A couple years ago, Spider One – the frontman of Powerman 5000 and the brother of fellow musician/filmmaker Rob Zombie – made his feature directorial debut with the horror anthology Allegoria. Last year, his second feature – a horror film called Bury the Bride – was released through the Tubi streaming service. His third film, which is called Little Bites, recently secured a worldwide distribution deal through Rlje Films and the Shudder streaming service – and, having received a theatrical and VOD release in October, Little Bites is now set to start streaming on Shudder as of February 21st!
Written and directed by Spider One, Little Bites centers on Mindy, a young widow and mother who tries to protect her daughter Alice from a flesh eating monster named Agyar. Mindy has been secretly sacrificing her own life by allowing the creature to feast on her body as she keeps Alice hidden away at her grandmother’s house.

The A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise has seen various characters come and go, among them Kristen Parker, played by Patricia Arquette, and she’s right about one specific thing about her. Back in 1984, Wes Craven terrorized the audience with a one-of-a-kind slasher villain in A Nightmare On Elm Street. The movie introduces Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a child killer burned alive by the parents of his victims. However, that isn’t enough to stop him, and he returns to terrorize the children of his murderers where their parents won’t ever be able to defend them: their dreams.
However, if Krueger kills them in their dreams, they die too. One of his targets, Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), goes to lengths to defeat him, but it’s not enough. The success of A Nightmare On Elm Street made way for a franchise with a total of nine movies (including a...

“Horror in the 90s sucked!” It’s a phrase we have all heard. We may have even uttered it. While the 70s was a time for grimy experimentation that set the standards for decades to come, and the 80s were the heyday of franchise slashers, the 90s represented something completely different for horror fans. The slasher giants like Halloween and Friday the 13th were petering out and no new horror icons had risen to take their places. In the last few years of the decade, the slasher re-emerged via Scream and gave rise to the more clever, self-referencial horror cycle that carried us into the new millennium, but what about the years before that? Was horror truly the barren wasteland that so often gets moaned about?
No! No, it was not.
The 90s might have seen the deaths of Freddy, Jason and Michael, but it also saw the births of...

Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) showcases the more sentimental side of Stephen King with The Life of Chuck, based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds. Neon has officially set a release date for the new King adaptation.
The Life of Chuck will be released in theaters on May 30, 2025.
TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner is split in three separate acts, all linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse. “It’s a Stand By Me for the multiple lives within each of us, pulled between our dreams and down-to-earth pragmatism.” Tom Hiddleston plays the title character.
I wrote in my TIFF review, “It’s the little things that matter most, both in life and in The Life of Chuck. Flanagan finds inventive and stylish ways to remind us of this throughout, shaking loose deep-seated memories from Chuck’s upbringing and highlighting...

The Life Of Chuck, based on Stephen King’s novel and directed by Mike Flanagan, is confirmed for a 2025 release.
Coming out of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, there was a feeling that Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck could be an awards contender. Not only is this year’s race for Best Picture said to be one of the most open we’ve had for years, but The Life Of Chuck would win TIFF’s coveted People’s Choice Award, historically a strong indicator that a film would go on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Twelve of the last 14 winners have gone on to do so.
The film’s US distributor Neon, however, has instead elected to give the film a May 2025 release slot according to Deadline. Not only does that preclude the film...

"Every studio rejected it." These are the words of the late horror master Wes Craven, speaking in a 2014 oral history with Vulture regarding his 1984 cinematic classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street." It's difficult to imagine the horror genre -- if not broader pop culture -- without Freddy Krueger in it, but it was, indeed, a Herculean task getting this now-classic horror movie made. "I have the rejection letter from Universal framed on my office wall," Craven added.
What's perhaps most amazing of all is that this wasn't even Craven's first film. The man that would eventually go on to save the slasher in the '90s with "Scream" already had "Last House on the Left" and "The Hills Have Eyes" on his resume,...

