For those of us who remember going to the movies in 1977, we were treated to Star Wars, Smokey And The Bandit, The Spy Who Loved Me, Airport 77, The Car, Orca and Capricorn One. There was a rich wealth of movies to choose from and a time when audiences in their local cinemas would cheer and clap for the heroes. Then on December 14, 1977, coming off the success of Jaws, that director Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece graced the screens. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was the filmmaker’s next movie and, along with star Richard Dreyfuss and the magnificent score from composer John Williams, took audiences on a journey of mankind’s first meeting with aliens and let us know we are not alone in the universe.

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

The story behind the making of Jaws is arguably as riveting as the film itself. From inclement weather to script revisions to a constantly malfunctioning mechanical shark, Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic was plagued by setbacks and complications that inflated its budget to $12 million and tripled its shooting schedule from 55 to 159 days. Spielberg has bluntly described directing Jaws as a "horrendous" experience, but he wasn't alone in suffering on-set in Martha's Vineyard. Among those who shared in the young filmmaker's misery were co-stars Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss, whose performative animosity as grizzled shark hunter Quint and impassioned ichthyologist Hooper, respectively, wasn't limited to the film itself. Throughout production, the two actors famously and repeatedly clashed, and their off-screen antics would ultimately give their onscreen relationship a level of authenticity that blurred the line between fiction and reality.

Richard Dreyfuss, a familiar face in Steven Spielberg’s filmography, went to unorthodox lengths to land a role in one of their collaborations. While Dreyfuss’s performance in Jaws cemented his status as a leading actor, it wasn’t a smooth sail to win the role in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
A still of Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).
Steven Spielberg explored various options by seeking an actor with a touch of eccentricity to portray the role. Initially considering names like Steve McQueen, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, and Jack Nicholson, Spielberg had his eyes set on an actor who could embody Neary’s beloved yet unconventional character.

Amidst the competition, Richard Dreyfuss emerged as a frontrunner by strategically advocating for himself. Going beyond traditional auditioning, Dreyfuss adopted a bold approach.

As she ascended the Hollywood ladder in the late 2000s, Emily Blunt was a rising star who worked at the forefront of modern cinema and appeared in movies like The Young Victoria and The Devil Wears Prada. Jaws get an alternative poster imagining the Orca boat sailing away from a shark storm cloud. The 1975 movie launched Steven Spielberg's career and still holds up remarkably well today. Dubbing Jaws Spielberg's best movie is challenging due to titles like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park, among others.
An alternative Jaws poster makes Steven Spielberg's classic film look even more epic. Released in 1975, Jaws is the seminal movie that launched Spielberg's movie career, paving the way for early-career films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. The 1975 movie follows three men, played by Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss, as they embark on a quest aboard a boat called the Orca to take down a killer shark.

Steven Spielberg is one of the wisest men in Hollywood and is known to give all kinds of advice to his peers, whether they are part of his films or not. After all, there is no one who wouldn’t want to get advice from someone who has such a wealth of knowledge. However, John Carpenter has one notable Steven Spielberg movie, which he claimed was pretentious.
Jurassic Park
Steven Spielberg has been a part of many iconic franchises over the years, as he has been responsible for films such as the Jurassic Park franchise, Indiana Jones film series, Saving Private Ryan and many other films. That is why his opinion carries a lot of weight when it comes to anything related to films, but that doesn’t mean all of his films are equally well-received.

No Way Up offers a fresh take on shark movies by highlighting tension outside of the sharks themselves. No Way Up adds complexity by exploring mental health and survival challenges, unlike most shark movies. No Way Up differs from its predecessors by balancing serious tones with humor, romance, and sociopolitical commentary.
The following contains spoilers for No Way Up, now playing in theaters and on video on demand.
When it comes to shark movies, the genre has been defined by two eras. The first applies to the classic 1970s and 1980s where Jaws molded the concept of being afraid to go in the water. While the sequels were iffy, at best, the Steven Spielberg original movie remains a classic to this day.
The second era is the modern one that started in the 2010s and 2020s, where The Meg is the shark franchise that stands out most with its sci-fi...

The Academy Awards have a chance to do something that has only been done three previous times in their entire history. With Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) nabbing surprising wins at the Critics Choice Awards, it’s the first time ever that both of their lead acting winners matched with the Golden Globe Musical/Comedy champions. If they both repeat at the Oscars on March 10, it would only be the fourth time that the winners of Best Actor and Best Actress paired with the Globe comedy winners.
The first time we had this match since the Golden Globe category creation in 1950 was for the year 1964 when musical films dominated the awards with Rex Harrison winning for “My Fair Lady” as Professor Henry Higgins and Julie Andrews for “Mary Poppins” as the title character. Those movies went on to be the top two nominated films at the...

