen, Ray Wise, and director Paul Verhoeven, the series deep-dives on the story behind the franchise and its creation. Released at the time by Orion Pictures, it was set in a dystopian and crime-ridden Detroit and follows a terminally wounded cop who returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. The original, which took more than 50M off an estimated 13M budget, spawned two sequels and a 2014 remake.

The original, which took more than 50M off an estimated 13M budget, spawned two sequels and a 2014 remake.

New York City during the 1970s was the hottest of messes. The metropolis was plagued by rising crime rates as white flight drove a chunk of the population to the suburbs. Unemployment soared. The two-day blackout of 1977 engulfed the city in darkness during a sweltering summer when David Burkowitz (aka the Son of Sam) was gunning down citizens at random. It was a terrifying time.
It was also a total blast. The disco era peaked at the celeb-stuffed Studio 54. The U.S. punk rock scene exploded at Cbgb. Reggie Jackson joined the Yankees for a tumultuous tenure that resulted in two World Series victories. The city seemed to be thriving and falling apart at the same time, and this condition was captured in the multitude of movies that were shot on location there throughout the decade. In films as different as "The French Connection," "Three Days of the Condor,...

With the previous episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, we looked back at the 1982 Stephen King / George A. Romero classic Creepshow. With the new episode, we’re staying in King territory to dig into the making of the very first King adaptation, Brian De Palma’s 1976 classic Carrie (watch it Here). To find out what it took to bring King to the screen for the first time, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by De Palma from a screenplay by Lawrence D. Cohen, Carrie has the following synopsis:
Withdrawn and sensitive teen Carrie White faces taunting from classmates at school and abuse from her fanatically pious mother at home. When strange occurrences start happening around Carrie, she begins to suspect that she has supernatural powers. Invited to the prom by the empathetic Tommy Ross, Carrie tries to let her guard down, but things eventually...

I must admit, when I was a child, I thought "RoboCop" was some cheesy b-movie. I knew next to nothing about the movie except the title, but I assumed it had to be trash. It had a title akin to "Sharknado" or "Lavalantula," a sloppy portmanteau of two things that on their own are pretty cool. It wasn't until I got older and finally watched it that I recognized it for the brilliant satire that it is.
It makes sense then that when the script came to Nancy Allen, who went on to star as the loyal police partner of the titular RoboCop, she assumed the movie would be horrible when she read the script. She talked about this, as well as her quick turnaround on the movie, in an interview with The Guardian:
"The script said 'RoboCop' and I thought: 'Oh my God, they've got to change the title –- it's terrible!

Pierce Brosnan seems to have had several notable false starts in his career. In what might be an infamous story, Brosnan was to play James Bond in the 1987 film "The Living Daylights" right after production was set to wrap on the fourth, and presumed final, season of his modestly successful TV series, "Remington Steele." The story goes that "Steele" was to be replaced by the Fred Dryer cop show "Hunter," freeing up Brosnan to step into the high-profile role of 007 and his co-star Stephanie Zimbalist to take the role of Anne Lewis in Paul Verhoeven's "RoboCop" (the part that would eventually taken by Nancy Allen). Ironically, Brosnan signing onto play James Bond saw a sudden new wave of interest in "Remington Steele," and NBC unexpectedly renewed the show for a fifth season. As Brosnan told the Irish Times:
"I'd done all the photos with the iconic gun pose. And...

Brian De Palma's "Carrie" is arguably more of an important, relevant horror film today than it was during its original release in 1976. The character arc of Carrie White is one of the most shocking and severe transformations in cinema, and it remains just as powerful today. Carrie represents the bullied outcasts and the quiet masses who never feel any level of acceptance whatsoever. In a decade of legendary performances, Sissy Spacek's portrayal of Carrie remains one of the most memorable acting accomplishments of the seventies. It's tragically poignant at times, and then, eerily triumphant when she enacts her psychic revenge during the bloody, fireball finale.
In early roles, John Travolta, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen and William Katt play high school bullies who have no idea what's in store for them. Those interactions with the other actors surely put Spacek in the right headspace to play the victim. But...

In 1978’s The Films in My Life, Francois Truffaut wrote that all movies should express “the joy of making cinema.” The typical Brian De Palma film delivers that pleasure in spades, but any joy experienced by his characters is usually short-lived, undercut by De Palma’s macabre and merciless humor. The paradigm for that unsparing world view is 1981’s Blow Out, a feature-length sick joke with a devastating punchline.
Blow Out is set in Philadelphia when the leaves are turning and the mood is jubilant—the city is celebrating its founding with a procession of parades, fireworks, and endless speeches, all leading to a self-congratulatory finale called “Liberty Day.” So the town is more raucous than usual—a bad break for Jack Terry whose...