It's the nursery rhyme nightmares are literally made of, but what's the origin behind A Nightmare On Elm Street's Freddy Krueger nursery rhyme? While the franchise is iconic now, A Nightmare On Elm Street creator Wes Craven had a hard time getting the project a greenlight. Every major studio rejected it, feeling audiences wouldn't find dreams scary. New Line eventually picked up A Nightmare On Elm Street, which was shot for a low-budget.
The movie soon became a word-of-mouth smash with the franchise's razor-clawed villain Freddy becoming a horror icon. The series spawned numerous sequels, a TV series, a video game, and assorted merchandise. The series would eventually be rebooted with 2010's A Nightmare On Elm Street starring Jackie Earle Haley, but despite being a financial success, it received roundly negative reviews and a planned sequel didn't happen. This year, Wes Craven’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Wes Craven’s immortal horror classic, turns 40.
The film, inspired by true events (watch the documentary “The Nightmare” for more), follows a group of kids who die after encountering a spooky boogeyman named Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Freddy is the classic god of mischief – a shapeshifting serial killer with the power to scare teenagers to death. Heather Langenkamp plays Nancy Thompson, one of the terrorized teens who discovers her own familial connection to Krueger.
“A Nightmare on Elm Street” would spawn an enviable franchise, including sequels (Langenkamp would return for “Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors” and “New Nightmare”), a television series, a 1-900 number where you could chat with Freddy (seriously), oodles of merchandise, a spin-off (2003’s “Freddy vs. Jason”) and a remake (among other things). Most recently, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” got re-released in a new,...

Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour takes a fascinating and disturbing piece of true crime history—the story of Rodney Alcala, aka “The Dating Game Killer”—and turns it into a tense, nostalgia-soaked crime thriller. Balancing her trademark charm with unsettling tension, Kendrick directs a stylish film that thrives on its great performances, retro vibes, and a narrative that’ll make you grateful for modern-day DNA evidence. Though it occasionally feels a bit too polished for the gritty 70s setting, Woman of the Hour is a strong debut for Kendrick behind the camera.
“[The Woman of the Hour] thrives on its great performances, retro vibes, and a narrative that’ll make you grateful for modern-day DNA evidence.”
The movie opens with a single, harrowing scene that sets the tone: Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto) lures a woman into a secluded spot under the guise of a photography session, only to strangle her to death. This establishes Alcala’s pattern—charm,...

I spoke with Robert Englund last year about his career, so when I was given the chance to interview him and Langenkamp in honor of the film's anniversary, instead of asking him about Freddy Krueger again, I asked Heather Langenkamp to give her feelings on "the bastard son of 100 maniacs" and Englund to give his thoughts on Nancy Thompson.

Few directors can legitimately lay claim to one major horror franchise. Wes Craven is the rare mastermind behind two. The genre icon not only envisioned one of the most imaginative slasher entries of all time with 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, he reinvented the genre once again in 1996 with Scream. Both films birthed franchises that remain tentpoles of the genre, making household names out of beloved final girls and frightening onscreen killers alike. And between them lies Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, a curious 1994 slasher sequel that not only takes place in our world, but offers a faux glimpse behind the scenes of horrific storytelling. Arguably a prototype for the meta-slasher craze, New Nightmare blurs the line between fantasy and reality while questioning the power of horror in a rapidly changing world.

One of the most iconic horror movies is celebrating a major milestone with A Nightmare on Elm Street's 40th anniversary. The 1984 film hailed from writer/director Wes Craven, who had built a solid filmography for himself up to that point with the likes of The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, and properly put him on the map as one of the genre's greats. From there on, Craven's genre spotlight would continue to grow with the likes of the now-cult classics The Serpent and the Rainbow and The People Under the Stairs and, eventually, launching the still-iconic Scream franchise with Kevin Williamson.

"Who better to resurrect Freddy than his creator?" This is the question posed by producer Bob Shaye, playing himself, in 1994's "New Nightmare," typically billed as Wes Craven's "New Nightmare." That's because Craven, who had long since stepped away from directing the Freddy Krueger films, had returned to his post behind the camera. However, this wasn't just for a paycheck; Craven was about to provide the genre with its boldest reinvention arguably since he introduced us to Freddy in the original nightmare-inducing "A Nightmare on Elm Street" a decade earlier.

When we think about iconic final girls, it’s usually Laurie Strode, Nancy Thompson, and Sidney Prescott who come to mind. These fantastic female characters have become horror movie legends, celebrated for their strength and resilience while inspiring a generation of girls to take back their power. Horror historians will also note the flawless Jess Bradford (Olivia Hussey) from Bob Clark’s Black Christmas while sci-fi fans will suggest Ellen Ripley. But before them all was Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns). The star and sole survivor of Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre burst onto the scene in October of 1974 and forever changed the way we view women in film. On a road trip through Texas, Sally crosses paths with some of the most depraved villains in the history of horror and manages to live through a night of sheer hell. Though Hooper’s gritty masterpiece has stood the test of time,...