In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, 88 films have each received nominations for both Best Actor and Best Actress. Although there have been 19 cases of two or more movies doing so in a single year, there hasn’t been such an occurrence since 1996, when both lead lineups included performers from “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas.” However, according to Gold Derby’s late-stage 2024 Oscar nominations predictions, that nearly three-decade gap is set to soon be closed by costar pairs from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro.”
The vast majority of the Oscars prognosticators who’ve been shaping our odds all season agree that Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) will all clinch academy mentions for their lead performances. Richard Dreyfuss will star in the movie Into the Deep, battling a killer great white shark. It marks Dreyfuss' return to a shark-related movie since his role in Jaws in 1975. Dreyfuss has continued to add to his impressive list of credits at the age of 76.
It is almost fifty years since Richard Dreyfuss faced down a great white shark in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, and now he is about to do it all over again in the new movie Into the Deep. Created by Stern, the official Jaw pinball machine features a shark, chum bucket, and pictures of Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw. It looks magnificent.
It’s almost 50 years since Jaws first terrorised a generation of would-be swimmers, but incredibly, there’s never been an officially licenced pinball machine based on Steven Spielberg’s killer shark thriller.
That is, until now. As reported by IGN, the Chicago-based manufacturer Stern has unveiled a toothsome and entirely official Jaws pinball table.
Its features include a video screen that shows clips from the 1975 movie alongside helpful hints (“Shoot the fin!!”), airbrushed likenesses of actors Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss, a motorised shark fin, and a chum bucket that tips over when struck by your silver ball.
It also includes newly-recorded soundbites from Dreyfuss himself, as well as samples of John Williams’ unforgettable durr-durr-dunnnn score.

Forty-nine years after playing a major role in the Steven Spielberg classic Jaws (and fourteen years after making an appearance in Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D), Richard Dreyfuss has been cast in another film that promises to be packed with aquatic thrills, Vigilante Diaries director Christian Sesma’s Into the Deep. J.J. Abrams touts Warren Beatty’s Bonnie and Clyde and Shampoo for must-see viewing as part of the January 2024 Turner Classic Movies lineup in his own TCM Picks video that dropped on Tuesday.
“They could not be more different,” Abrams says of Arthur Penn’s 1967 crime spree drama Bonnie and Clyde, which also starred Faye Dunaway, and Hal Ashby’s Oscar-winning dramedy Shampoo. Bonnie and Clyde “portrayed violence in a way that had not typically been seen in American cinema and really ushered in a new age of bold graphic storytelling in a way that you really hadn’t seen before,” Abrams says in the video.
Having made a name for himself in Hollywood with television and popular series like Felicity, Alias and Lost, you can see the grounds for Abrams’ eventual success making action tentpole movies, given his love for classic Hollywood pics.

Norby Walters, the onetime music agent who ran the annual “Night of 100 Stars” Oscar party for years and hosted an iconic low-stakes poker party for actors, died December 12. He was 91. His son, Walters Media Group founder and former Bold Films CEO Gary Michael Walters, confirmed the news but did not provide details.
Born Norbert Meyer, in 1952 Walters started booking jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz into his father’s bar.
Walters and his brother, Walter took over a place from their father and dubbed it Norby & Walter’s Bel Air, but its sign had no ampersand — which led to the name Walters would use during his career. He later took over a failing nightclub located next to the world-famous Copacabana, dubbed it Norby Walters’s Supper Club, and attracted a who’s who of boldfaced New York City names.
“What was I going to do?...

Norby Walters, a music agent who worked with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, Kool & the Gang and Public Enemy before gaining renown in Hollywood for his annual “Night of 100 Stars” Oscar party and weekly poker game, has died. He was 91.
Walters died Dec. 10 of natural causes at an assisted living facility in Burbank, his son, producer Gary Michael Walters (Whiplash), told The Hollywood Reporter.
Walters hosted his first Oscar night gala in 1990 and the last in 2017, most often inside the Beverly Hilton’s Crystal Ballroom. Among those who attended were Shirley Jones, Robert Forster, Charles Bronson, Patricia Neal, Richard Dreyfuss, Eva Marie Saint, Martin Landau, Louis Gossett Jr., J.K. Steven Spielberg began his prolific filmmaking career in 1969 when he was only 23-years-old. Since then, he has directed 34 feature-length films, which includes some of the greatest movie ever made: Schindler's List, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can; the list goes on and on. It was his third film in 1975, however, that brought Spielberg to prominence and established him as a pioneer of Hollywood.
Based on the 1974 novel of the same name (which is in turn based on real events around the New Jersey/New York beaches), Jaws is about a massive great white shark that's terrorizing and devouring people in a New England beach town. Determined to restore order, a police chief, marine biologist, and shark hunter band together to pursue the beast across the ocean.

Sometimes, the reputations of certain movies have been built up so much over the decades that, to an extent, newcomers can't help but come away disappointed when they finally experience it for the very first time. Others, however, live up to every inch of their status as bona fide classics. It's safe to say that "Close Encounters of a Third Kind," director Steven Spielberg's first film about extraterrestrial visitors, belongs firmly in the latter category. Although multiple generations of movie lovers only encountered the 1977 film through their parents, film school courses, or entirely on their own, various re-releases over the years and constant praise from both filmmakers and critics alike have kept "Close Encounters" exactly where it deserves to be -- at the forefront of the conversation about the greatest and most influential movies of all time.

Disney’s reputation is notoriously squeaky clean.
The beloved company has provided family-friendly fun for decades, with live-action favorites and animated classics spanning back to the 1930s.
As a powerful force in the industry and one of Hollywood’s biggest studios, the company expanded its reach over the years with film distribution companies, like Touchstone Pictures, Miramax, Searchlight Pictures and Buena Vista Distribution.
The movies often featured more adult themes than one would expect from the company. Because they are published by subsidiaries, the titles are all only indirectly Disney-related – but they still fall under the major studio’s umbrella anyway.

"Jaws" is an immortal classic, but decades on from its 1975 release, several of the movie's principal players have left us. Peter Benchley, the source novel's author and the film's co-writer turned shark conservationist, passed in 2006. Robert Shaw, who played the shark-hating fisherman Quint, died in 1978, a mere three years after the premiere of "Jaws." Shaw still left his mark on film history thanks to his masterful monologue about Quint's experience during the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis.
Of course, the biggest winner of "Jaws" was director Steven Spielberg, who entered the production of "Jaws" as a scrappy young upstart and turned it into his first rung while climbing the Hollywood lader. Spielberg is the most influential American filmmaker of his generation and the ones that have followed. He's never lost his magic touch either, so we can only hope and pray he stays with us even longer.

Genres films are often overlooked by academy voters and none more so than horror. Horror films have been a cornerstone of cinema since the inception of the format with George Méliès‘ “Le Manoir du Diable” often considered the first horror movie. Since then, we’ve had hundreds of important horror movies including “Nosferatu,” “Psycho,” “Rosemary’s Baby,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Halloween,” and “The Shining.” These have all influenced not only the horror genre but the film industry at large in one way or another. Yet, we’ve only had six films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars in Academy Awards history. Let’s take a look at them.
The first horror film ever nominated for Best Picture was William Friedkin‘s “The Exorcist,” which follows Max von Sydow‘s priest trying to rid a 12-year-old girl of the entity possessing her. The film made a big, bloody splash at the 1974 Academy Awards,...

Albert Brooks and Rob Reiner, now both 76, have been best friends since high school, having met in the drama club at Beverly Hills High. (Richard Dreyfuss was also in their class.) Both were what might now be referred to as “nepo babies” in that both of their fathers had successful careers in comedy — Rob as son of the legendary Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Albert the son of Harry Einstein (yes — his real name is Albert Einstein), a radio comedian who found fame as a character called Parkyakarkus. Harry might have gone on to greater heights had he not suffered a fatal heart attack moments after his routine at a roast of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in 1958. Eleven-year-old Albert was listening live on the radio that night.

The sea has long been a source of fear and fascination, with myths and legends about monstrous sea creatures and drownings. Many horror movies use the sea as a setting to create a sense of isolation and an unstoppable force against the characters. Films like Jaws, Deep Blue Sea, and Underwater have made audiences afraid to go in the water with their terrifying and realistic portrayals of the dangers lurking beneath the ocean's surface.
There are a number of terrifying horror movies that are set at sea, whether they're focused on the water's surface or the depths below. The sea has been rightly considered petrifying for millennia, prompting legends and myths about monstrous sea creatures and fatal drownings. Some horror movies have exploited this, and depict an unsettling interpretation of the world's almighty oceans.