Over the course of three In Search of Darkness documentary films, all of which were over four hours long (with one of them nearly reaching the six hour mark), director David Weiner did an incredible job of digging into the many great (and some not-so-great) horror movies that were released in the 1980s. There were still so many movies left uncovered that Weiner could circle back and continue looking into ’80s movies for years to come – but instead, he has decided to move forward into the ’90s with the upcoming documentary In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994. At the time, fans considered the horror genre to be in a lull, a downswing from the heights it reached in the ’80s. But with this movie, Weiner aims to point out that we did still get a lot of good horror movies during that time period. You can get a sample of the...

This essay by Heather Langenkamp on her favorite horror movie of all time is one of several contributed as part of Variety’s 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time package.
The first horror movie that I ever saw was “The Wizard of Oz,” and it had the best final girl of all time, Dorothy. And I used Dorothy a lot when I was thinking about playing Nancy in “Nightmare on Elm Street” and her journey and bravery and the way she approached her problems. But those flying monkeys terrified me, and I still think about them today.
I talked with “Nightmare on Elm Street” director Wes Craven about it. I said to him, “This reminds me so much of how Dorothy’s character is developed here, and especially when she gets to the castle: the Wizard and they’re fighting the Witch and all of these parallels between the Witch and Freddy.

Little Bites tells the disturbing tale of Mindy Vogel, a young widow struggling to shield her daughter from a sinister threat lurking within the walls of their home. Mindy lives with her young daughter Alice, but sends the girl away to live with her grandmother for safety reasons.
You see, there’s something sinister dwelling in the basement—a flesh-hungry monster called Agyar. Played by Jon Sklaroff with chilling effect, Agyar appears mostly as a shadowy figure. He feeds on Mindy by giving her gruesome “little bites,” leaving the woman increasingly drained.
Mindy, portrayed rawly by Krsy Fox, sacrifices greatly to protect Alice from Agyar. The creature threatens to claim Alice as his next meal if Mindy doesn’t submit to his feedings. Mindy’s turmoil grows more desperate as social pressures also mount.
Barbara Crampton takes on the role of a probing social worker, while Heather Langenkamp adds depth as another mother.

For 40 years now, A Nightmare On Elm Street has been the film of horror fans’ dreams. Or, more appropriately, nightmares. First unleashed on the big screen in 1984, Wes Craven’s somnambulist slasher dove deep into the subconscious to deliver stellar scares, bloody kills – and, in Freddy Krueger and Nancy Thompson, one of the all-time-great horror villain and final girl combos. Across those four decades, Nightmare’s impact has never dulled, remaining one of the greatest and most iconic horror films of all time – and now, for the very first time, it’s available in 4K to mark that all-important 40th anniversary. One, two, Freddy’s coming for you…
Across his career, Wes Craven reinvented the slasher subgenre multiple times over – and even now, A Nightmare On Elm Street remains one of his greatest creations. It all hinges on that killer conceit: the murderous, finger-knived Freddy Krueger menaces his teen victims in their dreams,...

The Final Girl trope defined characteristics of the last character left alive to confront the killer in horror films, particularly in slasher films. The rise of feminism in the 1970s became a milestone in the genre as the damsel in distress did not need a man to rescue her anymore. Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) in the Alien franchise and Jess Bradford (Olivia Hussey) from Black Christmas all portrayed strong female characters who all fought back against their assailant.
Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is one of the most famous final girls in the Halloween franchise that was first released in 1978 and deemed Laurie as the victim of her brother Michael Myers. As the final girl characteristics have developed, like the franchise, she no longer waits around for Michael instead is ready to fight him and is no longer a target.

In celebration of A Nightmare on Elm Street’s 4K restoration — available on Digital today and on physical 4K Ultra HD on October 15 — living legend Robert Englund spoke to Bloody Disgusting about 40 years of Freddy Krueger and if he has one more performance left in him.
The actor had a feeling that A Nightmare on Elm Street was special during the production in 1984, but he didn’t know if it would reach an audience. “I just wanted people to see it, because I could tell we were onto something good. My girlfriend back then, who discovered several actors who’ve gone on to great success in Hollywood, she saw Johnny Depp for 20 seconds in the hallway the first week, and she said, ‘He’s going to be a star.'”