Even more than his long-time colleague and friend, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas is the boy who never grew up. For one, Star Wars is so inspired by sci-fi serials like Flash Gordon and the WWII dogfight movies that his imagined sci-fi universe feels oddly antiquated, and befitting its setting in a moment “a long, long time ago.” No less fitting is that American Graffiti, Lucas’s breakout hit, is a love letter to his youth in the 1950s and ’60s, and that it’s become the ur-text of the nostalgia movie as a subgenre. Everything from Happy Days to The Big Chill lives in its shadow, though given the shininess of the film’s surfaces, from the neon-lit drive-ins to chrome-plated cars that have been buffed to perfection, perhaps it’s more accurate to say that the film’s descendants are illuminated by its gleaming glow.
American Graffiti has the most threadbare of plots.

Richard Dreyfuss criticizes Broadway play, The Shark is Broken, for depicting him inaccurately, saying it "hurt because it wasn't true." Dreyfuss denies the existence of a feud between him and Robert Shaw, citing their on-set banter as playful and non-serious. Richard Dreyfuss denies the existence of a feud between him and costar Robert Shaw on the set of Jaws, expressing that it was blown out of proportion. Dreyfuss takes issue with director Steven Spielberg's contributions to this persistent rumor, especially as it is featured in the play The Shark Is Broken. The Dreyfuss and Shaw feud narrative first emerged in 2010, with a documentary highlighting a contentious dynamic between the two stars on set.

All of a sudden, Matt Hooper’s iconic quote – “I think that I am familiar with the fact that you are going to ignore this particular problem until it swims up and bites you on the ass!” – is more relevant for its speaker, as Richard Dreyfuss is now taking umbrage with a play about the making of Jaws. Co-written by and starring Ian Shaw, son of the late Robert Shaw – who died just three years after Jaws scared moviegoers in theaters (and out of the ocean) – The Shark Is Broken is the latest target of Dreyfuss, who is none too pleased about his depiction and that of the supposedly makeshift feud between himself and Shaw.
Although it debuted in 2019 and Richard Dreyfuss even attended a performance, he is not too happy that Ian Shaw didn’t consult him on the making of Jaws; instead, Shaw used his father’s diary as a reference.

Richard Dreyfuss thinks “Jaws” director Steven Spielberg and the film’s co-screenwriter Carl Gottlieb played a factor in how he was portrayed in the new Broadway show “The Shark Is Broken.”
Dreyfuss made his remarks about the play during an interview with Vanity Fair, after he went to see the production earlier in October.
“The Shark Is Broken” imagines what could have happened behind the scenes during the classic film’s production and features character portrayals of the real stars of the movie, Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider and the late Robert Shaw. It was c0-written by Shaw’s son, Ian, who also stars in the show.
Dreyfuss said Ian never contacted him to gain his perspective.

Jaws actor Richard Dreyfuss recently caught a performance of Broadway’s The Shark Is Broken, the comedy-drama about the making of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster. Despite the smile on his face in meet-the-cast photos, he wasn’t very happy.
In an exclusive Vanity Fair interview, Dreyfuss criticizes the play – written by and co-starring Ian Shaw, dead-ringer son of the late Jaws actor Robert Shaw – for what he says are inaccuracies and for making him look like “a big jerk.”

Jaws is one of the scariest creature features in over four decades. One death in Jaws has always haunted viewers even though no gore was shown. The death of Alex Kintner in Jaws was even scarier in the book but was far surpassed in a cut scene.
Steven Spielberg's Jaws has been terrifying audiences for generations, thanks to John Williams' heart-pounding score, the ominous presence of the titular great white shark, and shocking, violent deaths. Of all the shark's victims, perhaps none are as vividly etched into cultural memory as Alex Kintner (Jeffrey Voorhees): the young boy who wanted an extra 10 minutes in the water during the Amity Independence Day Festival and ended up becoming the shark's second victim. Although his death isn't seen on screen, the image of his torn inflatable and his mother hopelessly calling his name marks a turning point in the film.

John Cazale had a brief but incredible film career, appearing in five films that all earned Best Picture nominations and are considered some of the greatest films of the 20th century. Despite his success in film, Cazale remained committed to his work as a stage actor and appeared in two theater productions with close friend Al Pacino. Cazale met Meryl Streep while working on a theater production and they became romantically involved, remaining together until the end of Cazale's life. He continued to act in his final film, The Deer Hunter, despite being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
John Cazale boasts a brief yet flawless and prestigious film career, one that allowed the actor to make an indelible mark on history, despite being taken too young. The “New Hollywood” era, which hit its full stride with the creator-driven studio films of the 1970s, introduced audiences to some of the greatest screen actors of all time.

Last week, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. With the studio celebrating its 100th anniversary, we figured now would be an opportune time to look back at the studio Disney launched to distribute their more grown-up fare, the now shuttered Touchstone Pictures.