Mentions of sexual abuse, physical abuse, torture, and murder.
The franchise of A Nightmare On Elm Street hasnt been active since 2010, but Robert Englund has the best idea to bring Freddy Krueger back and its not a legacy sequel. Wes Craven left an unforgettable and highly influential mark on the horror genre, mostly with his slasher movies, such as A Nightmare On Elm Street. In 1984, Craven introduced the world to Freddy Krueger (Englund), an undead, severely burned child killer with a bladed glove who has a very unique, terrifying, and specific modus operandi.
What Krueger does is haunt his victims in their dreams, where they are most vulnerable, and if he kills them there, they die in real life too. A Nightmare On Elm Street sees Krueger targeting Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) and her friends, as they are the children of the people who burned him alive, and he really wants revenge.

Robert Englund wants to return to the ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ series for an animated movie. The 77-year-old actor starred as the dreaded Freddy Krueger in the horror franchise from the 1984 original until the 2003 spin-off ‘Freddy vs. Jason’, though has now revealed he would happily reprise his role as the terrifying killer in an R-rated animated flick. When ComicBook.com pitched Englund the idea, he said: "Let's go for it. We’ll have lunch! "No, that's a great idea. Well, you know, Freddy’s made appearances in some sophisticated games, but I'm thinking that would be a great idea. A nice, dark, animated ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’."The Hollywood star then suggested a "retro" Freddy Krueger prequel set in the 1970s that would follow the killer before he terrorised young children in their dreams. He said: "I would almost like to see a prequel to ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street...

In the age of social media, it’s easy to imagine what would happen with the teenage targets if the horror movie took a more realistic approach. No doubt one would stop to snap a pic of the killer and turn them into the poop emoji in real time while another would take a selfie right before the killer pops up for that final scare. There, too, would be tweets along the lines of, “1,000,000 likes and i’ll remove this dude’s mask!” But how would the most iconic of slasher favorites fare with so much social media around? For Freddy Krueger, it’s all about the memes.
Sitting down for a joint interview with ComicBook.com, Heather Langenkamp – who played final girl Nancy Thompson in A Nightmare on Elm Street – said Freddy Krueger would lose a lot of his boiler room steam thanks to social media. “I mean, I almost...

Monsters as metaphors are nothing new to the world of fiction, allowing creators to find novel ways to explore the unknown through horror tropes. The genre has seen a surplus of films using this device in the 10 years since Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook was released to critical and commercial success, and we can now add Spider One‘s Little Bites to the list. It’s a well-intentioned film, with the musician-turned-filmmaker delivering a visually striking parental horror film that boasts a strong lead performance, but it suffers from a transparent script and some severe pacing issues.

The TIFF People’s Choice Award is usually a bellwether to the Oscars, but this year the prize reflects rather more deep-seated global concerns among the voters than just the race to Best Picture. Based on the short story of the same name by Stephen King — one of the four in his 2020 novella If It Bleeds — The Life of Chuck is, as might be expected from the Master of the Macabre, a story of human mortality presented as a strange, surrealist comedy. Charlie Kaufman has done this before — twice, in fact, with Synecdoche, New York (2008) and I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020) — but Mike Flanagan’s film will likely go down a little smoother, with a lightness that undercuts the overarching tragedy.
Flanagan introduced the world premiere at Toronto with a quote from King himself: “When an old man dies, a library burns down.” Its relevance is not immediately clear but will become so over time,...

Watching the films of Johnny Depp is a fraught exercise in 2024. Depp has been frequently in trouble with the law throughout his career, having gotten into fights, having threatened paparazzi, and having once trashed a hotel room. A lot of Depp's early temper problems were likely connected to his admitted alcoholism, something he wrestled with for a long span of his life. Depp's highly publicized separation from his wife Amber Heard also caused a media firestorm, leading to mutual accusations of physical abuse, more drug use, and a lot of bad blood. Both Depp and Heard were found guilty of defamation.
Many have come to refuse Depp's movies altogether, hating the abuse he visited upon Heard. Ever since 2018, Depp has appeared in the public eye less and less frequently. His film "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" wasn't a big hit, and his character was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen in the follow-up.
